Waverley Public Sehool will ac- commodate ail kindergarten to grade six students in the Southwest, Bowmanville area thiÏs xa-ll-but ewil need 10 portables to do so. In a report to the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education Thursday night, Western area superintendent John Gowing said the new 12 room sehool should be completed for this September and will accommodate approximately 370 students. He noted at least 575 students are projected to attend this school in the fail. Chairman Andy Thompson ex- plained that the board, once it finally decided a school was needed for this area, asked Ministry of Education support for a 15 classroom building. The Ministry approved of only 12 rooms. The fact that 10 portables will be required in addition to the new school is " a very unusual situation", said Thompsoni, At present, grades one to four are housed in 16 portables on the Waverley School site, 83 kindergar- ten students are bused to Central Public School and 112 grade five and six pupils walk to Central. All will be able to attend the new school in Sep- tember. This, said Gowing, will mean there will be five or six empty classrooms in Central Public School in Septem- ber. Trustee Bill Carman said the board should be prepared to accept some criticism from the Ministry and the public for a situation where one school will have empty classrooms while another needs por- tables to house aIl its students. Thompson said the extra space i Central Public School can be used to accommodate the library an&~ Western area consultant's office. They are now located in the basement. Mr. Gowing also suggested that future development within the town will probably cause boundary changes which would ultimately partially or completely filI these rooms. Thompson noted another large subdivision i upd to be buiît near St. Ste ph ens School and this may mean another 250 school aged children in the Waverley School area. Gowing said that in light of this, more portables may be needed for the school or perhaps "we'll have to look at another solution." Director of Education Frank Thom said it appears as though all request for portables in the faîl can be satisfied. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. Mardi 28. 1979 i Smoking Speakout for, Kida If today's children graw Up ta be nonsmoking aduits, says the Lung Association, this single fact would dramatically decrease the problem of lung disease in this country. How about kids themselves? What do they think? Here's a sampling of very personal reaction from some sixth- graders polled by the Lung Association. - in magazines, you almost always see a beautiful girl or guy smoking a cigareete, but smokers are usually just aid hags with yellaw teeth and bad breath. - Remember, the difference between a burnt-aut cigarette and a bad pair of lungs is that one can be replaced and -the other can't. - Da you knaw why people smoke? They think it's fun and they think they're hot. But they're just hurting them- selves. - Smoking daesn't make any- one bigger or smarter. - If you smoke ask someone if thev will help you stoip. - My own Mom and Dad might die young. - When I go into a room with someone smoking I think ta myseif, 'That person just isn't using his head . - It is a killer and as for me, my 111e is too gaad ta throw away on cheap cigarettes. - Kids have an advantage because they can find out about what smoking can do ta their bodies. It's true that today's chiidren have an advantage over their parents. Today there are lots of programs, many of them sponsared by iung associations, that heip them realize the real effects of smoking. *Ask some of the kids you know what they think about smoking. If they haven't *tald you already. And ta help anyone you care about ta kick the habit, ask for help from Durham Region Lung Association, your local Christmas Seal People, at 723-3151.
