JR C ROUND-UP Dedication is the only word that fittingly describes the efforts of two members of the Port Darlington Marina Hotel Jr. C. "Red Eagles" hockey team, Dan Strike and Wayde Preston. These two players, have been playing minor hockey in town for many years and are in their final year at B.H.S. After giving it much thoiîght, and thinking they were not jeopardizing the team, they left for Florida for the winter break. Through a misunderstanding of the rules, an ineligible player was used in the fourth game of the quarter finals a gainst Gananolque which Giananoque protested, and the OHA ruled the game be awarded to the G Men. When Bowmanville lost the fifth game in Gananoque, the Eagles were definitely behind the eight bahl. The parents of the two players, the Maurice Preston's and the AI Strike's, sprang into action to bring the boys .home by plane for Wednesday's g ame. Walter Frank of Frank's Real Estate Ltd. on holidays ini Florida, was able to arrange seats on a plane which was met in Toronto by Jim Cryderman who drove the players back to Bowmanviile. Gerald Brunt, a student at York tlniversity, deep into studying for exams, re-arranged his study sehedule to play for the team. Wayde Preston flew back to Florida on Friclay to bring back the van hie drove down for the holiday. Enough said. Super effort. John Osborne was the lucky winner of $128. in the programme draw at the Jr. C game here Sunday. Imagine! Not only do you get to see super hockey, you also have a chance at winning prize money. So much has been said about the return of the players from Florida, which was deserved, but let's not forget the rest of the team. We have one of the finest Jr. C teams anywhere, and who have every chance of going ail the way this year. Many of these boys have played ail their minor hockey in town and have conducted themselves in a manner com plimentary to the, town. Their parents, coaches, managers etc. are also solidly behind the teami. At Sunday's game here, John Conboy h'ad a terrific game as did Dan Strike and Kirk Kemp. Stew Roberts in goal has been great as bas alter- nate goalie, Bob Koczulab. Ralph Cryderman who is dynamite around the goal is'having a great series. Let's not forget Captain Brian Simpson, IRick Scott, Tom Dywer, Nick'Van Seggelen, dGerald Brunt, Jerry Johnston, Jerry Leddy, Mike Adams, Gary Nemisz, Brad Godfrey, Don Farrow and John Kane. Wayde Preston was not able to be iere for Sunday's game. AIl these players are con- tributing to the success of the team. Coach of the team is Paul Robinson, manager is Buck Janack, and tramner John Cook. Congratulations to every- one on taking the Gananoque series the hard way with an extra game. While on the subject of Jr. C hockey, there are several persons who give their time week in, week ouit and year after year without renumeration to keep the club moving. Jean Devitt has been with the club over 20 years, Joan and Wilf Simpson, IPoug McFeeters, Pat and Bob Marshall, Dave Snowden, Bob Butler and Don Wilcox are ail to be congratulated. In the opening game of the semi-finals here, the Red Eagles defeated Penetang Kings 7-4, with the Eagles outshooting Penetang 35-23. Two men to' watch on the Penetang team are Paul Robillard and Brian Pilon, they are and have been outstand- ing players, but Eagles are being picked to take the series in five gamnes. The Kings are not as big a team and lac k the strong, efence that Gananoque had. Wayde Preston will be back for the next game, Friday night in Penetang. John Conboy has been having an outstanding series against Gananoque and in the opener against Penetang. In the sixth gaine against Gananoque John, who is considered -by many, to be one, of the strongest two-way centremen in the league, withi great forechecking ability, came up with two goals1 and five assists for a big total of seven points. In thet opener against, Penetang John also had a great game. Future Games of Semi-Finals: Bowmanville in Penetang, Friday March 30, April 4th, April lth. Next game here Sunday at 7:30 by Don Wilcox Bowmanville's Junior C Eagles started their semi- final playoff series against the Penetang Kings with a large crowd at the Bowmanville arena and a 7-4 victory. The Port Darlington Marina and Hotel Junior C crew scored four goals in the first period of play and with one of their few fast starts behind them, they coasted to a win. The Kings' playoff path saw them. defeat Gravenhurst and Oro in their own league. Then thîey upset Alliston before playing against the Eagles. Mariners' first period goal came from John Conboy who beat Dave Dupuis in the Kings' net on a screen shot set up by Ralph Cryderman. John Conboy, who is presently playing great two-way hoc- key, stole the puck, scoring unassisted in the next goal. Then Jerry Leddy gave the Eagles a three-goal lead, taking a backhand pass from Don Farrow after Gerald Brunt stated the play. Next, Kirk Kemp deflected a point drive by Brian Simpson to score a fourth goal for the Eagles. Jerry Johnson also assisted. The Kings' attack got mov- ing in the second period when their sensational offensive Bamu ATTENTION ç GOLFERS!! It Won't Be Long Now! Brad Godfrey's goal uncovered in the slot was the resuit of forechecking by Kirk Kemp. Jerry Johnson also assisted. Paul Robillard's heavy slapper accounted for the next goal assisted by Brian Pilon and Garry Walter. Then Jerry Johnson put out the King's fire by digging for the loose puck and scoring assisted by Kirk Kemp and Brad Godfrey. Ralph Cryder- man's goal on a quick release shot from the face off , assisted by Don Farrow who won the face off and Jerry Leddy, accounted for the last goal of the period. The only goal of the third period was again scored by the Pilon - Robillard duo who recorded eight of the Kings' i points. When they travel to Pene- tang Friday night, the Red Eagles must not have a case of over confidence as one game does flot make a series. Alliston, which was heavily favored to defeat Penetang is now polishing up the golf clubs instead of playing the Red Eagles in the semi-fînals. Penetang, with 1,700 rabid fans on hand, will be tough to -,eat on home ice. . enetang had 200 fans in ,Bowmanville, Sunday night and Bowmanville fans plan- ning to go to the game Friday night would be well advised to get there early. The third game goes Sunday night in Bowmanville. Corne out and support your team. The opinion fruin some of the Penetang players seems to be that the Red Eagles will flot pose as much of a problem to them as did Alliston.
