Van Dyk's Midgets Oust Mlton From Penalty FiIled Quarter Finals Now Meet HNespeler la SemimFinails By Don Welsh On Wednesday, Feb. 28, the Van Dyk Major Midgets played the second game in their best of five quarter-final series against Milton. This was a must game for the local lads as they had dropped the opener in Milton by a score of 5 ta 3. Both teams wanted the win very badly and it certainly showed in the style of play. The tempo of the second game was tremendous. Anyone who had seen the opener in Milton had difficulty believîng they were watching the same two teams. Both clubs put forth a fast paced effort that featured good forechecking and excel- lent pressure on the power plays. Even though both teams hustled their hearts out and had some good scoring opportunities, the firstperid belonged to the goaltendters 'as they continually thwarted the offensive efforts. At the end of the first period of play the two teams were deadlocked in a scoreless tie. The second period carried an in the same vein as the first and it began to look like the fîrst goal could well win the game. It wasn't until the game was haif over that a goal was scored. At 7:30 of the middle frame Milton capitalized on a scramble around the Bow- manville net by peppering shots at netminder Brook Cole until one finally gat by him. Four minutes later Brook got his revenge when hie cleared the puck ahead to set up a 2 to 1 break for the Realtars. The SBowmanville winger carried the puck in and using his centre as a decoy, was able to skate across the goalmouth and slip the puck under the confused Milton goalie to tie the game at one apiece. At 1.51 the Realtors capitalized on a power play effort when the Milton goalie was cleanly beaten by a low, hard slap shot just as the puck was being carried in over the blue line. The second period ended with the Van Dyk crew holding a 2 to 1 lead. Just over two minutes into, the third period Bowmanville took advantage of another power play to increase their lead to, 3 toi1. This goal was the result of determination and good passing. The left winger literally barged his way past the Milton blue line defence and into the corner to set up a pass into the slot which led to a shot on which the Milton goalie had no chance. At 10.59, the Realtors increased their lead to 4 to 1 from a faceoff in the Milton end when the Bowmanville centre carried the puck around behind the net and jammed it in the corner. Just over two minutes later the Van Dyk crew scored the final goal of the game when a pass from the corner to the slot was shot quickly past the helpless netminder. This was the Realtors' third power play goal of the game and ended the scoring at Bowmanville 5, Milton 1. On Saturday, March 3, the Van Dyk Major Midgets played Milton at Darlington Arena. The series was tied at a game apiece to set the stage for this crucial encounter. The game was a fast paced, hard hitting cliffhanger in which the referees chose to caîl only the most flagrant violations. Far too many cheap shots and skirmishes after the whistle was ignored by the officials. By the time the dlock had expired any resemblance the activities might have had to hockey was minimal. In the first three minutes, Milton jumped into a two goal lead to put the Realtors behind the right baîl before they really got rolling. At 8.09 the Novice February i7th Bon Rae - 1 - B3rad Rushak. February 24 Kinsman - 7 - Scott Burns 3, Taras clicked on a power play but couldn't earn the equalizer against the hurtling skaters from Milton. The first period ended with Milton still ahead 2 tai1. Only 15 seconds into the second period, Bowmanville tied the score at 2 apiece only ta have Milton again take the lead at 11.19 with a man advantage. For the next several minutes Milton applied tremendous pressure but netminder Brook Cale stymied their every effort, making particularly dazzling saves on two breakaways. With 1.49 left in the middle frame the Van Dyk crew garnered the equalizer ta end the period in a 3 ta 3 deadlock. Penalties nearly killed the Realtors in the third period. Milton scored power play goals at 10.04 and 7.38 ta take a 5 ta 3 Iead. OnIy the fantastic efforts of the Van Dyk goalie prevented Milton from having an even larger lead at this point in the game. The Realtors cut the Milton lead ta 5 to 4 with 6.40 lef t in the period when they scored while playing short handed. With 2.26 remaining, the Taras pulled their netminder for a face off in the Milton zane, won the draw ta the extra attacker and tied the game. A fast break by Bowmanville was stopped by the Milton goalie but he couldn't recover in time to prevent the trailing Tara from flipping in' the rebound. Bowmanville had gone ahead for the first Urne in the game with only 12 seconds lef t on the dlock. Final score Bawmanville 6, Milton 5. The fourth game of the series was played in Milton on Sunday. The fast pace of the previaus night's game had taken its toîl of both clubs. Neither club skated with as much zip. The style of play was still quite chippy only this time the referees tried to maintain some control. They handed out 45 penalties, with 27 of them going ta Milton. The Van Dyk crew were eager to finish the series and get away from the crude play that characterizes the Milton squad's style. The Realtar took control early in the game and neyer looked back. They scored on a power play at 10.30 and a breakaway at 4.15 to go ahead 2 to 0 at the end of the first period. They tallied 2 more in the second while allowing only one, to lead 4 to 1 at the end of the middle frame. Af ter picking up their fifth marker at 12.45 of the third period, the Van Dyk boys cancentrated on trying not to be sucked in by the goon squad tactics of the Milton players. This is not easy ta do against a club that lets twa players corne off the bench after the gamne is over and charge across the ice ta flatten you from behind. Hopefully Hespeler will ice a team that is interested in playing hockey ýso the semi- finals will be better to watch. They won it on Sunday at Milton but it wasn't much fun, just satisfaction that they held their own against rugged opposition. 0aison Scores Hot Trick Ast McGregor's Tie Sories With Ajax After 3 t. 1 Win On February 2th between 7 and 8 Ip.m. at Darlington Sports Centre, one tough hockey game was played, with the Balson boys leading the McGregor Hardware-Toros ta a 3 ta i win over Ajax, tying the playoffs at 3 points apiece. Ajax scored the first goal in the 2nd period, with Bowman- ville coming back to pick up 3 goals in the 3rd. The line of Kelly Balson centre, Mike Knight left wing, and Captain Jay Kelly right, were really flying, with Kelly Balsan getting 3 goals, Mike and Jay getting 2 assists apiece. A lot of credit , oes ta goaltender Todd Balson, who played solid between the pipes, undoubtedly Todd's best game yet. We can't forget our 4 rugged- defencement Warren Short,' Chris Moroz, Peter Hughes and Ian Wheelock contributing much ta the game. What? Mark Hickey didn't get a point? I don't believe it, he sure worked, as did Ed. Paradis, centre Greg Martin, Mark Smith and Dan Moria- rity. Your turn boys next weekend, at the 2 day Pene- tatig tournament. Good luck - on that one.
