CONGRATULATIONS - to Susan Ulrich, a member of the recently formed national women's team and a member of the Maple Leaf Judo Club, who won a gold medal in the under 65 kilo division for Cadets, and a silver medal in the women's division in the Canadian Judo Champ- ionship events held recently at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. EXCITING- - was the name of the game between the Eastern vs. Western Ail Stars Senior EOBA game, Sunday night in Port Hope. The Eastern Al Stars led most of the game until the Western got rolling in the eighth innings to tie the game 9 ail. The game then went two full innings of overtime with the Easterns winning 11-9 on two wild throws. Glen Laby of Peterborough was chosen most valuable p layer of the game. Representing Bowmanville were Steve Parker, Jim Lacy, Mike Corneil, John and Ron Stainton. From Newcastle were Steve West, Bruce Alldred, and Terry Sarginson. FIVE - boat motors, 45 life jackets, 1l five gallon gas tanks, as well as property valued at $3,000 was lost in a fire that broke out last Wed- nesday at Riay's Boat Rentais, at Bewdley. NEWCASTLE - Golf, Course reports that the first woman to score a hole-in-one on the Newcastle Golf Course is Ella Hordicka, a member of the newly formed ladies league, who aced the l7th hole on Tuesday, July 3rd. Witnesses were Ruth Bonathan and Florence Tuson. BOWMANVILLE'S - swim team under the dir- ection of Joan Santomero competed in their first meet of the season, last Saturday, at the beautiful new Port Hope Sports Coniplex. Port Hope won the meet but the locals made a good showing and enjoyed the day. TIIRtEE -- tennis courts will be constructeci at Courtice Secondary School, hopefuily within the next ten weeks, so that play may begin before the season ends. Located at the Southwest corner of Courtice Road and Nash Road the courts, will be open to students and the public. The cost is estimated at approximately $32,000. Bowmanville United Major Atom Soccer Team The Bowmanviile United Major Atom Soccer team, sponsored by Checkers Variety, has been representing Bowmanville in soccer action against teams in the Durham Region and from as far away as Peterborough. The Bowmanville Merchants had both the past week and it paid off in two big victories. Last Wednesday, they defeat- ed Ajax 4-1 and on Sunday turned back Little Britain 3-2. This leaves their record at 7-5. Against Ajax, starter Jim Stacey was very strong, allowing nine hits and one run in the six innings he pitched. He walked two batters and struck out six. LarryForsey came on for the save, allowing only three hits in three innings. John Stainton and Steve Parker each had one bit and scored two runs. Jim Stacey had two bits with Ron Stainton and Ralph Cryderman each getting one. Cryderman had three RBI's and Ron Stainton one. Last Sunday at Soper Creek, Barney Holmes got his first start and pitched very well. He changed speeds consistent- ly and kept the Little Britain batters off balance. He worked seven innings, gave up seven hits, two walks, struck out one and was credited with no runs against in picking up bis first win. Again it was Larry Forsey coming in for the save and doing a fine job in mopping Up. Merchants scored single runs in the second, third, and fifth' innings while Little Britain rallied for two in the ninth. In the second, Ron Stainton singled, advanced on Barney Holmes' single, and scored on Bruce Welsh's RBI single. In the third Doug Crough walked and eventually scored on Ron Stainton's second bit of the game. In the fifth, Murray O'Brien singled, stole second and scored on Ron Stainton's hit which was bobbled by the second baseman. Mike Cornel also had two hits with John Stainton and Doug Smart gaining one each. The Mercbant's next home game is Wed., Juiy il when, Ajax will again supply the opposition at 6:30. The follow- ing weekend is a busy one, with Belleville here Saturday at 2, Kendal Sunday at 2 and the Mterchants returning Monday at Belleville at 7:30. The Merchants are participating in the Whitby- Durham baseball tournament this week. Tuesday they played Welland, with the winner playing Saturday morning at 9:30 and the loser Points 8, 4 4 2 1 playing Friday night at 7. Al games to be pllayed at Whitby_ Iroquois Park diamond. L & L Tool Muondles Defeat Lilie Britoin 14M3 By L. Barko On Wednesday, June 27, Bowmanville L & L Tool Juveniles travelled to Little Britain and came home with a win. Pitcher Joe Nowlan was up for this game, as bis pitching was outstanding with 18 strike-outs. Brad Godfrey, who bas been out witb an injury, played behind the plate and did a fine job. Dean Rutherford started off, getting the only run in the first inning. Little Britain came up with two runs in the second, hit by T. Jenkins and T. Tbornbury. In the fourth, T. Thornbury hit another run, putting Little Britain abead 3 - 1. Those were their only runs. In the fifth, Dean Pegg, Scott Linton, and Dean Rutherford brougbt in runs, Rutherford being credited an RBI. Kevin Gibson was injur- ed in the sixth and was relieved by Rick Bain. Four runs in the seventb were scored by Mark Luxton, Nowlan, Godfrey, and Steve Cole. Godfrey receiving 2 RBI's, Nowlan received one. In the eighth, Paul Sero made an excellent catch and was also credited with an RBI. Marc Richards, Steve Cole, Rutherford and Luxton brougbt in another four runs, putting the score at 12 - 3. The final bits in the nintb were by Marc Richards and Steve Cole, leavîng the score 14 - 3. An RBI is also credited to Jeff Edmondson. Little Britain's losing pitcb- er was K.' Jenkins, who 'was relieved by T. Thornbury. Bowmanville was wel organized and aIl players deserve credit. The next home games are July 4 at 6: 15, against Ajax and Sunday, July 8tb, 2: 00 against Little Britain. Botb wîll be played at Soper Creek Park. Right from the start of the first haîf Bowmanville jumped into an early lead with a fine goal by newcomer Tim Whalen and from then on it was ail Bowmanville. Fine offensive work by Pat Mastrangelo, Mike Knight, Trent Nelson gave Bowmanville a 4-O haif time lead. In the second haîf it was all Bowmanville again with Mike Day getting a goal and other goals by Trent, Pat, Tim and Mike Knight. Oshawa was kept off the scoreboard with fine defensive play by David Stone and Mark Hickey and good midfield play by Vaughan Chambers. The score being 3 -3. Baker opened the score in the first haîf with a long dropping shot that fooled the Hampton keeper. Hampton came back to tie the same at 1 - 1. On Thurs., 28th June, Hampton Squirt soccer team tied Newcastle O - 0. This was a much better performance by the Hampton team. A good game by the goalkeepers Paul Hayman in the first baîf and David Killens in the 2nd. Best chance for Hampton came in the 2nd baîf when Graig Gardner broke through the defence to shoot the bal just wide of the goal. Lonney Gibson played a strong game in defence.
