During the evening, the winners of the bird house competition were announced. In first place was Keith Galiagher, centre, with Biliy Walmsley at ieft, second and Kyle Smart at right, third. There were 25 entires m,' ail. Head table guests included, left to right, Danny Van Hemmen, Akela Andy Van Hemmen, Menny Van Hemmen, Marg Quinney, AI Quinney, Raiph Davey, Milt Dakin and Betty Dakin, Mrs. Burns and the Rev. David Burns. Al >the Cubs had made miniature rocking chairs as another project and Keith Gailagher presented one of the models to The Statesman photographer in appreciation of his picture taking over the years. Funds coming in, will be used in another "Special Furid", details of which will be given, later. A "Pancake Supper", sponsored by our U.C.W., is being held, Tuesday evening of this week, in our Church Hall from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and proceeds will go to the "Special Fund". A birthday party was held on Suriday, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. Henderson, in honor of their daughter, Brenda, now Mrs. Lloyd St. John, of Whitby. Others present, besides Brerida and Lloyd, were Mr. and Mrs. David Henderson, of Oshawa, and Mr. Bob Henderson, of Hampton. Brothers Bill and Ronnie Henderson phoned from Letbbridge, Alta., with birthday greetings, as well. Our best wishes to Brenda, and to Mrs. Berniece Hender- son, also celebrating a birth- day, Sundmy!, Mm. and Mrs. Peter Hender- son, and girls, of Bowman- ville, were luncheon guests, Sunday, with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Henderson. Mrs. Florence McEwen, of Peterborough, and Jainie Jobriston, were Sunday callers with Mrs. Agnes Burley. Mm. and Mrs. Anthony Ton were Sunday visitors i Port Hope, with Mm. -and Mrs. John Ton, and family. Mrs. V. Gilmer was a Sundmy supper guest, with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Gilmer, Port Hope. About thirty Newcastle Senior Citizens were guests of Charnel Eleven T.V. Station, in Hamilton, Sunday. A bus picked them up, in Newcastle, at 11:15 a.m., and they were driver to Hamilton,, entertain- ed at lunch, and showed a number of interesting after- noon proceedings, including two tapings of "New Faces of Local Areas." Mr. Bob Willsber, President of the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce, was there, and belped supply necessmry data and information, and all enjoyed the afternoon immensely. Refreshments were served agmiri, later, ti the aftemnoon and they were home by 6:30 p.m. Incidental- ly, the above mentioned "Tapings" will be sbown on T.V. on March 25, as, we feel sure, local people will be interested to learri. Clinton Brown ti Newcastle.ý Newtonville Womer's Insti- tute met at the home of Mrs. May Burley, on Wed., Feb. 21, and President- Bernice Milligan opened witb the Institute Ode, followed by the "Mary Stewart Collect." Minutes of previous meeting were read by Secretmry- Treasurer Jean O'Neill, and adopted. Two large pitchers have been ordered as a donation to Community Hall, instead of the teapots. The matter of disposing of the afghan was discussed and it was finally decided to watt uritil Mrs. Gladys Wood, and Mrs. Rachel Dennis have each spoken to certain parties and have had time to report their decisions. The bus trip was the next matter on the agenda,,and it was moved by Mabel Wade, and seconded by Madelirie Buckley that Carscadden's Bus be bired to go to Yorkdale. Two dates in April were mentioned, and will be decid- ed ccording to weatber conditions, on a motion by Leta Samis, seconded by Queenie Fletcher. "Durham County Achievemerit Day" will be held at Clarke High School on Friday, May 4tb. Sharon Buttery reported there are twelve members in this class, including two boys, and tbey are a fine group, making good progress. The Roll Caîl - "Why I Belong to the Women's Insti- tute", was answered by the nineteen members present. As it was Mrs. Demnis' birtbday next day, all joined ti singirg "Happy Birthday" in ber honor. Mrs. Duxbury thanked everyone for having remembered ber birthday, recently. Unit leader May Burley gave a reading entitled "It Is A Mistake, " after whicb Amelia Lancaster gave a report on the Convention i Toronto, where our afghan was shown, and admired. A synopsis of the reports was given to the leaders of our various projects. The Women's Institute made a large sumn of money, by making, and selling quilt blocks for the "Telathon For YELVERTON Sympathy is extended to the family of octoginarian Her- mani MeGili, formerly of Bethany who passed away this week following a fall causing a fractured hip. Inclusive in the family of Mr. McGill are step- son Mr. Ray McCullough, his wife and family of Yelverton. It is always a pleasure to publicize the efforts of any of our young people who are strivirig to improve their lot and make a name for them- selves i their chosen direc- tion. Mr. Terry Shea of Fleet- wood (onie of the lads we had had the pleasure of coaching over the years in the ballfield) has taken a course i radio anriouncing and is scheduled to complete his course this coming week. Terry is aspiring to be a Sports Annouricer, right down his alley, since Terry is an avid sports enthusiast. We join Terry's many frierids ini wishing him a successful career in his chosen professiori and hope he receives an opportunity where we cari hear him doing his thing. At last, as one of his closest relatives stated, now we cari turri him off, when we get tired listening to him.' Mr. Marti Malcolm accom- panied by Mr, Gordon Plum- pton of Lindsay motored to Greyrocks Que via Sud- bury to enjoy a weeks' skiing at that location. Mr. and Mrs. Allan Gundrie of Barrie are babysitting their grandchildreri while Terry and Brerida spent the weekend curling with friends near Thamesville, Ont. Glad to report Mrs. Etta, Robinson is progressing favourably after breaking ber leg last week anid expects to be released from hospital this week. Daughter Mitzi Fick is begirining to tbink she tran- sferred too soon fromn the Royal Banik at Van Horne and Don Milîs to ber present location. The reason - quite obvious - the staff recently won a Wirtario Draw or such like for 1 million dollars with a individual investment for 45 cents netting each member $45,000. Pretty good odds! Congratulations to our Mother - Mrs. Emma Malcolm of Uxbridge who will have ob- served her 85th birthday on Monday, Feb. 26th. Pleased to relate that she is in fine physical condition consîdering her age, despite having raised "by band" three obstriperous sons! On Suriday we were pleased to have ber as dinner guest to observe ber birthday. Sorry to learri that a former neighbour, now a resident of Port Perry in person of Mr. Howard McMullen, had a bad faîl on ice this week, necessitating a stay in Port Perry Hospital with very pain- fui damage to bis ri-cage. Annivesary Party Valentine night, Feb. l4th proved to be an exciting date for Bill and Shirley Nicholîs of Caesarea when their daughter Cathy Bouque of Oshawa hosted a Dinner party at Emiel's Restaurant, Port Perry, the occasion being their 29th Wedding Arriver- sary. Their son and daughter- in-law Brian and Maria also of Oshawa held a special diriner at their home.
