Every year at this time everyone is wondering whether we are stili going to get some frost, so that they can start planting their annuais, weli 1 was talking to a neighbour of an oid farmer who dlaims that we wili have no more frost, since the frogs have been frozen, 3 times already, 50 if you can belleve this, we can start now. Traditionaiiy the holiday weekend is the start, and this corning weekend wiii be earlier than usuai, so watch for frost warnîngs and cover the tender annuals if the weather turns. Annuais this year will again DIRK BRINKMAN C'. 623-3621 L State Farrn Fîre anci uasualty Company AVA ABLET be the basic flowering plant in the garden, to give you that rnuch needed color after a winter. The supply of good annuals is on the tight side, since the oul shortage is also showing up in the fuel con-, sumption in the greenhouse, the cost of boxplants have been kept within reason by mass production and other labor and fuel saving devices. You will undoubtedly note that there is a variety of prices, and it will be worth it to check how many plants you get per box for a certain price, since I have seen boxes with only 3 plants in the box, and on the other hand sorne boxes wili have nine plants, sp check the quantity for the best buy. Impatiens appear to be becong more popuiar since they will do extrerneiy well in partial or total shade, or rather without sun, they wili give you a mass of color and now corne in tail and short varieties and in a wide range of colors. Fibrous begonias are also being planted in larger quantities, again for areas without too rnuch sun, their brilliant color wili give any flowerbed the finishing touches. This year rather than plant the sarne as you did last year try sornething different, Verbena makes an excellent bedding plant, and cornes in a variety of coiors - blues, purpies, reds, whites and pinks, or give the Phlox farnily, a try, there is a globe phlox and the twinkle phlox, grow- in& to about 12 inches in height, and are very colorful with their red, pink and other colors. For quick resuits for color, the geranium is the best, it will have a flower on the pant now showing what the flower wili be, and it will spread quickly and give you a good showing, I always like to have them pianted between the evergreens, it is fast and instant, after planting the geraniums, 1 usually cover the soul with a layer of cocoa bean shelîs and I arn set for the year, since this wili keep the weeds down and it looks dlean and neat, on some of the beds that have a lot of weeds, we usuaily dlean out the weeds first and then apply a product caiied NO.HOE, which forms a barrier across the top 3 to 4 inche s and will not let any seeds sprout, so it wili save weeding these heds, the beauty of this product is that you can put No-hoe on and immediately plant right into the soul without any danger of damage to the annual. Driving home from church yesterday, my wife remarked how nice the dandelions look- ed, and we started to discuss why we are always spraying, to get rid of them and why we feel that this LOWLY plant is a pest, well to be honest I did not have a satisfactory answer, 1 guess the main reason is that we feel a lawa is green so they don't belong and therefore they rnust be kiiied, sometimes I wonder if we have our priorities in proper perspective, aithough 1 don't like them in the iawn and do spray to get rid of thern, so I guess I arn just like the rest and arn following the leader. Until next week, happy gardening. LOSE SWIMMING HOLE When the Ministry of Trans- portation and Communi- cations re-aligns the Graham Creek in Newcastle Village, a wel.known swimming hole might disappear. Jean Canty, a Newcastle resident who lives nearthe Graharn Creek south of High- way Two, said last week that she and her husband, James, have been informed that the swimming hole on their pro- perty may be removed wben the Ministry makes changes la the course of the creek. Apparently the Ministry is not interested in putting back the swirnming area. Mrs. Canty said that Durham East MPP Sam Cureatz has been approached to see if it is stili possible to save the swimming hole. 1, ol could win one of 6OGRANDPIZE "Summer FUnTrps to Marînelad.
