6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville,J OBITUARY FRANKLIN JOHN GILMER 111 for several years, due to being gassed overseas, and with only one lung, Franklin John Gilmer, aged 81, a highly respected citizen of Newton- ville and area, passed away in Memorial Hospital, Bowman- ville, on Wednesday, December 6th, 1978. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Gilmer, he was born. in Newtonville and educated in Clarke Township. He married Violet M. Rowe, on January l4th, 1922. A resident of Newcastle since 1940, ho had previously resided in Niagara Falls and Queenston. Retired for several years, he was a member of Newton- ville United Church, and of Branch No. 178 Royal Cana- dian Legion. Enlisting at the age of 17 he went overseas with the 75th Battalion, and, was severely gassed at Paschendale. Sent to England for treatment he returned home in 1919. Surviving àre his wif e Violet, sons Laurence R., Tonawanda;' N.Y., Raymond F., Islington; James S., Port Hope; and Philip, Newcastle. He was predeceased by a4 sister Winifred Kimbali. Funeral services were held on Saturday at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home with Reverend A. Tizzard officiat- ing. Paîl-bearers were Messrs. A. Ton. Jack Kimbail, Alf Graham, Jim Adams, Cliff Petlaick and Major Bill Clarke. Interment Newtonville Lakeview Cemetery.
