Plants grown by a process which is called photo-synthesis, which is started or triggored by light, so ail plants need some form of light ta survive, some will survive in f ull sun and others do just as well in semi-shade. Light for indoor* plants can be divided inta 4 basic light categories: 1Sunny Areas This area will receÉve at least 5 hours of direct sunlighýt even during the winter months with its shorter hours. A window facing south-east ta south-west will receive that much light in the Durham Region. Since very few plants can withstand the direct sunlight coming through a window; most plants, should be protected with sheers during tho hot hours, between il a.m. and 3 p.m. and this particular- ly true during the winter months when the snow is on the ground and will increase the light intonsity by as much as 30 per cent, and light painted buildings directly opposite the window where your plants are will increase the light intensity. Some of the plants listed below will stand up to the sunny areas: Calidium, Chrysanthemums, Agave, Aloe,ý Bamboo, Fatshedera, Kalanchoe, Azalea 's, Bougainvillea, Flowering Maple, Stephanotis and many more. Semi-suuny Location This category wiII have at least 2 hours of sunlight in the winter months, they will do well in bright light but without direct sunlight, in this type of light many of the green foliage plants will do very weil, which sort of resembles the edgo of the jungle, where many of these plants are faund. Here is a few of the plants that wrnl do well in this type of light: Mrican Violets, Gloxinia, LUp- stick Plant, Orehids, Cyclamen, Calceclaria, Cineraria, Bedgon ia , Columnia, Dracena, Ficus, 1Fittonia and many more especially many of the tropicals and foliage- plants that we have in the home today. Seml-shady Location In this group are the plants that will thrive in bright open light, but require little or no sunlight, most of the plants in this group are mainly grown for their foliage. Here are a few examples: Orchids, African Violets, Asparagus, Bromiliads, Diefenbachia, Norfolk Island Pine, Pathos, Pilea, Prayer Plant and the famous snake plant or mother- in-law tongue, plus many of Shady Location Many of the foliage plants will grow in an area that receive no sunlight, but there should bo enough light ta cast a shadaw when you pass your hand across the area in which the plant will' be placed. Heère are a few that can tolerate this condition: Asparagus, ,Aspidistra, Chinese Evergreen, Dracena, Ferns, Ficus, Ivys (English), Palms, Philodendron, Pathos and Podocarpus. Today there are a multitude of different light bulbs on the market ta help'- you grow almost anything indoars, this makes it po)ssible ta graw your favorite plant even in the darkest corner, and this can change a dark corner into a spot of beauty. I have found over the years, that the most bxpensive lightbulb, is the cheapest in the long run, 50 when planning ta brighten up that corner, get the best bulb on the market. Until next week, happy indoor gardoning. Letter t10 Ed-itor Dear Mr. James: 1978 has passetl by very quickly and 1 must apologize for being remiss in not sending this letter out ta you sooner.
