W..: Capture Leaque Titie Win and Loge in Tourney The Howard Wood Trans- port Minor PeeWee Toros completed a busy weekend of hockey action, playing two tournament games and an O.M.H.A. Lakeshore League game. On Saturday morning, the Toros played their first game in the Pickering Invitational Tournament, blasting Wheat- field, New York, 6 - 0. Chris Dreossi put the "Transport- ers" on the scoreboard when he notched a goal, with the assists going to Brent Neill and defenceman Brian Heard. Tom McLaughlin scored the second goal, this one coming at the 6:52 mark of the middle period. Assists went to defenceman Pierre St. Amand and Dreossi. Jon Cieff scored a goal, assisted by Jeff Dawson. Jeff Dawson scored Bowmanville's fourth tally at the 4:36 mark of the final stanza. Assists went to his centreman Greg Watson and St. Amand. Brent Neill scored, assisted by McLaughlin and Dawson. The final goal of the contest was picked up by Watson, assisted by Heard and Neill. Brian Heard was chosen the Most Valuable Player for Bowmanville, and was awarded a medal. Tie With Ajax 6 - 6 on Saturday night, the Howard Wood Transport PeeWees travelled to Ajax to play their final League game of the season. The gamne ended in a 6 - 6 deadlock. Bowman- ville struck for the game's first goal, Brian Heard scor- ing, assisted by Tom McLaughlin and Pierre St. Amand. Ajax tied the -score, and scored again to take a 2 - 1 lead. The Toros' Chris Dreossi scored unassisted to send the teamis into the second period all tied up. Brent Neill again put the Toros ahead when he scored, assisted by Dreossi. Ajax scored to tie the, score. Brent Neill scored again to put Bowmanville ahead 4 - 3. Ajax opened the final period, scoring two goals to go into the lead. Brent Neill scored his third of the contest, assisted by linemates Dreossi, who had a superb game, and Tom McLaughlin. Jon Clieff scored a goal to put Bowmanville ahead 6 - 5. Assists on the play went to Lorne Whitmarsh and St. Amand. With 3:02 remaining in the game and the Toros a man short, Ajax scored to tie the score. Alan Ulrich made some super saves to earn the tie with Ajax pressing late in the game. The Minor Pee Wees finished the regular season play with 10 victories,, one loss and one tie, with Ajax having the same record. The Toros were awarded first place on the strength of their victory over Ajax 3 - 2 earlier in the season. .The Howard Wood Trans- port Pee Wees will play off with Markham for the Zone Championship, with the dates to be announced later. Lose Out to Kingston on Sunday morning, the Minor Pee Wees travelled to Don Beer Arena to resume action in the Pickering tourna- ment. Bowmanville was set to play Kingston Township and lost 4 - 1 in a very hard-fought contest. Kingston opened the scoring at the 8:45 mark of the opening period. There was no scoring until the 9:09 mark of the final stanza when Brad Cruess scored the tying goal for Bowmanville. He was assisted on the play by Chris Lee and defenceman Glen Duncan. Kingston scored on a sereen shot fromn the point for the game winner. Kingston scored two more goals late in the period, one of them into the empty net for their margin of victory. Lorne Whitmarsh was picked as the MVP for Bowmanville. Chris Clifton was in goal for Bowmanville in both games played in this tournament and played very well,. The Toros were without the services of defenceman Scott' Barclay, during the whole weekend's action and his services were badly missed. Next weekend the Minor Pee Wees travel to Blenheim to take part in that centre's tournament. Bowmanville is scheduled to play Niagara Falls on Saturday morning. Frank's Po. Wes Dofoat Cobourg ln Playoff Openor Walter Frank's Pee Wees opened their playoffs with Cobourg on Sat., Jan. 27th with a 6 to 4 victory. The Toros found that the boys from Cobourg were a vastly improved team from their regular scheduled games, as the Toros had to come fromn behind to win. The Toros took a two goal lead in the second period. At the 1.03 mark, Roger Hornsby scored on a slap shot from the point while Gord Rogers and Jay Sweet picked up assists. At the 3.19 mark Danny Weir scored from Ray Cummings and Chris Michelson. Cobourg made the score 2 to 1 when Doug Smith scored. At the 28 second mark of the third period, Andrew Hicker- son scored and then at the 49 second mark Cobourg went ahead when Daniel Parker scored. The Toros tied the count at the 1.27 mark when Chris Michelson scored from Ray Cummings. The Toros went ahead 5 to 4 when Danny Weir scored his second goal of the night with Doug Roy and Roger Hornsby assisting. At the 11.44 mark of the thîrd period, Danny Weir scored this third goal of the game with Ray Cummings and Scott Heard drawing assists. The Bulîs scored the sixth goal of the 12.55 mark when Scott Heard scored with Chris Michelson and Chuck Nash drawing assists. Cobourg made it 6 to 4 at the 13.23 mark when Bill MacDonald scored. The Toros were very for- tunate to receive excellent goaltending from George Kennett as he held them ini the game time and time again, as the defence and forwards left him alone many times. It should be mentioned that Ray Cummings played a very strong game as well. The Toros travel to Cobourg on Fr, Feb. 2nd for the second game of the series and if a third game is necessary it will be played in the Darlington Sports Centre on Saturday, February 3rd at 6: 00p.m. DR Spon's iMvinoàr Atoms Wn Twice On Jan. 19, 1979, the Toros travelled to Oshawa to play an exhibition game with the LNHL Red Wings. The Toros won this game 3-0 but the Red Wîngs played a strong game. Scoring for the Toros were Chris Beck, Cory Sweet and Brian Noble. Gaining assists were Kelly Armstrong (2) and Chris Beck. The line of Brian Noble, Kelly Armstrong and Chris Beck played a strong game for the Toros. David Smith earned the shut-out for the Toros making many fine stops. On Sunday, Jan. 21, 197 the Toros went to Ajax to win 6-3. The Ajax team surprised the Toros as they are a much im- proved team over the last time they played us. The defense of On Monday, Jan. 8 Flymng Dutchman Motor Inn Major Bantams played host to Whitby in a regular scheduled league game. Whitby's Jeff Donaldson scored the only goal of the first period. In the second at the 6:08 mark, Brian Ruddy scored to tie the game at 1-1 with assists going to Barry Cullen and Bill Hogarth. Less than a minute later Paul Shaubel on Whitby scored to take the lead and end the scoring in the second period. Both teams played penalty free, good two way hockey as had been displayed through- out the first two periods. With just over a minute remaining Brian Ruddy drilled home a Barry Cullen' pass wîth this combînation picking up their second goal and assist respectively, also assisted by Rick Erwin. This ended the scormng and the game at a 2-2 tie. On Sat., Jan. 13 Young Canada Day the Flying Dutch- man Motor Inn Major Ban- tams defeated Trenton 6-2 at the Bowmanville Arena. Bill Hogarth opened the scoring for the Toros after only 35 seconds of play, with assists to Mike Stocker and Darcy Cummings. Three minutes later Scott Hillier scored with assists to Steve Cary and Rick Erwin. Kaine of Trenton scored at the 8 minute mark to narrow the score to 2-1. But the Flying Dutchman scored two quick goals in the final minute. First with Scott Hilier notching his second, Steve Cary assisting, then captain Ed Osborne unassist- ed with a solo end to end rush. The second period was scoreless for both teams with good chances being missed at each end. Brian Ruddy opened the scormng in the third period for the Flying Dutchman with assists to Chris Dyck and John Klompmaker at the 2 minute mark. Gourlie of Trenton narrowed the score to 5-2 with his unassisted goal at the 7 minute mark. But Brian Ruddy, with his-second of the game, closed the scoring in the final minute with assists again to Klompmaker and Dyck.
