Wins Western Area Volleyball Tournament You're looking at the prize-winning boys' team from a volleyball tournament held last Thursday, December 13 at Bowmanville High School. The tournament included teams from senior public schools in the western area of the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education. Board to Consider Program Planned for "Latch Key" Children By Peter Parrott Trustees believe that a new program aimed at taking care of the children of working parents may have some merit. But they are recommending that the program, which is proposed for a school in Bowmanville, be referred to a board committee for further study. At a meeting of the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education in Cobourg last Thursday, a group from Newcastle called HUG (Help Us Grow) requested that school facilities be used in a pilot program for "latch key children." Under the program, youngsters whose parents are working outside the home would be supervised by a qualified person within school facilities outside of regular schoolhours. A charge per child to be paid by parents would be the suggested way to finance the project. However Elaine Barber, of the HUG committee asked in a letter to the school board that facilities at , schools be provided at no charge or at a minimal cost. "As taxpayers, we see the use of the school facilities, for which we are, already paying, as a sensible plan. For instance, large pieces of playground and gym equipment, which involve considerable Investment, would have a double purpose," said Mrs. Barber. She' added that her group hopes to get the program started after the Christmas holidays.. She suggested that the project could operate out of Volleyball action in the western area tournament held last Thursday, December 13 at Bowmanville High School. Swine Workers Course Offered A "Swine and Farm Worker" program, the first in Eastern Ontario, has been scheduled for January 21, 1980, at the Kemptville College of Agricultural Technology. Established in co-operation with the Canada Employment Commission, the course will run for twelve weeks and have openings for twenty people. Doug Green of Athens, Leeds County, has been hired as co-ordinator. Last winter a committee of producers met at the College with Swine Specialist Jim Dalrymple who later drafted a questionnaire to determine producers' needs. Most respondents thought trained people were needed to work on Eastern Ontario swine farms. Three-quarters indicated they would hire either part-time or full-time people over the next five years. As a result, a swine advisory committee was established consisting of swine producers and government officials. Andy Armstrong, a Smith Falls hog producer, was elected chairman. The course is expected to be similar to the existing Dairy Herdworkers course. Four weeks will be spent in the classrooms and eight weeks on swine farms. e 1
