In a letter to the North- umberland and Newcastle Board of Education, vice- president Bonnie McBride stated, "the United Nations' Declaration of the Rights of the Child bas become the philosophical basis, for the activities andevents we are planning. The rights, needs and interests of our own local children will be our main focus." Plans to date include news- paper articles and radio spots, blood donor clinics sponsored by Northumberland and New- castle teachers in each area, displays in mails, libraries etc., a teacher resource book- let containing *works of the Northumberland and New- castle children, a ist of suggested activities to cele- brate the Year of the Child sent to ail scbools and commu- nity organizations and a Year of the Child festival on October 2or 21. -on March 13, Dr. Marcel Kinsbourne will speak about "The Hyperactive Child" at Bowmanville High School. Approve Pay Hikes for Doctors D)octors on staff of homes for the aged operated by Durham Region will receive an increase in pay retroactive to October 5, 1978. Regional Couneil voted Wednesday to increase the tees of medical directors of al tegional Homes for the Aged to $2.75 per bed er month for administrative dtes. 1The doctors have been without a raise in salary for 12 years. in a report to council, Commissioner of Social Services, W.D. Johns, expiain- ed that the current ad- ministrative fee for medical directors is $130 per bed per month. Subsidy for the new rate would be provided by the province at a rate of not iess than 70 per cent of the deficit costs. Medical directors in Homes for the Aged are mainly responsible for overseeing the medical and paramedical care of ail residents wbether they have a private attending physician or not. INo0Decision On Dropping Planning Post Af ter meeting behind ciosed doors for 90 minutes last Wednesday morning, regional council apparently reached no decision on a recent proposai to eliminate the post of planning commissioner, now beld by William McAdamS . in open council that after- noon, a motion was passed to discuss the matter further in two week's time with the commissioner or is repre- sentative present. The proposai, contained in a report by Chief Administra- tive Officer, Robert Richard- son and presented to a joint closed meeting of planning and management committees, was ieaked to the press and appeared in print Friday, January 19. The report recommended moving the land division committee to the regional clerk's office and leaving the planning staff of 50 under the administration of planning director Mofeed Michael. 1956.
