Frateoranal Groups Get Toge ther For First "Brotherhood Night" Bowmanville's very first "brotherhood night" brought together representatives of ail five fraternal organizations in the town. And the evening proved to be so successful that there is talk of holding a similar meeting again next year. Head table guests shown in this photo include: Dan Murphy, Knights of Columbus; Garnet Rickard, Mayor of Newcastle; Ted Alldread, Foresters; Ernie Archer, Oddfellows; Rick Santamero, K of C; Dean Grills,, Orange Lodge;ý Gerald Vandezande, guest speaker; John Manuel, Masons: and Rev. Frank Mihelic. K of C. Gerald, Vandezande, of the Committee for Justice 'and Liberty, talks to the audience about "Brotherhood in Daily Practice. " Photo of the audience shows that the event was well-attended by over 100 representatives of fraternal organizations. Brotberhood is alive and well and living in Bowmanville. This seemed t o be the general feeling last Tuesday nigbt as over 100 members of Bowmýanville's five fraternities combined for a unique event. St. Josep's cburch hall was the site of wbat organizers hope to be an annual event -- a Brotberbood Nigbt involving the Knigbts of Columibus, Masonic Lodge, Foresters, Odd Fellows and Orange 11 Lodge. Complimentary invitations were also extended to clergy from every cburcb in Bowmanville. After a successful social hour, the Catbolîc Women's League served a delîcious beef dinner and a variety of pieb. A few words of introduction from Rick Santamero, Grand Knigbt of the Knigbts of Columbus, recounted how on a summer afternoon walk, he and John Manuel, Master of Jerusalem Lodge began the first of several talks wbicb soon developed into full scale plans for this annual evening witb representatives from each fraternity working together on the plans. Mayor Garnet Rickard in bis short address of welcome, expressed bis pleasure that the evening was so well attended, and applauded the efforts of the groups involved. Guest speaker for the evening, Gerald Vandezande, spoke on 5 the subject "Brotherbood in Daily Practice", challenging those present to carry their beliefs in brotberly love into every corner of their lives. Too often, be said, brotherhood is forgotten in the workplace. We sbould be.an example, he said, of brotherbood in action. An evening of euchre, crîbbage and general fraternity kept the members circulating and making new friends until nearly midnigbt. Next year? Well, many seemed already to be looking forward to it -- and from al reports, tickets may be even harder to find. The mileage policy covers employees of the board not covered by a collective agreement. New rates go into effect December 1.
