Eagle Shooters Rack Up Scoring Points Little Britain's goalies had plenty of work during the three games played against the Port Darlington Marina Hotel Red Eagles in Junior C playoffs and local shooters must have improved their goal totals considerably. On Sunday night the Eagles counted 16 times this being one of those occasions, with two Eagles raising their sticks high. In the foreground is Gerald Brunt (9). Van Dyks Eliminate Markham In Two Straight Games and Win Opening Game in Trenton Serie by Don Welsh On Wednesday, Feb. 7 the Van Dyk Major Midgets played host to Markham in the first game of their best of three series to determine the Lakeshore League 'A' champ- ionship. The winners of the, serieg 'W zved into the Playdown against Trenton. This proved to be without a doubt the best hockey game this reporter has seen the Van Dyk crew put together this season. Every player was at his personal best for this important contest. The paceof the game was tremendous. Both teams exhibited a great deal of spark which was evident not only in the hustle and passing of the players but also in the solid bone jarring checks that were issued by Soth squads. The Van Dyk players car- ried the play to Markham throughout the first period but were able to only tally one marker late in the period when they finally got a player uncovered in front of the net. At 13:52 of the second period the Realtors still had the pressure on and kept Mark- ham running around in their own end until they were able to beat the netminder and go ahead 2 to 0. A minute and a half later Markham capital- ized on a scramble in front of the Van Dyk net and eut Bowmanville's lead to 2 to 1. At 7:46 Markham made the best of a power play to score their second goal and tie the game at two apiece. There was no further scoring in this period even though the momentum had turned in Markhari's favor. The third period started where the second had left off with the visitors carrying the play to the Van Dyk boys. At 13:22 it paid off when Mark- ham caught the local lads with only one defenceman back and the forwards not in any hurry to get into the play. The visitors had ample time to set up the goal that moved them into a 3 to 2 lead. At 9:32 Bowmanville moved in off the face off in the Markham end to earn the equalizer. Although both teams had good opport- unities, neither was able to score another goal and the end of regulation time found the teams in a 3 to 3 deadlock. Both teams started into the overtime period with the same hustling, hard checking style of play that had characterized the first half of the game. As it had in the first period this style of play gave Bowman- ville the edge. It seemed that the harder Markham bit them the better the Realtors played. With only 4:21 left in the overtime period and while playing shorthanded, the de- termined Van Dyk players bulled their way into the Markham zone to score the go ahead goal. Two minutes later the Realtors picked up the insurance marker to give them a well deserved 5 to 3 victory over the strong Mark- ham team. For the second game in a row goaltending was a key factor in the contest. Both netminders made some daz- zling plays with Van Dyk goalie Mark Doyle turning back several opportunties for what should have been certain goals for Markham. On Thursday, Feb. 8 the Van Dyk team travelled to Mark- ham for their second game in as many days. In this game both teams appeared to be suffering from their efforts of the previous evening. The fast skating and hard checking of Wednesday's game had taken their toll so the pace of this encounter was much slower. At 7:56 of the first period, Markham took the lead when the Realtors got sloppy in their own zone and failed to clear the puck from in front of their own net. A minute and a half later the Van Dyk crew tied up the score when they put together a fine give and go pass play. The initial frame ended with the two teams tied at one apiece. Peter Ansley, dealer of the Canadian Tire Store in Bowman- ville is pleased to announce the appointment of Rob Switzer as store manager. Mr. Switzer has extensive experi- ence with a Canadian Tire As- sociate Store in London, Ontario and is strongly oriented towards customer service and satisfaction. Markham again took the lead at 10:13 of the second frame when they took advant- age of a power pass play that left the Bowmanville defend- ers in the dust. At 8:41 the Van Dyk players again tied the score when the Realtors centre's face off shot 'was tucked in by the alert winger. Two minutes later a high long shot from the blue line was gloved by the Markham goalie but it trickled out of his grasp and rolled in to give the Van Dyk boys the lead for the first time in the game. This soft goal seemed to break the spirit of the Mark- ham team. Bowmanville scored once more in the middle frame to end the period at Bowmanville 4, Markham 2. The third period was completely Bowmanville's as they scored four more unan- swered goals before the final buzzer. Final score Bowman- ville 8, Markham 2. On Sunday, Feb.ilthe Van Dyk Major Midgets travelled to Trenton for the first game of their best of 5 series. The Trenton boys are a frustrated group who have been beaten by large scores consistently by the "AAA" clubs in their league. Over time this frustration has led to a style of play that can best be described as crude. Their idea of stickhandling is comprised of slashing, jabbing and hack- ing. Finishing off a play is done with elbowing or rough- ing. It is too bad that the team plays this way as there are several players on the squad who exhibit some fine hockey ability but won't get the opportunity to develop it with a team that uses such a crude style. Not having encountered very many teams of this ilk the Van Dyk crew tried to prove they could hand it out as well as their opponents and took more penalties in this game than they have in any two recent contests. The officials were excellent and quickly established the fact that they would tolerate no nonsense. They missed a few misdemeanors but caught. most of the infractions. In all they handed out 34 minutes in penalties to Trenton and 28 minutes to Bowmanville. The Realtors scored the only two goals of the first period both on power plays. There were 12 penalties called with 7 going to Trenton. In the middle frame Van Dyk's outscored their oppon- ents by a margin of 3 to 1. One Bowmanville goal was scored on a power play as was the lone Trenton marker. In this period there were 11 infract- ions of the rules with 6 of them called against the Realtors. The pace slowed down in the third period and it was evident that both clubs had been told to clean up their act. The only goal of the last frame was scored by the Toros. Final score Bowmanville 6, Trenton 1. D & R Sports Minor Atom On Jan. 27th the Peter- borough AAA came to Bow- manville to play a 2-2 tie with the D & R Toros. This was a fast exciting game with the Petes evening the score with one minute remaining in the game. The first period remained scoreless and the second was almost completed when the Peterborough team scored their first goal. In the third period the Toros scored two quick goals to go in front. Scoring for the Toros were Chris Beck and Shawn Rekker. Gaining assists were Kelly Armstrong, Shawn Rek- ker, Larry Perris and Chris Beck. The line of Cory Sweet, Kelly Armstrong and Chris Beck were very strong in this game having almost all the shots on net. David Smith was exceptional in net making many fantastic stops. On Sunday, Jan. 28th the Toros travelled to Thornhill to play, defeating their Atoms 6-1. This game proved to be the Toros all the way outshoot- ing the opposition 24 to 11. Scoring for the Toros were David Fairey (2), Larry Perris, Cory Sweet, Brian Noble and Chris Beck. Gain- ing assists were Shawn Rek- ker (3), Brian Noble (2), Michael Houston, Kelly Arm- strong, Chris Beck, Glen Campbell and David Fairey. The forward line of Brian Noble, Glen Campbell, and David Fairey played well in this game. On Feb. 4th the Toros travelled to Whitby to play their second game of the day defeating the Whitby team 6-0. We really walked all over Whitby in this game and they never seemed to be able to get started. Our defence of Michael Houston, Bobby Mc- Arthur, Shawn Rekker, and Barry Oliver played a strong hard hitting game on our blue line. Earning the shutout in net was David Smith who is playing fantastie goal lately. Scoring goals for the Toros were Larry Perris, Chris Beck (2), Cory Sweet (2), and Brian Noble. Gaining assists were Michael Houston (2), Chris Beck, Larry Perris, Barry Oliver and Mike Gallant. The line of Larry Perris, Mike Gallant and Paul Stainton played well in this game - keep up the good work Toros!! Blank Cobourg 8-0 On Feb. 6th the Toros travelled to Cobourg to hand them a 8-0 defeat. The team came out flying and never stopped until the final whistle. Sharing the shutout was David Smith and Scott Veales who had come up from the second team to give David a hand in goal. Scott was a pretty happy boy as this was his first win and his first shutout ever. Scoring for the Toros were Larry Perris (2), Michael Houston, Mike Gallant, Cory Sweet, Chris Beck, Kelly Armstrong and David Fairey. Gaining assists were Barry Oliver (4), Brian Noble, Larry Perris, Chris Beck, Paul Stainton and Glen Campbell. Keep Ajax Scoreless On Feb. 10th the Toros played host to the Ajax tearn defeating them 7-0. David Smith handled this shut out himself in goal. Scoring goals for the Rekker, Paul Stainton, Brian Noble, Mike Gallant, Cory Sweet and Kelly Armstrong. Gaining assists were Michael Houston (2), Glen Campbell (2), Larry Perris (2), Kelly Armstrong (2), Bobby Mc- Arthur, Barry Oliver, Cory Sweet, Brian Noble and Mike Gallant. A special comment must go to the referees in this game handing out 13 assists on the goals. The boys are passing the puck around well and it is nice to see the referees handing out assists on goals because it sure encourages the boys to pass and not hog the puck. Quite often the boy doing the work does not get the credit - good work refs - Paul Cooke, and Brian Lipop. The other victory was against Whitby 6-0 which was our second game of the day so they played well - this has been previously recorded. Mark Hickey Hit 50-Goas McGregor's Beat Cobourg On February 10th, Cobourg outweighed McGregor's Hardware Toros, but Bow- manville outplayed Cobourg to the tune of 3-1. Mark Hiekey was held to an assist this game but got his 50th goal last week and has been playing terrifie hockey this year, keeping right up with Guy Lafleur. No. 8 Ed Paradis was in the right place at the right time and got the Toros' first goal, assist going to Mark. Then, with a sensational piece of stick handling, Pete Hughes picked up our next goal unassisted. Hard working Mike Knight scored, assists going to Cap- tain Jay Kelly and Pete Hughes. A lot of credit goes to our goalie Ken Cameron who was very sharp in net. Keep up the Howard Woo good work Ken Dryden, "ex- cuse me" I mean Ken Camer- on. It was a penalty packed game, with 11 handed out, 8 penalties going to Cobourg, but players like Kelly Balson, Dan Moriarity, Mark Smith, Greg Martin and defenceman Ian Wheelock who took some hard checks, kept their cool, letting Cobourg take the penalties. They know you can't win a hockey game sitting in the box. Defenceman Chris Moroz and his partner Warren Short played their best game even though Warren was breaking in a new pair of Bauers. The Toros have won their last 6 games and will be starting the playoffs soon. Bay Ridges look out this year. d Poe Wees Dump Markham 3-1 in First Game of Playoffs The Bowmanville Minor Pee Wee Toros, sponsored by Howard Wood Transport, de- feated Markham 3-1 in an extremely well-played 0.M.H.A. play off game at the Memorial Arena in Bowmanville on Saturday night. Jeff Dawson opened the scoring for the Toros at the 2:11 mark of the first period on a slick passing play engine- ered by Jon Clieff. Greg Watson sent Bowmanville into a 2-0 lead less than 2 minutes later, firing a hard shot from the 'slot', the assist going to his left winger Dawson. Mark- ham scored a goal to narrow the margin, the goal coming at the 4:09 mark. Greg Watson, playing a tremendous game for Bowmanville, scored his second goal, the assists going to defencemeniScott Barclay and Pierre St Amand. Chris Clifton was in goal for the Toros and made some spectacular stops to pick up the win. This series promises to be an exciting one as both Markham and Bowmanville play a very similar style of game. Markham has the edge in size, but the Toros are a faster skating club and have excellent balance on all three lines.
