Last week word was receiv- ed of the passing in Bally- money, Northern Ireland of Mr. Thomas Louden, aged 76 years. Left to mourn are two brothers and two sisters and families. To the many in this district who knew him as Red, we extend sympathy. The Newcastle Lionettes held their regular meeting last Thursday, Jan. 11 at the home of Mrs. Frances Wright. C The ladies are planning a cooking school on Thursday, March 8. Mrs. Jill Christie and her mother, Mrs. Raye Fried- lander, Toronto, spent- the weekend in Newcastle. Mr. Harold Powell and Mr. Art VanDolder, Toronto visit- ed on Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Powell. Mrs. Frances Wright and Mrs. Mary Garrod visited on Friday afternoon with their brother Mr. Charlie Brereton who is a patient in Port Hope and District Hospital. Mrs. Rachel Dennis bas returned home from Memorial Hospital, Bowman- ville. Patients in hospital include Mr. and Mrs. Howard Allin, Mrs. Grace Toms and Mr. Fred Wind. Mr. Harry Wade and Mr. Jack Crago attended the thirty-second Shouldice Hos- pital Patients' Reunion on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Royal York Hotel, Toronto. Sunday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Powell were Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Wright. Sunday even- ing visitors with the Powells were Mrs. Grace Shetler and Wendy, Mrs. Lynda Anderson, Oshawa and Mrs. Cheryl Duval. Mr. Reginald LeGresley and son Farncomb enjoyed the Toronto International Boat Show at the Coliseum on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Johnson spent the weekend in Norwood with Mr. and Mrs. B. Rumbles and granddaughter, Krista. Mrs. Bessie Stephenson entertained the Ladies Euchre Club last week. Mrs. Florence Ferguson, Mrs. Bessie Stephenson, Mrs. May Burley, Mr. Arthur Clarke and Mr. Bill Morley attended the card game in Kendal on Friday night. Sympathy is extended to friends and family of Mrs. Joseph Gaudet who passed away in Bowmanville Memor- ial Hospital on Monday, Jan. 15. Mr. and Mrs. John Scott visited on Friday evening with her aunt, Mrs. Ada Carson and Wilson, Newtonville. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Martin, Janetville visited last week with Mr. and Mrs. Murray Martin and family with Mrs. Margaret Pearce. Mr. John Metrailler, who has worked in Korea for a year, is now employed at a project at James Bay. Recent supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Lancaster were Mr. and Mrs. C.R. Farrow, Newtonville and Mr. and Mrs. Alf. Perrin, Cowan- ville. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Naylor were Sunday supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Miller. The 1st Newcastle Packs held their annual Father and Son Banquet at Newcastle Community Hall on Saturday evening. Anglican Church News Rev. David Spivey and Rev. Allan Haldenby attended the meeting of the Ministerial of Bowmanville and Newcastle at St. John's Church, Bow- manville, last Wednesday at noon. Plans for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity were announced. It will be held on Friday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. at the Maranatha Christ- ian Reformed Church on Highway 2, east of Bowman- ville. Special guest preacher is Dr. Stanford Reid of Guelph University. Rev. A. Haldenby attended the meeting of the Clergy of the Deanery of Durham and Northumberland in St. Mark's Church, Port Hope. Mrs. Nell Yates, Outreach Cordinator for St. George's Church and Rev. Haldenby attended a Conference for Ten Days of World Development at St. John's Convalescent Hos- pital, Willowdale, on Sat., Jan. 13. The subject for this year is Food. Some speakers dealt with the problem in Africa and South Africa. At the 11:15 a.m. service on Sunday at St. George's the choir sang the Anthem, Three Kings from Persian Lands Afar. The Rector based his sermon on the first chapter of Ephesians and the theme, The Hope of His Calling. The Christian Church is to promote hope for people in the world. However, the icy winter day affected the attendance of the congrega- tion. St. George's Church is undergoing repair and interior decoration but Church will be held as usual. United Church News On Sunday, Jan. 14 at Newcastle United Church, Rev. David Spivey, chose as his sermon, Jesus said If you have Faith, Faith sustains, gives courage to persist in adversity, motivates and changes things. The first Scripture, Mark 9 verses 14-29, was read by Mrs. Helen Nesbitt. The Prayer for this week is: Lord, let me so worship and adore and praise you that there is no room in my mind for doubt or fear. The Couples and Families Club have planned a Snow Party for next Sunday. The Annual Meeting will be held after morning service on Sun., Jan. 28, starting with Pot-Luck Lunch. Newcastle United Church Women On Monday evening, Jan. 8, the Evening Unit members, of the UCW met in the Board Room. The worship period was conducted by Mrs. Kath- leen Powell assisted by Mrs. Bessie Dean and Mrs. Hazel Crago, Mrs. Lesle Campbell was pianist for the evening. The devotions centred around thoughts for the New Year. Mrs. Jean Rickard conducted the business period after which Hazel Crago showed slides of Switzerland. Lunch was served by the ladies in charge. Mr. and Mrs. Ron Farrow and girls were Sunday supper guests of his parents Mr. and Mrs. Morris Farrow, New- castle. Mr. and Mrs. Brian Caswell and Jeff visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Walker and girls, Toronto. They also called on Mr. and Mrs. Dave Scott and Mr. Gerald Hallow- ell while in Toronto. Mrs. Llew Hallowell visited Mr. and Mrs. Stan Falls, Toronto on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Allan Brown, Oshawa were Sunday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Trim. Mr. and Mrs. Ewart Robin- son spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Yule, Oshawa. Elizabethville On Tuesday afternoon the United Church Women Unit 11 met at Mr. and Mrs. H. Quantrill's home. About a dozen attended. The president Mrs: M. McAllister presided. Mrs. Ken Trew had the devotional and also had a skit for program. The ladies brought gifts for ababy shower to be sent to the Indian halfway house in Toronto. We had one of the ladies speak to us at our September general meeting last fall. We also sent a donation before Christmas from our U.C.W. t them. The minutes were read by the sec.-trea. Mrs. Quantrill. Holl call was, "visits to the sick". Several items of business were discussed. We agreed to help the W.I. with their quilting of the next quilt and also with the wedding recept- ion. Lunch was served by Mrs. H. White and Mrs. Quantrill. As our assistant speaker didn't turn up we had Rev. W. Kennedy and he would have to be at all three charges. We had plan- ned our Congregational meet- ing after church and Mr. W. Banister acted as chairman when Rev. Kennedy had to leave after the church service. On Thursday the Golden Age Club met at Mr. and Mrs. J. Cantrell's home. Seventeen attended. On Wednesday morning an executive meeting of the United Church Women met at Mr. and Mrs. M. Gardiner's home. Most of the executive attended. The president Mrs. K. Trew presided. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The annual meeting of the Presby- tery will be Feb. 7th at Campbellford. World's Day of Prayer will be at Welcome, March 2. We plan to have only three general meetings - May, Sept. and Dec. in the coming year. Mr. and Mrs. W. Terbenche and family were with Mr. and Mrs. C. Mercer on Saturday. YELVERTON The trip to the southern climes from our community is underway. One couple is currently soaking up the sun (with alternate cold snaps) in Panama City, Floriday. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Stinson accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Jamie Malcolm of Blackstock left this week for a two week sojourn in Hawaii. The Howard Malcolms and the Harvey Malcolms return- ed Saturday a.m. from an enjoyable week at the Grand Bahama Hotel in the Bahamas - the food fantastic and the breezes quite balmy. On Sun. evening the annuall Congregation Meeting of Yelverton United Church was held in church basement following a pot-luck supper. The reports of the various church organizations were given and the Nominating Committee and election of elders and stewards was completed. Mrs. Jean McCabe of Lind- say a former resident of Lotus, is enjoying a week with her daughter and husband - Eleanor and Larry Kent of London, Ont. visiting her new grandson John Edwards. Con- gratulations on the new arrival to parents and grand- parents. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Wilson were overnight guests of Isabel's sister Mr. and Mrs. Norman Neals of Lakefield. TYRONE Tyrone U.C.W. Meeting The January meeting of Tyrone UCW met in the CE wing on January 10th for the first meeting of the New Year. Mrs. Pauline Alldread and Mrs. Lorna Swain opened the meeting with the worship service which contained sev- eral encouraging and in- spirational thoughts for the coming year. President Mrs. Jacqueline Vaneyk conducted the business portion, welcoming ail members and guests. Year-end reports were read by the various officers and committees. Some dates to remember are: The congregational meet- ing after the church service on January 21st with a pot-luck casserole lunch. A catering on January 27th. Friday, March 2nd, World's Day of Prayer at Tyrone at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. It was agreed we would have a Lenton Offering again this year, with the project being the Andulyaun Home for Indian Girls.
