They took home the trophy donated in 1972 by Ede and Gary Cole in mem- ory of Fred Cole who, for many years prior to his death in 1971 was a stalwart sup- porter of the Bowmanville club. The Cole family also donated elegant carving sets as special prizes for the winners as well as the delicious sandwiches enjoyed with hot tea by ail contestants after the first game. In the first game Clarence Oke and, Mervyn Brock of Bowmanville got off to a fast start by scoring 7 points (out of a maximum of 8) in the first end against "Bus" Coppin and 1. Boyd of Whitby and repeat- ed this feat in the 8th end. By the l4th and last end they had accumulated 28 points but were allnwed to count only 21, the remaining 7 being scored as a "Plus" to be used only to break a tie. John Morrison and Jerry Oatway of Oshawa were close behind them with 20 points, followed by Garrett and his partner with 18. After the tea interval the game was resumed with pairings based on scores for the first game (high vs high). Garrett and Lott defeated Vic Highfield and Bill Matthews of Oshawa (winners of the trophy last year) 20 - 13 to give them a cumulative score of 38 which put them ahead of Morrison and Oatway. The latter totalled 34 at this point after a very close game with Oke and Brock. In the second game Len Sheridan and Pete Simmons of Lindsay had a good win (21 plus 1 to 6) over Ned Town and Russ Mann of Port Hope which, with a win of 13 - 7 in the first game gave them a total of 34 plus 1 and qualified them to meet Garrett and Lott in the third game. This was played after the dinner interval, abbreviated to about an hour because of the inclement weather. Garrett and Lott were in terrific form in the third game, taking two 5 ends as well as a 4 from their opponents and eventually winning 21 plus 1 to il for a grand total of 59 plus 1. This was enough to win the trophy as Morrison and Oatway scored only 18 (10 of them in the last three ends) against 8 by Syd Elsden and Bill Tewksbury of Lindsay, for a total of 52 - and second prize. Other prizes went as follows: High Two-Game Winners: Len Sheridan and Pete Simmons of Lindsay af ter a tie with Joe Brown and Jack Hunter of Oshawa had been decided in their favour on the basis of fewer points scored by opponents. High One-Game Winners: Ab Mavin and Jim Fair of Bowmanville (Mike Reynolds replaced Fair in the second and third games when the latter was taken iii). Second High One-Game Winner: Vic Highfield and Bill Matthews of Oshawa. There was also a tie for High One-Game Winners but Mavin was placed ahead of Highfield *@snack bar îmerry-go- round and two other rides because of fewer points scored by opponents.
