The Golden Years Supplement, Wednesday, March 21L 1979 3 Stili Going Strong After 56. Years don't travel as muCh any more, preferring toenijoy the pleasures of their flowers. As they look back on their, years together, the Skinners major observation is about the changes they've seen. "It's the changes through the years I recaîl", Mrs. Skinner stated. "Everythîflg changed so rnuch. You have your ups and downs, though even if you're only married for 20 yeàrs. Marriage, tbo, is changing. There's 50 littie sacred about it anymore. A few words are said and you're man and wife; a few months inter the people are going their separate ways." 1When you think about what the Skinners have lived through, it's easy to see why it's the changes that are impressed upon tbemn: two world wars, the depression, the list is endless. These days, when a May- Decemnber marriage refers to the length rather than the character of the union, Mr. and Mrs. Skinner could only, offer one piece of advice to young people contemaplating. it: 'don't rush into it.' "Stop and think about it," emphasized Mrs. Skinner. "Don't just jump into marriage and, take too much for granted. You have to learn to give and take before you're ready to wed." Forty-nine years ago, Mr. Skinner's Parents celebrated their Golden Anniversary. It seems to have become a family tradition., Professional and Personal Attention Courtesy and Dignity Morris Fanerai Chapel EST. 1881 4 Division St. Phone 623-5480 Bowman vitle Mr. and Mrs. Harold Skinner wil have been married for 56 years on Decem- ber 19 this year, and they are stili going strong. Mr. and Mrs. Skinner are en- joying life on Sunnicrest Boulevard and prefer to take things easy now, doing Just a littie of what they like. Doing anything for 50 years is bard enough, but when you talk about being married for more than 50 years, you're getting into the realm of the impossible as far as some people are concerned. For Mr. and Mrs. Harold Skinner, however, there's notbing impossible about it. They've been married for over 55 years and are still gomng strong. The year was 1923, the town was Newcastle. Harold Skinner and is bride-to-be were both in their mid- twenties when they tied the knot. Today, tbey're living in Bo\i'manville and enjoying their garden. "It was somiething we did't know when we started out," said Mrs. Skinner. "We didn't know whether we'd be married 10 years or 50 years." Mr. Sknner is an old sheep farmer. For years he exibited prize sbeep in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. He was at the first Royal Ontario Winter Fair. Today, bis farm is the site of the Tyrone water well. The Skinners lived in Tyrone for 40 years after they were married, but 14 years ago they moved to Bowman- ville. Mrs. Skinner said they still enjoyed working in the garden. Up until last year, Mr. Skinner stili played an active role in the sheep farm. The couple have two children: a son, and a daughter; and eight grandchildren. The son lives in Tyrone and is continuing in bis father's footsteps. Their daughter, Dorothy Sharp lives in Enniskillen. "I guess - we'd do it al again", Mrs. Skinner said. "The only thing I didn't like was talking about sheep and fairs. I got so very weary of it. He was off to Ottawa,' Montreal and Toronto and I'd be on the farm with two children." "Yes,'" interjected Mr. Skinner, "but if it hadn't ben for that, we wouldn't have seen a lot of the country." They agreed about this. Together they've travelled to the east coast several times, to many of the border states, and Mr. Sknner has been to the west ýcoast as well. They ...ON YOUR DAYI..
