Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Garrod Jr., her sister Mrs. Jill Christie and her mother, Mrs. Raye Friedlander returned last week from a sun-filled vacation in Rio de Janeiro where they visited Mr. and Mrs. Gregorio Friedlander, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary during that time. Miss Charlotte Haldenby is home, from the University of Alabama, enjoying the Christmas vacation with her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Allan IHaldenby. Mr. and Mrs. Jon Bennett, Peterborough were Sunday visitors with his grandmother, Mrs. Nellie Spencer. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bennett, Omemee, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wilkin and Mrs. Bennett, Sr., Scarborough, were Sunday guests of.Mrs. Nellie Spencer and all enjoyed dinner out. Mrs. Lena Graham, Mrs. Lena Clysdale, Newtonville and Mrs. Kathleen Kimball visited last week with Mrs. Gladys Walkey, Bowmanville. Mr. and Mrs. Vance Cooper, Oshawa, were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Kathleen Kimball and all visited with the Jack Kimball's, Port Granby. Mrs. Elizabeth Skelding has returned home after spending some time with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Skelding, Port Perry. We are glad to report that Nancy is progressing favorably since her eye surgery. The Newcastle Lions enjoy- ed their Christmas party on Saturday night. Mrs. Kathleen Kimball accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stapleton, Orono, to Port Hope on Saturday even- ing to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Gordon. Mr. and Mrs. Don Murdoch, Kars, were Wednesday over- night guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wade. Mrs. Bessie Dean and Mrs. Gladys Wood were among the Newcastle friends who attend- ed the 25th wedding anniversary reception in honor of Mr. and Mrs. James Caswell at Newtonville Com- munity Hall on Saturday evening. We extend congratu- lations to Marjorie and Jim. Mr. and Mrs. Doug Wood and boys, Pontypool, were Sunday afternoon visitors with Mrs. Gladys Wood. Mr. Willie Woo and his fiancee, Kathy Spencer, had a wonderful evening Friday at a wine and cheese party given by her aunt and uncle, Bill and Lockhart's Public School Presents Christmas Concert At Lockhart's Public School last Wednesday evening, the auditorium was packed for their annual Christmas concert. They were welcomed by Kelly Burdett and presented with colorful programs designed by Lesle Gibson, Rhonda Morton and Doris Gaudet. Music consultant Doug Dewell provided the piano accompaniment for the many Christmas songs and special skits. This one shows some of the students from Grades 2 and 3 performing 'A Visit to Christmas Past', under direction of Mrs. McBride. Marie Berrill, Oshawa. On Saturday evening, the happy couple had an exceptionally fine time at the staff party for Medical Science Laboratories' employees. Mrs. Gladys McKay, Bronte, was a Sunday visitor with Mr. and Mrs. Robin Alldred. Mr. Win Collier is a patient in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. Sunday dinner guests with Mrs. Gladys Pacey and family were Mr. and Mrs. John Pacey and three grand- children, Mrs. Marlene French and son David and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Kraft, all of Peterborough. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Naylor and family, Kingston, were weekend visitors with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Naylor. Students and staff of Lockhart • School presented their annual Christmas Con- cert last Wednesday. December 12. After the wel- come by Kelly Burdett, the primary choir under the leadership of Mrs. Preston sang In the Starlight, Friendly Beasts and Deck the Halls. Miss Dorland's Grade 1 and 2 class presented the Fir Tree, with the Primary Choir sing- ing, O Christmas Tree, Grades 2 and 3, who are taught by Mrs. McBride presented A Visit to Christmas Past, after which there was a PTA presentation. Mr. Eames' Grade 4 and 5 class enacted Old Ghost for a New Story. Grade Five under the guidance of Vice-Principal James Dupuis and assistant Mrs. Hilborn did Class Christmas Carol and Garde 6, Christmas Concert under Mrs. Hilborn's direction, the Junior Choir sang So My Sheep May Safely Graze, In a Manger, Do You Hear What I Hear? and Christmas Bells. Special thanks was expressed to Mr. Douglas Dewell, Music Consultant and no Christmas Concert is complete until Santa Claus arrives - which he did! Senior Citizens' Christmas Party On Thursday evening, December 13, about eighty senior citizens enjoyed turkey dinner, with all the trimmings, served by the ladies of the Anglican Church Women at St. George's Parish Hall. President Queenie Fletcher welcomed all and read a Christmas poem, Rev. Allan Haldenby said grace. Mrs. Joyce Ritchie of the ACW introduced all her helpers, who were thanked and given a hearty round of applause. Af ter the dinner, the Senior Citizens went to the Newcastle Community Hall where they were entertained by a musical group of four men and one lady, with Master of Cere- monies, Mr. Jim Coyle, Bowmanville. Carol singing led by Florence Cryderman and accompanied by pianist, Rev. Thomas Smith, was enjoyed. Mr. Lloyd Stephen- son gave a recitation. At the end of the programme, Mrs. Helen Nesbitt, thanked the musicians. Mr. Howard Cryderman and Pearl Leach performed the task of Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus for the gift exchange. Cookies and tea were served at the conclusion of this happy event. Owner of the Kut 'N' Kurl Beauty Salon, Violet Cook, was awarded a citation of appreciation from the Bowmanville Kinette Club last Thursday. Vi and her staff recently provided the program for a special Kinette meeting where they demonstrated the total look of beauty for the audience. Several ladies received a hair cut and style and others were treated to a complementary make-up application. Commentating the program, Vi attempted to communicate how to achieve the total look. Kut 'N' Kurl also made a donation to Cystic Fibrosis which is an ongoing Kinette Club service project. Anglican Church News The ministry of the church is a very wide field and Rev. Haldenby spoke on one aspect of it at the services on Sunday. December 16. The third Sunday in Advent emphasizes the ministry in relation to the coming of Jesus Christ. United Church News On Sunday, December 16th at Newcastle United Church, two poinsettias gracing the sanctuary were placed by the UCW in memory of members of the congregation who passed away in 1979 and one poinsettia was placed by the family of Mrs. Gladys Brown in her memory. The choir rendered a beautiful anthem. New hymn books in memory of Gladys Brown, donated by her family, were dedicated by Rev. David Spivey. The kindergarten class repeated their Christmas Concert number, Praising Baby Jesus on all their musical instru- ments and led by Debbie Pruner. Set Firmly In Time, the sermon preached by Rev. Spivey emphasized that Christian faith is a long and traditional faith. Robbie Rowe lit the third Advent candle. The prayer for the week is: Lord Christ, coming into the heart of our lives, break afresh into the confusion and disorder at the centre of my life and create there your peace. Lay hold on me that I may be transformed into your likeness, and filled with your spirit. Amen. No more tadpoles meeting until January 3rd. Pageant rehearsal, choir practice and village carol singing are held on Thursday night, December 20. Next Sunday the Christmas Pageant will be presented and a short service will be held on Christmas Eve at 7:30 p.m. U.C.W. General Meeting On Monday, December 10, at the United Church Sunday School Hall, the U.C.W. General Meeting was held with about thirty members present. Mrs. Marie Pedwell was pianist for the evening. President Kathleen Powell conducted the meeting. Mrs. Marion Allin read the minutes. Treasurer Jean Holmes gave her report. Mrs. Bessie Dean reported on the correspondence of the year. Discussion of drapes for the Sunday School Hall and other business matters were discussed. Mrs. Marilyn Martin installed the 1980 executive members. Ron Motum and seven young people of the Christians in Action, in interdenomina- tional group, meeting at Northminster, Oshawa. once weekly, presented the programme. New songs, games and skits were enjoyed. Fellowship and a social time followed the programme, when Mrs. Erla Jose, Vicki Lesnick, Marie Pedwell and Pearl Noble served tea and tasty lunch.
