Parents, babysitters, or anyone responsible for the care of a child should remove the child from the bathtub whenever they must leave the room to answer the phone, see who 15 at the door or attend to any other business. This, simple action of moving the child from the hazard will prevent extremely serlous buras and may prevent the death of -the child. Why take a chance? Keep the children away from the hot water and prevent a serlous bura. Instruct older children in the safe use of-showers and hot water and be sure no young child is ever left unattended la the bathtub. - from the Fire Prevention Canada Association. 900 Children Fire Victims Over 5 Years During the five year period ending in 1976 over 900 children under 15 years of age died in accidents as the result of fires ln Canada, tragic losses indeed. Many of these deaths occurred as the resuit of carelessness, lack of super- vision or simply lack of knowledge; most of these deaths could have been avert- ed. In the United States of the in, excess of 8,500 people who die annually in fire, from injuries- related to fires and accidents causing burns, the majority of the victims are children. More children die because of accidents than to ail the childhood communicable dîseases combined. The safety advice contained in this pamphlet is aimed at reducing many of the fire-bura related accidents that strikepeople. Recent studies have demon- strated that the greatest cause of buras lan ail segments of the population is contact with hot iiquids - scalds. The'high risk populations are children under 5 and persons over 65. Many of these burn injuries are less serous than flame buras or other bura causes and the injured person may not be hospitalîzed. However since scalds are so common and since the potential of very serious injury is ever pres 1ent, it is very important to present information that will help reduce this problem. The idea that a person can receive a serious burn injury without a flame being involved may be a new concept to many. Ia spite of cosmetic surgery, badly burat children carry the scars through adulthood... scars that constantly remind parents and guardians that the accident could have been prevented. Make it your priority to deal with the reduction, control and elimination of the factors that contribute to high risk situa- tions and associated fires and burns. Leara NOW what you can do to prevent buras. Hot Liquids The greatest single cause of buras is a hot liquid. Such buras occur most frequently in the kitchan and bathroom and the most commonly injured ,peison is a child. Toddlers and preschool children are most frequently the victims of scald buras with a large number of these buras resulting from a lack of supervision. A pot or pan on the stove is a temptation to a child. They may reach up and pull to pot of boiling liquid or the pan of cookîng food on themselves. Always make sure that ail pot and pan handies are turned inwards on the stove, away from the reach of children. Eighty percent of buras received by children two years of age and under are the resuit of coffee or tea being spilled from the hands of parents. A tablecloth hanglng over the side of a table can result in buras or scalds. A child's temptation may lead hlm to grab it pulling along with it a po fseaming tea or some other hot iuid or food.We Young childiren are prýesent, tablecloths that hang over the sides of tables or any other piece of furniture should neyer be used.
