This report stated that the firm had previously been contacted by the town regarding the psiity of the town evligoff the space at' the rear of the building and renting it for use as a public parking lot, but the firm had demanded too much rent for the property. S od Turning for Chemical Plant, During a telephone conversation Wednes- day noon with Norman E. Sweet, Oshawa, President of N.E. Sweet Co. Ltd., Bowmanville's new industry, The Statesman learned that a sod-turning ceremony for the new plant is planned for Nov. 21st, weather permitting. Mr. Sweet stated that the new factory, with between 7,000 and 10,000 square feet of floor space, will be constructed by Allan Potter, an Oshawa Pa per Company which ha been -approached and had asked excessive rent. ,His Worship pointed out that he had looked up correspondence on, the matter and found that negotiations had taken place in 1949 before the Specialty Paper Company took over the building. Mr. F. Derbyshire had been in control of the building at that time, and it was with him that the matter has been discussed. Reeve Sidney Little reported that Ewart Marston, engineer in this district for the past several years for the Department of High- ways, has been trans- ferred to the Toronto district and will be leaving shortly. A fare- well dinner is being held in Cobourg for Mr. Marston, and Reeve Little f elt that the town should contribute a nominal sum toward the cost of this dinner. He was authorized by council to contribute an amount equal to contri- butions made by Port Hope and Cobourg. "I6 arn very sorry to see Mr. Marston leave this district", Mayor Vanstone declared. "He has been a real friend of Bowmanvîlle and the other municipalities in this district, and has given very valuable advice to our roads and streets committees". To Lower Flag Daily Coun. Wilfrid Carruthers stated that several citizens had mentioned that the flag on the Town Hall should be raised each morning and lowered at night. He pointed out that the caretaker must climb a trap door in the attic of the Town Hall to do this, and perhaps a flag pole should be erected in the park by the Town Hall so it would be more easily accessible. Mayor Vanstone felt that since the Town Hall is a public building the flagpole should be kept on it. Coun. Carruthers stated that he would try to fix the trap door into the attic so it would be easier for the caretaker to raise and lower the flag each day. powdered detergents.
