The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 3, 1979 9 Frank's Win 4th Straight Titie Downing Kramp's Charlie Hastings of Bowmanville reeled in this monster on Lake Ontario last week. The salmon weighed in at 18.28 pounds and was caught about three miles out from Bronte on Thursday, September 27. The fish was to have an appointment with the taxidermist and has also been entered in the Toronto Star Great Salmon Hunt. Mr. Hastings was fishing in a boat owned by a friend, Steve Slugg, from Whitby. Mr. Slugg landed a 14.24 pound salmon and Mr. Hastings caught a second, 13.77 pounder. Uxbridge Goalie Foils Eagle Attacker In Sunday's hockey game at Memorial Arena, the Jr. C Cowan Red Eagles showed considerable promise as they came from behind to squeeze a 6-5 win over Uxbridge. This photo, taken during the second period when the Eagles weren't doing so well, shows a near miss and a good stop by the Uxbridge goalie on a close in shot. Cowen's E agles WMin ad Lose ln Pre-season Exibition Tilts by Don Wilcox Bowmanville Junior C Red Eagles, sponsored by Cowan Pontiac-Buick, were in action over the weekend, playing a home and home exhibition series with Uxbridge Dominion Autos, both teams winning at home. The Eagles have several new faces making a serious bid to fill the numerous open positions and arranged four pre-season tilts which will give Coach Paul Robinson and Manager Buck Janack an opportunity to observe and assess the players under game conditions. Returning from last season's championship team are Don Farrow, Brad Godfrey, Jerry Leddy, Jerry Johnson, Tom Dwyer and Mike Adams. These experienced players will definitely add a stabilizing effect to the team which will have several rookies in the lineup. Hockey is a game where a player must take charge of the situation, be aggressive and make split second decisions, have self control and discipline, and co-operate by playing as a team to develop a system. There is quite an adjustment from minor hockey to junior where the tempo is much faster and the play much more aggressive. Three of the rookie prospects who have just graduated from midget ranks are Chuck Welsh, Brent Clemens and Stan Greenham, each turning in a strong effort over the weekend and earning special mention. Trying out for the goaler positions are four local boys, Jevin Gibson, Peter Leger, Tim Vanstone and Brook Cole. The Red Eagles should be able to ice three well balariced forward lines. The area that still has a few question marks is the defence, a position that can be filled by game experience only. Rick Bain, who bas all the tools to do the job on defence, especially his puck handling skills, could help to strengthen the blueline crew. Lose Opener 10-7 In the opening exhibition game on Friday, the Eagles were defeated 10-7 in. Uxbridge in a loosely played game with very little emphasis put on defensive play as indicated b.y the 17 goals scored. Red Eagle scorers were Don Farrowe from Terry Riggers, Brent Clemens unassisted, Carl Chambers .from Don Farrow .and Terry Riggers, Brent Clements from Chuck Welsh, and Randy McDonald, Chuck Welsh from Brent Clemens and Mark Berney, Brent Clemens from Chuck Welsh and Stan Greenham, Chuck Welsh from Kevin Noble. The Eagles goaltending was shared by Peter Leger and Brook Cole. Win First Home Game In the first home game of the season on Sunday, the Eagles came out on top by a close 6-5 count. The several fans who turned out to sec the game which was put together on short notice, saw the Eagles jump into an early lead, then get into trouble with their long, lateral passes which were intercepted by alert Uxbridge attackers, with Eagles dropping behind by a 5-3 count after two periods, then scoring three unanswer- ed goals in the third period for the win. The scoring was started by veteran Don Farrow, a rising slapper from the faceoff, unassisted. Brad Godfrey gave Eagles a two goal lead on a rising wrist shot after Jerry Leddy dug the puck out of the corner. Uxbridge's little speedster Mike Rodrigues beat Kevin Gibson on a hard, rising slapper, a two on one break. Eagles' third goal was well executed by Ed Visser who set up the screen after Greg Brunt won the draw, setting up Chris Marchant for his goal which came on a well aired wrist shot. Eagles' goalie made an alert save on a giveaway in the Eagle zone. Peter Arts scored for Uxbridge, both teams a man short. Mike Rodrigues scored, intercepting a lateral for a breakaway goal. The second period scorers were Rick Robertson who beat goalie Tim Vanstone who came in cold, on his first shot. Henry Vernoy gave Uxbridge a two goal- lead getting the Arga bounce on a loose puck. Red Eagles came to play in the third period on goals by Greg Brunt on a short pass from Ed Visser, a power play effort. Tim Vanstone made a clutch save on Vernoy and as it happens so often, Eagles got the tying goal on the next faceoff won by Brent Clemens that set up Chuck Welsh's tying goal. Brad Godfrey got the game winner with Welsh distracting the Uxbridge goalie. Also assiting was Rick Bain who broke down ice with the puck. Kramp's also took advantage of six errors by Frank's to score five unearned runs and extend the series to seven games. Paul Forsey gave Frank's a shortlived 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with his second homer of the playoffs, a solo shot over the left field fence off Dennis Bickle who scattered 12 hits in the game. Kramp tied the score in the bottom of the first when he singled, advanced on Brian Cooke's hit and scored on an error. Dennis Caruana's double, Kramp's RBI single and another Frank's error gave Kramp's a 3-1 second inning lead off Bill Cochrane before Forsey drilled his second homer of the game to close Kramp's lead to 3-2 in the top of the third inning. Kramp's then erupted for five runs in the bottom of the scoring offensive affair with both teams using explosive lineups which produced 89 runs and 145 hits in the seven games. Frank's eventually outscored (47-42) and out hit (80-65) Kramp's in a series highlighted by errors, plenty of bad bounces and at times, lucky and unlucky plays by both teams. The best game of the series was a well played 2-1 eight inning opening game win by Frank's. f Batting AB R 32 9 18 5 28 5 36 il 38 10 33 10 33 5 28 8 41 9 37 il 30 5 AVG .563 .556 .500 .472 .395 .394 .364 .357 .341 .324 .300 third for a commanding 8-2 lead, when Ed Ryhorchuk drew a one out walk, Norm Lansing double with two out and Joe Caruana drilled a three run homer over the centerfield fence. Frank's staged a mild rally when they scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings to narrow Kramp's lead to 8-6. In the fifth Paul Forsey walked and scored on a triple by Don Forsey who later scored on a single by Cochrane. Joe Humeniuk led off Frank's sixth with a single and eventually scored on a Rick Woolner single. Woolner scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Cascagnette. Kramp's clinched the win in the sixth with a pair of runs off reliever Terry Baker. Two errors and a single loaded the bases and Baker walked Kim Rasmussen to force in a run. Norm Lansing followed with a sacrifice fly to score the final run of the game. Bill Cochrane scattered nine hits and retired the last seven men in the game for his seventh playoff win and 24th of the season, a league record. Kramp's finished a dismal fourth during the regular schedule but erupted in the playoffs to eliminate Port Darlington Marina and extend Frank's to the limit. They played well during the last half of the season and deserve fuih credit for their efforts. Doug Kramp staked Kràmp's to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when he led off with his second homer in as many games. Frank's took the lead for good in the bottom of the second when Don and Paul Forsey singled. Terry Baker doubled to plate Don Forsey and Humeniuk singled to score Paul Forsey and Baker and give Frank's a 3-1 lead. Dennis Caruana scored on a single by Ken Ferris in the top of the third to narrow the score to 3-2 but Frank's increased their lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third when Rick Woolner singled and scored on Don Forsey's home 7un which went over the fence in left. Norm Lansing almost caught the ball as it cleared the fence but was injured on the play and had to leave the game. Ed Rhyorchuk drew a one out walk in the fourth and scored on a double by John Colwell to narrow Frank's lead to 5-3. Colwell was nailed at third on an excellent throw by Paul Forsey from left field. Frank's went ahead 7-3 in the fourth on a lead off triple by Humeniuk, a sacrifice fly by Don Lorusso, Rick Woolner's second single of the game and a line drive triple by Steve Burns. Yvon Michaud relieved Bickle after the triple by Burns and held Frank's hitless for the rest of the game. Kramp's scored their final run of the game in the top of the fifth and had Cochrane in trouble for the first time in the game. Brian Cooke, Ken Ferris and Dennis Bickle hit consecutive two out singles with Cooke scoring on Bickle's hit. Ferris and Bickle advanced to second and third on a passed ball and Ed Ryhorchuk hit what appeared to be a single to score two runs. The runs were disallow- ed and Bickle and Ferris returned to their bases when the umpire ruled Ryhorchuk's hit had struck him while he was in the batters box. Cochrane came back to fan Ryhorchuk and retire Kramp's in order in the last two innings for the win.
