6 The Canadian Statesmian, Bowmanvile, February 7, 1979 Section Two- Letter to Editor Hillsdale Manor, Oshawa, Ontario Jan. 3lst, 1979. Mr. A. M. Tbompson, Chairman, Northumberland Newcastle Board of Educatian, 17 Concession St. W., Bowmanvile, Ont. Dear Mr. Thompson: Will you please convey ta the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education this message frorn me? For the rnany years (1944-1969) that I was on the staff of Bowmanville High School I always looked upon the men and women who governed the affairs of that school with veneration and respect. I can recaîl clearly such members as Walter Reynolds, Claire Allin, Forbes, Heyland, Bruce Tink, Mrs. Wmn. Clarke, and others ail of whom contributed much of their time, talents, experienice, wisdom, etc. ta correctly and, efficiently and properly guide ail matters that concerned the welfare of the students and the staff of Bowmanvile High School. 0f course, they did s0 at first as the original Bowmanville Board of Education which was the one in charge of the affairs of Bowmanvile High School in 1944 when I first became a member of the teaching staff of B.H.S. As you are well aware, over the years since then, the namne of the Board bas been changed several times as its area of 'urisdiction was changed, and also in. accordance with these changes, the compvosition of the members of this board has changed. As I observed these changes, however, -I firmly believe that there bas been no deterioration in the quality of its members \and in their observance of their prime duty ta guide the affairs of every school in their area in order to show the proper way of conduct in this so-called modern saciety of ours so that they becarne the perfect example, notonly for ail the teachers and students af these many schools, but also for the residents of the Northurnber- land and Newcastle area. Now, having completed this preamble, I corne to the point of this letter ta you. In a recent issue of The Canadian Statesman, Bo*- manville, I was bath surprised and shacked ta read an article, entitled "Douse Smoking Rule". I arn referring ta the motion made by Dr. Ian Wilson ta ban smoking in public meetings of the Northumberland Newcastle Board of Education for a trial peniod of one year. As a frmer honour student of Biology,,, Chemistry and Medical Science at Queen 's University and at University of Toronto, I strongly support Dr. Wilson in is reasons for this motion. After suffering a major strake on Dec. 20, 1977 with the consequent paralysis of one side of my body, necessitating my confinement ta a wheel chair for ail my waking hours. After a lengthy period of hospitalization, I arn now residing at Hillsdale Manor in Oshawa. I have done a considerable amount of writ- ing of articles for magazines etc. Very recently I wrote an article about Smoking (copies of which I arn enclosing.) Originally I had about thirty copies mimeographed, but so many of the residents here, and nurses too, requested copies that my supply of them was soon exhausted. A friend, however, supplied some more copies ta hand out ta those who requested them. As a former bead of the Science and Agriculture Departrnent, and as a former Vice-Principal of Bowman- ville High School, and also as a Board member, introd-u-e this motion, or one very similar ta it, at the next meeting of the School Board, and in closing 1 trust tha t if and when such a motion is again presented to them, they will see fit ta give their approval by passing it with no small majority but with a large imajority! We ail make mistakes. But we should rectify them when- ever we can. In spite of what I have stated above I still believe in the întegrity and good intentions of the Northumnberland and New- castle Board of Education ta do what is right in guiding al the people (children. and adults) of their cornrunity.
