Offers New Contract for Its Teachers At the request of the bargaining committee for The Durham Elementary School Teachers, the Board of Educa- tion bas made an offer of settiement on a one-year contract. The offer has the unanimous support of al trustees eligible to vote on Public School matters. The teachers have been without a contract since *August 31, 1978. The Board's offer consists of a salary increase of 5.5 per cent on the Salary Grid for the * eid September-December anda 5.6 per cent for the period January-June. Proportionate adjustments in principals' scale and some mncrease in allowances for vice-principals and consul- tants, who are p aid on the grid, are par t o f th e salary package. Maximum salary rates for 'teachers under, the latest proposai, would range from $10,512 to $28,332. Principals would be paid a minimum of $29,050 and a maximum of $33,550 by June 30, 1979. The total cost to the Board of the proposed increases would be $1,914,000 or 7.35 per cent. The Board bas offered to include seniority guarantees in the contract and severance allowances for those teachers declared redundant, and is proposing the present contract language which grandfathers ail teachers on staff as of September, 1977. The Board is proposing the present contract of 25:1 for Pupil-Teacher Ratio. The 1977-78 operating staffing ratio is 23.85:1 includîng a mini- muùi of 3.5 special education teachers per thousand pupils. The Board believes that this staffing practice and policy is entirely consistent with the teachers' goal for quality education. The Chaîrman of the Trust- ees bargaining committee, Trustee D.J. Sîms of Whitby, notes, "In ail respects, we feel that this is a good, basis for settiement. We can only hope that the teachers' member- ship agrees and so directs its bargaining committee." BEAT by DM. Dineen, book. As the Spanish Civil war was ending in 1939, Steinbeck again made the bestseller list with The Grapes of Wrath. In 1940, as England was attacked from the air, people in Canada read How Green was my Valley and Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tols. These classics may provide memories for some readers, for others insight into a bygone era. Try an "oldie but goodie" for something new today. 1!
