The Canadian Statesman. JRowmanvilIe. January 31, 1979 9 Cul Leblancs Atoms showing Improvementt On Tuesday, Jan. 9 Peter- broughs Atom 2nd team foud an improved Bowman- ville team as the boys held them to 7 goals while scoring one themselves. Junior Pithie from John Edmondson and Mike Colwell. Jan. 13, saw Port Perry defeat the Guy Leblanc Atoms by a score of X-, Markham came to town on Jan. 20 and shut out Bowmanville 11-0 as nobody could get a shot on the Markham net. Jan. 27, Markham returned for their last visit of the season before playoffs and won by a socre of 13-3. The Realtors did play a much better game, Sean Hele with two goals lead the way, John Edmondson one goal and one assist, Junior Pithie one assist. Paul Martin one assist. Scotts 8ColonelsHave Busy Ne Game Week The past 10 days have been very busy for the Colonels as tbey have played 5 games, and had a 6th forfeited as Ajax did not show up for a league game. The first gamne of this period was a very enjoyable one for the Scotts Colonels, as they travelled to Toronto to play an exhibition game against the Hlillcrest Novice team of the M.T.H.L. 'Hillcrest opened quickly with two goals, how- ever our boys did not give up and came back with 3 un- answered goals to win 3-2. Scoring for Scotts Colonels were, Gareth Stone, Tim Smith, and Brad Carnegie. Assists to Shane Armstrong, Brad Carnegie, and Tim Smith. Our boys were very pleased with the free pop and also penants that tey re- ceived from the Hillcrest team. Following the above win, the Colonels although playing hard, have run into a scoring slump, and in an exhibition game against Uxbridge, we came away the losers in a 5-2 contest. Scoring for Bowman- ville were Gareth Stone, from Brad Carnegie and TIm Septolu-Cleon Mine Lou. Two Gomes The Septo Clean Minor Bantams started their play- offs 'vith the first game in Cobourg on Friday, Jan. 25th. Cobourg got the only score of the opening period, that by David Waldie the great Cob- ourg left winger (who was to score ahl 4 Cobourg goals.) In the second, Waldie made it 2 - 0 at 34 seconds, but then the line of Steven Taylor, Shaughn Houston and Grant Gibson went to work for the Toros. In a span of 16 seconds, the Toros had tied the game, both goals by Steven Taylor. Shaughn Houston set up both and Don Daigle earned an assist on the first goal, and Grant Gibson the other assist on the second goal. Before the goals the Toros were playing sloppy hockey but played well after that until the game ended. One mistake in the Toros' end allowed Cobourg to go ahead 3-2 with only 9 seconds left in the period. The third period was the best period, with both teams going end to end and having great scoring chances. Then a very controversial goal occur- red with only 88 seconds left and Toro goalie Billy Mc- Arthur pulled for an extra attacker (Billy played well in the nets for the Toros in this office). The puck went into the Smith, and Tim Smith from Chris Hall, and John Begg. Jan. 24th when it would have been better to be driving motor boats than cars, the team visited the Oshawa Triple A team. Again we were only able to score 2 goals, one by Brad Carnegie, assisted by Tim Smith and Mike Kane. The second by Tim Smith, from Brad Carnegie and Jeff Laird. Jan. 26th was a night best to forget, and the Colonels were defeated 5-0 by Port Perry. Although played good position the team could not get on the track scoring. The last game of this stretch was a night game in Peter- borough, again -against a Triple A team. Scormng again was a problem in this game as the team outplayed Peter- borough, but had it not been for outstanding goal tending by the Peterborough goalie, this could have been a win for the Colonels. The final score waý 3-1 for, Peterborough, our only goal coming late in the game, on a long hard shot by Jeff Laird, with assist to Brad Carnegie. IrBoam t. Cobourg Toros' end just behind the blueline; David Waldie broke through the Toros defence and feli. It appeared as if he pushed the puck in with his hand. The referee was in a terrible position and could hardly see the play. The goal was allowed however. This proved to be a big goal as Ron Hopcroft from Shaughn Houston got the third Toros' goal with 24 seconds 'ieft. Notes - The Toros played well and deserved at least a tie. Steven Taylor and Shaughn Houston both had a great game. Leading the attack whenever they were on the ice and they also did a great deal of backchecking in their own end. Game Two Game 2 was played at Darlington Sports Complex the followinig niglit and what a contrast to the first game of the series. The Toros came out really fiat and as a resuit were in a 7-2 defeat. Actually the score was 7-0 before Ron Hopcroft (a nice goal) from Glen German and Todd Trem- blay got the Toros on the board at 7:12 of the third period. Shaughn Houston un- assisted got the other Toros goal at 10:25. Notes - Cobourg was one hour late because of bus trouble. End Season on Winning Note by Bill Paterson On Jan. 15 the Toros journeyed to Markham and came away 5-1 losers. The first period belonged to the Markham team as they peppered Terry Brady wîth numerous shots, putting 3 behind hlm on passes out from behind the net to an unguard- ed man in front. In the second and third periods Markham put one goal per period on the board. Finally Doug Dilling com- pleted a pass from Todd Hooper to spoil the Markham goaltenders shutout. Jan. 20, 1079 The Cobourg Minor Midgets came to Bowmanvilie for their final game with the Constit- ution Insurance Minor Mid- gets of the current season. The game ended Toros 4, Cobourg 3 in a hard fought contest. The Toros' Dan McMullen scored an unassisted goal at 2:12 of the first period, a resuit of liard work around the net. Cobourg tied it up hlaf way through the period. The second period was il minutes old before Todd Hooper scored assisted by Paul Dadson and Dana Peebles. After the rest between periods Cobourg tied it up at 1: 16 of the third. Ryan Kearney stole a pass from a Cobourg player, steak- ed over the blue line and let a sizzling blast go right into the Iower right corner of the Cobourg net. Todd Hooper put the Toros ahead by two goals at 4:17 when he took a pass from Kent Wilcox and Doug Dilling. Cobourg put in their final goal at 5:44. Craig Germain worked hard in goal and deserved the win as did the rest of the team who took more than their share of g enalties in the third period butkilled them effectively. Jan. 27, the Toros met Whitby M. Midgets in their final season game. The -gamne ended in a 3-ail tie. Whitby put 2 goals on the board in the first period but the second period was Bow- manville's when they scored 3 goals to go ahead in the game - Doug Dilling from Scott Pater- son and Todd Hooper on the power play, followed by Todd Hooper from Paul Dadson and Doug Diiiing and their capt. The Red Eagles' goalie, Stew Roberts, was looking for his third shutout since joining the Marina crew from the Oshawa Junior B's after the season started. Stew is the only league goalie so far to record shutouts in' regular season play. Bob Koczulab, the other half of the Eagle goaltending combînation, will return to the lineup shortly. Ralph Cryderman, making a strong attempt at winning the scoring champîonship, had a four-point night. He ended up with 90 points and an average of just under three points per garne. Mark Jobb of the Port Perry Mojacks is challenging Cryderman for the honor. Jobb has one remaining game in Stoutfville. Whitby tied it up in the third period, a power play goal at 5:03. Terry Brady played a strong game between the pipes to keep the Toros in the game. Now, cornes the playoffs and we look forward to the community fan support as we take on Markham, Thursday in their arena. In Sunday's game against Little Britain, the points were spread around, indicating a good team effort. Kirk Kemp lit the goal twice and had two assists. John Conboy matched that record with two goals and two assists of his own. Dan Strike had one goal and one assist and Tom Dwyer had one goal and three assists. Other points scored by the Eagles were as follows: Don Farrow 1 and 2; Gary Nemisz 2 goals, Brad Godfrey 2 assists, Jerry Leddy 1 andi 1, Wayde Preston 1 and 3 Jerry Johnston 1 goal and Brian Simpson 1 assist. Because of the passing of time, 10 of the Eagles will be playing their last games this year. Lost to the team because of their age are: Bob Kozulab, John Kane, Raîpli Cryder-, man, Kirk Kemp, Gary Nemisz, Gerald Brunt, Nick Van Seggelen, Brian Simpson. Dan Strike and Stew Roberts will be continuing their educa- tion. The playoffs for the Bow- manville Red Eagles will probably get underway on home icé Sunday night. These upcoming games can best be described as a whole new season. If the team has the ambition to go ail the way to the finals they could be involved in another 30 games at least. Eagles must get a maxi- mum input from each player, 623-5520 bearing in mind that every team they play would like nothing better than to knock off the Bowmanville team because of their succes this season and during the past two seasons -- especîally in the central group. To the east, Gananoque, who were handled with ease by Bowmanville last season, have strengthened this year and Allison to the west is having a strong season. Should the Eagles get that far, Allison would like to avenge its loss to Bowmanville in the semi finals of the last two seasons. Last year's series, which went seven games, had ail the qualifications of a final series. At the other side of the province Essex, which has won the Junior C crown three times and has been a runner- up once in the last four years, have moved shop over to Belle River after running into difficulties in Essex. Essex, which was very successful on the ice, drew very few fans to their home games. Everyone knows a, team must have fan support, especially- in playoffs. We hope the area fans who for their own reasons have been missing the Eagles' fine showing this year will make time ta attend the remaining games. hb~O caOp 4 Ladies Monday Night January 22, 1979 Averages Vickie Terry 218, Jean Harness 212, Shiarlene Dehart 209, Onie Etcher 208, Nancy Evans 208, Judy Bragg 208 (6), Shirley Davis 207, Fern Brad- ley 205, Jackie Braybrook 200, Marg King 199, Donna Harness 197, Dot Bridger 197.
