4 The Canadian Statesman. Bownr Council Briefs Newcastle Council believes residents should be able to phone their local hospital no matter where they live in the municipality. As a resuit, elected representatives voted Monday to request that the Board for Memorial Hospital, Bowman- ville consider installing a Zenith number for Orono and Newtonville ao that these places could phone the hospital without long distance charges. Counillor Maurice Prout said he believes the Zenith numbers will be discussed by the Hospital Board at a meeting November 28. Newcastle Counillor Ann Cowman said the town was showing poor taste in its choice of a street name for the Courticearea. She was commenting ona suggestion that a street proposed by D R Agencies be named Windsor Valley Place. Counillor Cowman suggested that Farewell Valley Place would be a better namfe because the property is close to -the Farewell Creek. She added that the iname Windsor Valley Place is "tacky". "IL just doesn't sound right." The remainder of council disagreed. Counillor Hobbs suggested that in the last few years there have been attempts to make sure that street names are flot duplicated in the Durham Region. Since there is already a Farewell St. in Oshawa, the same name would not be appropriate in Courice, lie said. Counillor Çowman's amendment to change the naine to Farewell Valley Place was rejected and the name Windsor Valley Place will be forwarded to te Durham Rtegion for iLs consideration and approval. A cottage located on West Beach in Bowmanville will fal under the wrecker's hammer as a result of a decision from Town Council Monday. Council agreed to remove the cottage located on lot 35 because the municipality's fire chief lias declared iL Lo be a fire liazard. The building was obtained by the Town of Newcastle for failure to pay taxes and has been abandoned. The strict enfor cement of hree-hour parking_ regulations may -be a mixed blessing, according Lo members of Newcastle Council. Counillors Hobbs and Prout both said Monday that. they have heard from persons praising council for enforcing the parking rules governing cars left on streets overmight. In addition, councillors have also heard from persons complaining about cars which were ticketed for overnight parking. Counil decided to proceed with a review of parking regulations in 1 the municipality and report on what action may be taken. A spécial committee has been set up to review te parking prolIems. "l'n sure there's Lwo sides Lo the story and Llia's what the review would bring out," said Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rîckard. Newcastle Council bas agreed to delay the Equalization factors affecting te amount of taxes the Town pays the School Board will be a topic on Newcastle's finance and administration committee agenda. All members of council have been invited Lo attend this meeting in order to discuss the extent of inequities in taxes paid by the Town of Newcastle for education. The scitool board said in a recent resolution that "the law of assessment equalization factors is considered to have created an inequitable apportionment of local levy in the Town of Newcastle." The purpose of the school board's representatives meeting with the Town of Newcastle is to find out the details of this "inequity". nanville.
