TerrariuMS7 This is a very interesting topic, and very often we have the misconcep- tion that they are hard to maintain, but witb a littie foresight it can be fun and also will give you much satisfac- tion. What are terrariums, we are dealing with two categor- ies of terrariums, the first one is the open concept of terrar- ium, and the second is the closed or bottie terrarium. The open terrariums is one of the easiest to maintain, since you are able to dig right in with your hands,, you can dlean them easily, and insert the growing medium right in the container and also the plants can be placed without too much difficulty. Most terrariums in this category ped, 15 minutes; cut into 2" chunks. In large saucepan saute onion and garlic in oil until tender. Add tomatoes, wine, walnuts, parsley, bay leaf and cayenne pepper. Bail rapidly, uncovered, 5 minutes. Add fish. Reduce heat; cover: cook 20 minutes, or until fish becomes opaque and flakes easily with a fork. Serve with slices of garlic toasted French bread. Serves 6. Mrs. Zetta Dilling returned last week from a most enjoyable three week vacation in Hawaii. The Bowmanville District Horticultural Society held their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 21st at the library. Mr. Ray Halward of the Royal Bontanîcal Gar- dens gave a talk and demon- stration on gardenîng under lights. He showed the mem- bers how to grow seedlings and cuttings indoors in prep- aration for spring planting. Everyone enjoyed this inter- esting, and informative evening; a lunch was served afterwards. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Richards, Linda and Brett, have returned from a pleasant vacation in Las Vegas, Phoenix and the Grand Canyon. Jill Campbell of the Courtice Secondary School staff spent the winter break in Freeport, Bahamas. are fish tanks or made from redwood cedar and glazed with glass, now those can have a complete covering by placing a sheet of heavy plastic or a sheet of glass over the top changing it ta a closed environment. Closod terrariums are min- iature worlds, which have their own environment such as the recycling of moisture, and if properly made will require little or no maintenance. For this type of terrarium all kinds of containers can be used such as water bottles, wine bottles, narrow top brandy snifters and today we have a selection of plastic terrariums on the market specially for this purpose, when using a glass container, make sure that the glass is clear such as water bottles can sometimes be green, and plants wrnl not grow ta their best advantage and you will not ho able ta enjoy this type because the plants will appear as a blurr. Terrariums can be used for creating your own setting, such as a wood land setting, desert, rockery, caastlîne complete with water in a bowl or by using an aval mirror, you can soe different kinds of figurines such as dwarfs, animals, mass rocks, sand etc. Care of a terrarium: There is a bit of care ta look after themi, since the plants are living icrocosm of nature, just likein nature where the elements look after this care. When plantings are made with cacti and succulents, they will require a location that will give them at least a few hours of light, specially if you have some of the flowering cacti types in your terrarium. For foliage plants you should have at least a few hours lu the morning and again in the late afternoan or you can use artîficial light such as the florescent light, then use one of the new grow lighttype tubes or use 1 cool white and 1 warmn light florescent in the 20 ta 40 watt size, or you can use the new bulb type or' in- cadescent light bulb speciglly made for proper plant growth. Watoring should only be done when it is required, and the' best way ta tell is when the growing medium appears ta crack or the plants are starting ta droop, and the case of over watering remove the top of the container for soveral hours until the moisture on the walls of the container have dried up. Little or no plant food is required especially when you have used a proper growing medium. Insects are seldom a problem due ta the closed environment, if they happed ta appear in the terrarium then spray a small amount of house plant insect spray into the container and this will do the trick. Terrar- iums can be hung from ceilings by handing ropes, just make sure that they are not hanging in direct sunlight, since thon they will burn the plants. Next woek, Planting of' the terrarium. Until next week, happy gardening.
