The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 7, 1979 9 Tho Finer S$ide of Hockey Brantford Major Pee Wee Team January 29, 1979 Corporation of the Town of Newcastle Department of Parks and Recreation 40 Temperance Street Bowmanville, Ontario Attention: Mr. G.A. (Joe) Kennett, Program Director Dear Joe: I want to once again thank you on behaîf of the Brantford Turkstra Lumber Major Pee Wee Hlockey' Team for the wonderful week-end provided for our boys. It was indeed a privilege and an honour to have been invited to Bowmanville to play hockey against p ur team. It was a most unexpect ed pleasure to have your Mayor, His Worship G.B. Rickard, present for the dropping of the puck at centre ice. Needlée to say that ahl the parents and the players were very pleased that a man of his responsibility would corne to such an occasion. I'm sure that the boys will remember it the rest of their lives. We have always had a warm spot in our hearts for the boys from Bowmanville when they corne to the Brantford tournarnent, and I know in the future that the friendship between the boys will only grow. If you will recaîl at the end of the second garne on Sunday morning when the final buzzer blew, the boys met each other at centre ice, there was not just the traditional hand shake, they were putting their arms around each other and patting each other on the back. You know and I know Joe, that this is what the game is ail about, and if we can stimulate a relationship between boys at this age hevel then I feel that the coaches and the managers and the time spent is ail worth while. I know that it, brought a lump to my throat when I saw this hap- pen, and I know that it brought a lot of warm feelings from both teams and parents. The banquet was excellent and most unexpected, and the parents that were unable to travel with us to Bowmanville sure missed a fun evening. Once again, please accept our heart felt thanks and we will be Iooking forward to seeing you at Christmas of 1979. Yours truly, K.L. Reese Sunday commercial Hoc-key In the opening games of the Semi finals Jan. 28th, every- one attending saw two really big upsets that being Spen- cer's trouncing Firth's by a score of 5-3, then in the second game saw Cowan's upset Frank's by a whopping 6-3 victory. I think along with everyone else, these two games were the best of the year. Now, for the resuits of the second games of- the semi finals. 1*t game Frank's vs Cowan's - in this game Cowan's only played hockey two periods, then in the third period Frank's exploded with six goals to beat Cowan's 6-1. Sturrock looked super in this game, but in the first game of the semi finals, we won't elaborate on that one. The scoring for Frank's was handled by Hogarth, Simpson, Russell, R. Prentice, Harness and Ray Randell, each with one. Ray Randeli popped in the opening goal at the 1: 05 mark in the third period with a blistering slap shot from the point. The assist went to B. Prentice, Knox and Woolner with two each, singles went to Simpson, R. Prentice and Jim Brooks. Cowan's 'just couldn't put the puck in the net, so as a result they wound up with only one goal, that being by Tom Nowlan, with the assist going to Bruce Osborne. "Not a very good game Cowan' s". Second Game All you can say is "Wow'~ what a hockey game., Both teams in this game deserved to win, it xvas just one of those games you won'tL forget about for a long timne. There W-as not one player on either team who didn't deserve a star if there were stars of the game. Both teams checked hard, passed well and scored really good goals, also there was excellent goaltending at both ends of the ice. The big hero for the victors Spencer's was none other than Grant Luxton with the hat trick, the last goal for Grant also being the winning goal in the third period at the 18 minute mark. Ron Hooper should have had this one when he rattled a back hander off the goal post, but Luxton came from nowhere to tuck it in the shortside behind Mike Wil- lougby. The other scorers for Spencer's were Bob Howes Annandale Rink Wins Hooper's Jewellers Trophy Last Wednesday at Bowmanville Country Club, a rink from Annandale Country Club was the overali winner of the ladies invitational bonspiel and the llooper's Jewellers trophy. They are, from left to right, Mary Kendrick, lead; Anne Lowthian, second; Lil Hooper who presenteci the trophy; Sue Ramsay, skip; Sandra Rudkin, vice. It was an excellent spiel with rinks from a considerable distance taking part. and Gordie Bowan with one each, making it a 5-4 win for Spencer's who now lead the semi-final series by 2 games. All Spencer's need is one more win to advance to the finals. As for the losers Firth's, don't count them out of it just yet, because they have one heck of a team too. There big scorers were J. Baker, M. Cornell, Ken Vîvian and Jim Burtch each with one, with assists going to Jim Baker with two, singles to Joe Humenik, Gary Wilson and Jim Burtch. Good Luck!. Can't ask for a better game Spencer's and Firth's. Receatiffon MHockey MIDGET January 2th, 1979 Gill's Texaco - 7 - Robert Thompson 2, Mike Dentro- mont 2, John Obst, Dana Severn, Steve Daize.
