10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October lot 1979 Section Two Propose Parking By-law For Cabs The. municipality 15 considering preparing a by-law which would prohibit taxi cabs from parking while waiting for hire on streets within the town. In a report to the finance and administration committee on Oct. lst,. By-law Enforce- ment uxicer Larry Simpson explained that the old parking by-law had provisions to prevent cabs from parking on highways while waitîng for hire. "cUnfortunately this depart- ment is again experiencing some complaints regarding taxi cabs being left parked at parking meters in the down- town area," Mr. Simpson said in a report. .He asked the finance and administration committee to consider a by-law which would deal with the problem. The suggested by-law would allow cabs to park at stands which would be authorized by the municipality and marked by a sign. The finance and administra- tion committee agreed to consider this type of by-law. Compensation Sought for Leskard Road Newcastle's public works committee, is recommendîng to Council that part of the cost of resurfacing the Leskard Road be paid by Ontario Hydro. At its regular meeting in Hampton on Oct. 2nd the works committee passed a resolution recommending that staff negotiate the q uestion of compensation with Ontario Hydro and report back to the public works committee. Newcastle Works Director Jack Dunhamn said in a report to the committee that between 1977 and 1978 a resurfacing program took place on Leskard Rd. During 1977, Leskard Road from Taunton to the Seventh Concession was resurfaced at a cost of $23,373. The following year, the cost of resurfacing from the Seventh Concession to Leskard was $24,857.16. In both cases, extra costs were incurred for shouldering. The works director estimated that the total expenditure for 1977-78 was $51,966.66. "During recent inspections of Leskard Road it was found that due to heavy traffic. some deficiencies are in evidence. It is my opinion' that further restoration and resurfacing will be required in' 198Ù", Mr. Dunhamn added in1 his, written report. Mr. Dunham went on! to say that during 1977- 78, Ontario Hydro generated 35 per cent of the business with Salco cen t onacti The ommitee recom- mended to council that a plumber be hired to carry out the repairs necessary at the Police and Fire Building. In a report on this topic, Town Manager Albert Guiler said the problem seems to be a broken pipe or pipe blockage about five feet inside the large doors at the front of the fire hall. "After heavy use and on court days the sewer at the Fire Hall Police Station becomes plugged and backs up causing flooding of the floor in the storage area at the rear of the building," Mr. Guiler said in a report. The Town Manager estimated, that the cost of repairs could be $400 to $800. w ol 10ç Mos Et *. tc.
