Orillia School Board 1 at a recent /meeting increased the teachers' salaries all round $50 each, making & (total raise of $1,250. Regina public school teachers have been ordered to obey regulations regulations and open school daily with the Lord's Prayer. the public school is the place for a preparation for life morals and patriotic duties should hold' a prominent prominent place in a teacher's thought and duty. The office, of the school teacher is. very responsible and onerous, and should command ae 'high salary- as most . positions in commercial and industrial life,. but teachers are not paid salaries a.t all comparable. The rising generation, dépends largely on teachers for guidance and knowledge, so that the children's children's future is shaped largely by them. small in many dseofcions'5 tiiat " teachers teachers are teaching four to teir pupils in many schools* Oonsolidatioh seems the most feasible scheme. What aide to advancement teachers teachers have in this practical age. Summer courses iarei. arranged, helpful courses in nature-study, physical training,; music, entrance td •" Faculty, etc., have been provided provided by the Department of Education, Education, . and annually do^zen# of teachers are availing themselves of "these excellent ..-opportunities ? for advancement in ' their" profession'. The Department, is also: supplying very helpful manuals in various school subjects. the work which might be done by- the staff. Then- comes a medical staff of 20 doctors with 40 trained nurses. In these schools, an authority authority tells us, a goodly period is Spent every morning in reckoning the ^percentage of those who pass muster on clean heads, hands ahd faces, hair combed, teeth carefully brushed, naile^jppoperly manicured, etc. The clothing worn by thé children is also passed upon in the scrutiny. Thé free life of the school boy and' girl is - fast becoming becoming a misnomer. ' Ontario teachers shall give instruction instruction in moral principles and practices from current incidents, literature, history, etc., and by her own example and precepts. The best school teacher must be more or less of a student of psychology psychology and must be able to distinguish distinguish between really "bad boys" fcnd thoughtless ones. Matthew Arnold said "Conduct Lb three-fourths of life," then if The teachers' profession ranks with the greatest in importance and influence, and it will be well for them to view the past 50 years in the light of its present status, then they will be encouraged to persevere persevere for better ■* oonddtione for teachers and scholars are coming fast. It is surprising bow many changes take place in rural schools every year. For example, last midsummer in one inspectorate of 70. rural public school teachers 44 changed (schools and only 26 were re-engaged by the osurrie boards. This is a very regrettable condition, condition, as frequent changes are not in the best interest of the scholars. The three R'e are almost crowded crowded out by the crowded condition of the public school curriculum. Fade, frills and fancies may be all right in moderation--they. possess certain certain educational and/ aesthetic value --but surely the essentials should be fully mastered, and not crowded out by less important subjects. A nation's strength and stability depends not upon its territory, Fifteen years ago teachers were chasing each other and bargain-day salaries obtained, for, unfortunately, unfortunately, rural trustees favored the cheap teacher, and it almost caused a heartbreak to pay $500 a year. Today Today salariée are up to 50 per cent, higher and a teacher may now dress as well as others and even go on a holiday trip. This is truly, the teacher's century. In the whirligig of time we may expect to see many more changes in rural schools. The centralization idea is gaining advocates as the population decreases and consolidation consolidation schools in rural communities communities may be nearer than many expect. expect. Attendance is getting so How large place military drill, rifle shooting and oadet work now have in the time-table of some schools. .They have their place as aids to good' discipline, a graceful manner, a well-trained eye an<l a -steady hand-, but is there not a danger of magnifying the military spirit, which -is at variance with the peace spirit of our age ? Better Better by far imbue the minds of the boys with thé 'Spirit of peace, a conciliatory Spirit, a plan of arbitration, arbitration, -by which great international international disputes may be settled, rather rather than -by letting loose "merciless "merciless dogs of war." City public schools -have now been brought under an entirely new order of government, inspection and curriculum-. The machinery has been increased beyond all former former conception. Principals teach only half time or 'less, and engage in office work the other half, and an assistant teaches the other half and performs office work to fill in the school day. Local option has been an ption has been an unqualified success in Bowmanville ever since it came into force in May 1909. If the village of Newcastle on the east and town of Osha- wa on the west only, had local option too this town would be a paradise. Speaking for the town Itself Mr. Richard Jarvis, Chief of Police, tells us that the Act could not work better. When it is considered that the town never had so many foreigners foreigners and navvies working here as during the past two years, during the construction construction work on The Toronto and Eastern Electric Railway, The Canadian Pacific Railway, the corporation waterworks and sewage systems and the Seymour Light and Power lines, and no disturbance c-r drunken brawls, no evidence of the evil effects of the use of Intoxicating liquors among those men having come to our notice the record is almost beyond belief in the light of what has taken place In other towns under the license system. Mr. William M. Horsey, Police Magistrate, Magistrate, has furnished us with this record of his Court : Since the local option by-law was passed by the inhabitants of the Municipality Municipality of the Town of Bowmanyille and came into force May 1909, there have been 71 prosecutions and convictions in the Police Court in Bowmanyille of Individuals Individuals for being found intoxicated and for violations under the Liquor License Act and Fines and Costs to the amount of $1342.81, imposed by the Police Magistrate Magistrate for such violations. During that time only one case occurred in the town of Bowmanville for selling and keeping liquor for sale for which a fine and costs of $182.00 was imposed. One case also occurred in the Township of Clarke for selling and keeping for .sale for which a fine and costs of $232.95 was imposed by the Magistrate, Clarke being also a local option municipality. In the prosecutions it was adduced in evidence in 70 of the 71 cases that the liquor was obtained OUTSIDE OF THE TOWN OF BOWMANVILLE. If this report of Police Magistrate Horsey Horsey is not one over which to feel proud in our beautiful and progressive town what would justify it? Yes, local option is proving a splend d blessing in Bowmanville. Bowmanville. BOUQUET FOR THE EDITOR. Popular Toronto Divine Congratulations. Sends It may be remembered that last week we published a paragraph about a weekly 'song and story recital" the senior editor attended in Toronto the previous Friday evening. The notice pleased the pastor, Rev. Byron H.
