4 The Canacian Statesman, WESLEY VILLE On Friday, March 2nd, in common with Christian women around the world, Wornen of Hope Township churches met at Welcome for the World's Day of Prayer. The service was prepared by students in the Pan African Leadership course in Zambia. These students said one of the things that the preaching and teaching of Jesus did, ,was to liberate women from a posi- 'tion of inferiority and give them a sense of dignity. Mrs. Mary Kellogg, presi- dent of Welcome UCW, wel- comed ail present and began the service by telling of tensions in Africa, with indvi- duals throughout the congre- atnsnaming some, such as meuaity and injustice. Fol- lowing unison prayer, theý humin, "lKum Ba Yah" was sung. Three ladies from Canton, Mesdames Lena Osland, Shirley Austin, and Beatrice Milîs read scripture from Peter and led in respon- sive readings, "~For the Lord Gives Wisdom". Mrs. Phyllis Symons and Mrs. Gwen Best of Welcome Church read a lesson from Ephesions, with meditation and led in prayers shared by the individuals in the assem- bly. Mrs. Ken Trew, and otber members of Garden Hill church led in responsive readings based on First Corinthians, Chapter 13. The guest speaker for the day was Mrs. Carl Curtis, introduced by Mrs. Norman Chestnut. Mrs. Curtis is the past president of Cobourg Presby- terial. Ladies were divided in groups of four to six to discuss the Biblical injunctions for Christians to- preach good news to the poor, -proclaim liberty for the captive, etc., in the context of today's world. Mrs. Curtis' message concern- ed the need for faith, and the lack of it. Perhaps dependence on tranquillizers takes the place of dependence on God and illustrated ber meaning with a story of two frogs which fell in a jug of cream. When they found they couldn't get out, one gave up, sank and died. The other jumped tili he churned butter and with a solid base, jumped out. A lesson there for us, whicb has been told many times in many ways. Beautiful music was provid- ed by a trio Mrs. Barbara Gray, Mrs. Yvonne Ford and Mrs. June Smith who were accompanied at the organ by Miss Catherine Ford. The congregational singing was accompanied by Mrs. H. Reeve. The offering which is used to support ecumenical projects was received by Berniece Best and Mrs. Margery Ashby and ail joined in the dedication prayer, led by- Mrs. E. Barrowclougb. Mrs. T. Wilson invited the ladies to remain for tea and pronounced the benediction. There was a good attendance although illness and death in the community prevented many from being present. A mild and rainy Sunday morning kept the feeling of spring in the air witb fields rapidly showing brown and the snow melting everywhere in streamsail pouring in a rush to -the lake. -Horned- larks are heard across the fields and other wildlife is appearing. It was a delight on Saturday to see three deer go by a bouse, frisking like lambs in the spring; a grey squirrel made bis appearance where one had not been seen for a long time and a walk tbrough slusb woods flusbed a partridge and a big owl floated from one tree to another. He was smaller tban tbe great grey owl wbicb is stili around. Service at Welcome United Cburch, on Sunday Marcb 4tb, was conducted by Rev. W. bis family, and by Mrs. Olive Lightle in memory of ber sister. Following the church service a brief congregational meeting was held which gave the board of stewards power to make the decîsions concern- ing the repair work to be done on the churcb. With meetings in connection witb this, and practice for the coming AOTS produtin, men of the cburch are=gogto be as busy as the quilters. Also regular Bible study for the season of Lent begins on Tuesday morning at tbe cburcb where ail are welcome. Shelley Payne spent the weekend in the Ottawa area, visiting ber sister, Jennifer and husband, Ivan Hale. Mr. and Mrs. Butterfield Sr. of Napanee bave moved into the former Roy Austin home, next door to their son William. March 7, 1979 SAVE 1,oo) 1MAX WELL lHOUSE, INSTANT COFFEE lO-oz ja99 I.os Our Reg.
