OLD-TIMERS - are very active this year in Bowmanville's hockey scene. King Garden Restaurant in Bowmanville has agreed to sponsor the town's old-timers team and the players have a very busy schedule coming up. On Thursday, February 8, the King Garden Bowmanville Old Timers will play the Bethany Outlaws in Bowman- ville at 10 p.m. On Sunday, February llth they will face off against Newcastle in the Newcastle Village arena at two p.m. The team also plans to play in a tournament to be held March 31 in Orono. There are 18 players on the team, ail of them over 35 years of age. OWEN SOUND - hockey players of Goodyear are practising diligently for their up-coming annual game against the Bowmanville team. Owen Sound won last year's game 9-8, for the second year, and are issuing a "Beware Bow- manville" challenge. A former Bowmanviile res- ident Archie Crossey is a member of the Owen Sound team. NO COMPETITION - While we were getting a couple of pictures at Newcastle Village's Town League hockey dance last week, one of the local gentry happened to mention the several encounters on the, ice they have had over the past five years or so with Bowmanville players in the Sunday mor- ning Commercial League. According to him, Bowmanville has only been able to tie one game s0 far, a rather sad performance. He suggested we might rub it in a little and say they are thinking of seeking stronger opposition this yea7r from Lindsay or somewhere else. "That'll rile Osborne," he chuckled. HATS OFF TO THEM - We've spent most of the weekend dashing back and forth to Bowmanville and Darlington Arenas and earlier to Newcastle where tournaments and playoffs were the order of the day. Also reports will be drifting i al week of teams involved in tournaments ail over the place. Our hats are off to the coaches, man- agers and others involved in these projects who are taking time and effort to look after the young- sters who are playing. It's a labor of love and they don't get as much credit as they should. Their reward cornes from, seeing the lads im- proving every game and giving it everything they have. And they bieed just as much as the kids when they lose out in a close game. A word must also be said for the parents and especially the Hockey Mothers who raise funds and back their ki ds to the bult. We neglected to mention the Hockey Mothers provided free pop for al players on Young Canada Day and pucks as well. Nice going. SNOWARAMA - a fund raising event sponsored by the Ontario Society for Crippled Children and in co-operation with snowmobiler's and Easter Seal Service Clubs throughout Ontario, takes place this Sunday at Port Perry. Capt. Brad Carnegie of Scott's Colonels and Capt. Jaan Luik of Brooklin-Whitby OPSEV Warriors are the players. Scott's Colonels won the game in over- time, but were defeated in the second round, with the Warriors going on to win the Consolation champion- ship. Kings ton Wins Novice Championship Trophy J[~-~'"i 99-DEAN Ii~4~IAV E. OSHAWA Chargex On Saturday, Feb. 3, 1979 the Scott's Colonels Novice Toros of the B.M.H.A. were the hosts of a very successful Novice tournament. Besides our own team, entries came from Whitby, Ajax, Oshawa, Uxbridge, Cobourg, and as far away as Kingston Township and Elmira. 1The overall Championship and the Canadian Tire Trophy was won by the Kingston Township team and they are to be congratulated for their determination and fine play. In winning this championship, they defeated Elmira 5-3, Uxbridge 4-3, and in the final game 11-1 over a very tied, and short staffed Oshawa Black Hawks of the L.N.H.L. The Consolation winners of the Canadian Statesman trophy were the Whitby team. This team was involved in several close games and went into overtime twice. Whitby's first games was a loss to Bowmanville, which put themh into the Colsolation division, and from here they went on to defeat Ajax 3-2 and in the final game, 2-1 over a very fine Elmira team. The Elmira team at times out played Whitby, but could not make it count on the scoreboard. The other teams taking part, Ajax and Cobourg both lost out in the Colsolation elimination round. Bowman- ville and Uxbridge both bowed out in the elimination round of the A division. Our own Scott's Colonels started well in this tourna- ment. by defeating Whitby in the lst game of the day. At the end of one period of overtime the score was stili tied at 3-3. Bowmanviile were credited with the win as we had scored the lst goal of the game. Some very strong defence was played by the Colonels in this game, as in the last period, penalties hit our team, and for WRONG- FELLOW - Humblest apologies, to Billy Hogarth of the Flying Dutchman Motor Inn bautains hockey team who was listed under three action pictures last week as Billy McArthur. Billy Hogarth scored Bowmanville's only goal in a play-off game which Markham won 3-1. It is the officiai opening of te Bowl for Millions Week to raise funds for the Big Brothers, movement. Piedge sheets are available for anyone who would like to take part. Just line Up a few spon-, sors and drop down to Liberty Bowl., DOWNHILL - Cross Country Skiing. Downhills are for enjoyment in cross country skiing. They are the reward for uphill climbing. They should offer you a brief moment of semi-relaxation as you glide downwards, feeling the fresh air on your face. Always bend slightly at the knees when skiing downhill. It gives you an opportunity to react to slight changes in the snow surface. Standing straight will only increase the chances of a faîl. Maintain your centre of gravity by posi- tioning yourself at a right angle to the siope. In other words, lean forward sufficiently into the hill. AIlow your arms to hank in a state of semi- readiness by your sides. Place your skis 15 to 30 centimetres apart to assist with balance. That average stance, will enable you to stop or turn quite easily. Practice downhill skiing by starting on very graduai siopes. Get the feeling of relax- ing while coasting. 6 minutes of the final period we played short handed and for 2 minutes we played two men short. However, we were stili able to hold the Whitby team from scoring. Scoring for Bowmanville were Gareth Stone with 2, Jeff Laird and assists to Eric Janssens, Tim Smith, Brad Carnegie and Gareth Stone. The above win placed our team into the A. division and, the opportunity to go on the Championship. However, this was cut short by the very determined, Black Hawks from Oshawa. The loss of a couple of hours sleep appear- ed to be showing on our boys, and most appeared very tired and sluggish, however there was neyer any question of giving up, and everyone put what ever he had left into the vr92 ~Q~sr~ In the Novice tournament championship game for the Canadian Tire trophY, Kingston Township Novice Kinsmen met Oshawa Canadian Tire Blackhawks on Saturday and defeated them by a wide margin. Bowmanville's new Canadian Tire dealer Peter Ansley was present to present the Canadian Tire trophy to Capt. Michael Gignac. Brooklin- Whitby Warriors Win Consolation The Consolation championship in the Novice tournam-ent here on Saturday was won by the Brooklin-Whitby OPSEV Warriors who defeated the Woolwich (Elmira) Novice Reps to win The Canadian Statesman trophy.
