MICHAEL BYRNE A bricklayer by trade, Michael Byrne of 96 Brock St. W., Oshawa, died at Oshawa General Hospital, Monday, Sept. 10, 1979. Born June 21, 1918, at Bouley County, Wexford, Ireland, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Larry Byrne. He was married in London, England, on Dec. 26, 194S to Anne Fagan. A resident of Oshawa since 1957, he was a member of St. Gregory's Church. He was a member of the Bricklayers' Union Local 20, and of the Canadian Corps. He is survived by bis wife, Anme; three daughters, Mrs. Bll Buday (Anne) of Bow- manvrnle, Mrs. Douglas Tobin (Kathleen). and Mrs. Jerry Skochko (Mari), both of Oshawa; a son, Michael of Toronto; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Rowe, Miss Josie Byrne and Mrs. Mary Ann Harvey, ail of Ireland. two brothers, Jim and Tom, both of Ireland; and six grand- children. Mr.. Byrne rested at the Armstrong, Funeral Home,- Oshawa. Mass of Christian burial was held in St. Gregory's Church Thursday at 9 a.m. Interment Resurrec- tion Cemetery. Rev. Laurence McGough officiated. Prayers were recited at the funeral home Tuesday at 7:30 P.m. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer' Society would be appreciated. BRENTON A. ROSS (BUD) FOGG It was with sincere regrets, that citizens of Bowmanville and area, learned of the pasing of Brenton A. Ross (Bud) Fogg, aged 53, on Saturday, September 8th, 1979, in Oshawa General Hospital. He had been ill for about a year and a half. He was the son of George and Emily Fogg, and was born and educated in Orono. In 1947 he was married to Alice Louise Fogg and had resided in Bowmanville for 31 years. "Bud" as he was popularily known to everyone, had been employed at the Bowmanville Foundry for 10 years, and for the past 20 years as a car salesman at MacDonald Ford Sales, Bowmanville. He had enjoyed the hobby of antiquing for some time. Left to moura bis passing are is wife Alice, son Bob Hayward, daughters Dianne Warren and Margaret McLean, son Allan Fogg,, two' grandsons Richard Hayward and Jeffrey McLean. Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the Morris Funeral Chapel, with Archdeacon Thomas Gracie officiating, and Mrs. Albert Cole providing funeral music on the chapel organ. Palîbearers were Messrs. Les MacDonald, Eric Snyder, Russ Wilson, Tom Wilson, Rick Bates, and Norm (Butch) Lambert. Among the many beautiful floral tributes received, attesting to the esteem in which "Bud" was held, were tokens received from MacDonald Ford Sales, Leblanc Real Estate, and Toronto Dominion Bank. ELMO STE VEN HENDREN An employee of the Johns- Manville Company for 22 yêars, Elmo Steven Hendren passed away at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, on Thursday, August 9th, 1979: He was in bis 85th year. He had lived at 48 Liberty St. South, Bowmanville, for il yasand had previously rsdd in Whitby and Warsaw, Ont. Born and educated in Warsaw, Mr. Hendren was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hendren (Rowe). A mechanic by trade, he had his own garage in Warsaw for 23 years. He was also a mail driver in Warsaw and a beekeeper from the early age of 17. He was a member of the Warsaw United Church. Mr. Hendren is survived by bis wife, Leah; daughters Shirley (Mrs. Terry McBride); Diane (Mrs. Ron Huntley); and son, Ken; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. ' - The funeral was held Monday at the Morris Funeral Chapel. Rev. E. Ewtushik Counillor Maurice Prout asked Newcastle Council what the Durham Region is doing about the "deplorable" condition of Liberty St. during a council session Monday, September 10. "I don't know how long the people are going to put up with, this. It's the worst road in the Region,," the Bowmanville Councillor said. H-e suggested that if the Durham Region cannot do any long-term work on the street, at least some holes could be filled in., Newcastle Mayor Garnet ickayd, a member of Durhàm's public 'works committee said the improve- ments to Liberty St. are under consideration. "It's not easy Suggest New- Playing Field For Hampton Newcastle's Chairman of community services says he hopes to see a basebal diamond and soccer field developed on property behind the Darlington Arena in Hampton. Counillor Maurice Prout told the Statesman last week that about eight acres of land are available for the soccer pitch and ball diamond. He suggested that this property, owned by the Town of Newcastle, would be an ideal place for a playing field. Councîllor Prout added that it would be especially useful as ,a-sports field -because ample parking is available at the nearby Darlington Sports Centre. Mrs. A.- Ewtushik commented on the motto 'Courage is what it takes to stand up and be counted, also what it takes to sit down and listen.' She said courage is defined as mental or moral strength, a test of bravery. There are many acts of heroism that are done automatically and without thought of danger. The Viet- namese people are a good example at this time. Our local policiticans show personal courage and loyalty. It also takes courage to listen to the thoughts of others, even if very different from our own., Mrs. A. Ewtushik showed a film entitled 'Nikkolina', the story of a young Greek girl and how she learned to cope with strange ýways, a strange sounding name and thoughts of a visiting 'Greek aunt, of different upbringing. Meeting' closed with the repeating of the Collect in unison. Lunch of peach shortcake and whipped cream, tea and coffee was served by group in charge.
