When she hums or sings at play she is merely expressing this natural natural gift--her talent. All children have this gift for music. Sometimes parents develop it. Often thëy starve it. Oftener still, they spoil if--spoil it with a poor piano -- a piano "good enough to practise on." The untrue tones of a cheap piano spoil the ear. The delicate brain cells which register sound, pick, up the habit of untrue sound--a habit which they cannot unlearn. You know how a singer with a "poor ear" sings off the key and nevér knows it. Yet from a good piano the ear will just as readily pick up true sound habits--habits which mean refinement and taste, Develop your child's natural gift. Few remain of the old residents of this town and each year marks the passing away of the oldest men and women who have long passed the alloted span of the years of man. Friday morning there passed passed to his eternal rest one of our most aged and respected residents in the person of Mr. Richard Brimacombe who had he lived until next month would have completed completed 94 years --an age to which few attain. attain. Deceased was born in Steward, Portgate, Devon, England, on Jan. 21, 1820. On January 28, 1857, he was married married to Thomazine Penwarden Brimacombe, Brimacombe, and came to Canada with his wife and family in 1880 arriving at Bowmanville Bowmanville on Dec. 10 where he has lived continuously. continuously. He was converted whep sixteen sixteen years old and was superintendent of Dowincary chapel Sunday School for fifteen years before coming to this country. country. For a number of years he has been seriously afflicted with rheumatism and deafness but a more cheerful and bright disposition it would be hard to find. Industrious Industrious in whatever he could undertake he was an example that was worthy of imitation. Altho unable thro affliction to attend the house of God regularly for some years his faith never failed and his word and smile was a benediction to all whom he met. The funeral Sunday afternoon afternoon from his late residence, Elgin-st., was largely attended, service being conducted conducted by his pastor, Rev. H. B. Kenny, who paid a very kindly and worthy tribute to the life of a man in every sense a good citizen and a Christian. The pallbearers pallbearers were Messrs Fred Brimacombe (son), Mr. Fred Brimacombe (nephew), Mr. Rd. Snowden (son-in-law), and Mr. Fred R. Foley (nephew). The floral offerings offerings from several sympathizing friends were very beautiful. He leaves an aged widow, four daughters--Misses Hessie, Laura and Mary Brimacombe and (Millie) Mrs. Rd. Snowden; one son, Mr. Fred Brimacombe, Toronto, to mourn the loss of a faithful husband and father. Read this carefully and then cone early FRIDAY and SATURDAY, Dec. 5th, 6th m % ss I {From our own correspondent.) I have just come in from a perfect evening. evening. Jean Blewett was delightful. Mrs. J. H. Renwick, formerly of Port Hope, and Gwyn accompanied me. The large assembly room was well filled. Principal Walker of the Normal School introduced Mrs. Blewett in a happy way. She was gowned in a very pale pink satin with overdress of some gauzy material with trimmings of velvet and dark fur and low" neck. She looked younger than when J last met her at Mrs. Galbraith's in Bowmanville. Bowmanville. At the close she greeted ns very graciously and reference was made ::o her visit in the Rubber Town. / Mrs. Blewett's subject in addressing the Normalités was "The Women Writers of Canada." She explained that Canada has no literature. She spoke of women in the srofessions and told of the first woman to ie admittedas a student to a Canadian University. She was thought to be bold and forward then and when she went to :he head man of the university to ask him when she could be admitted the professor said: "Never, never in my time,JI hope." That woman persisted, finally secured admission, admission, took the course and graduated and is now on the Senate of Toronto University. University. (Was it not Dr. Augusta Stowe Gullen ?) This interesting lady spoke of different professions to which women have secured entrance since, of the nobility of labor, and emphasized especially the nobility of eaching the children of this land and fitting fitting them to become useful and worthy citizens of this great Canada of ours. What nobler service than to direct and instruct those who are to fill the places of the present generation by assisting them to prepare for their life work and for the best enjoyment of life themselves ? Many women are giving their youth and energy in this important calling. She said the real and natural destiny of woman is home-making and to every woman the sweetest tune is the lullaby and her proper proper vocation is to make a happy home for e" man. At this point she recited nicely that familiar poem, "She just keeps house for me." Passing on to writing, Mrs. Blewet traced women writers of Canada and gave brief sketches of the life and works of several. The first was Mrs. Brooks, wife of an army officer. Mrs. Lawson-vwrote historical tales of early times when "the wolf howled in the forest and the Indian lurked at the edge of the clearing." She mentioned and sometimes quoted from writings of Isabella Valancy Crawford, Marjorie Pickthall, Ethelwyn Wetherald, Verna Sheard, Isabel Ecclestone Mackay, Katherine Hale, Miss Coleman, L. M. Montgomery, Nellie McClung and others. She spoke very favorably of Press Women Women of Canada, speaking of the splendid work of Marjorie MacMurchy, Jean Graham, Graham, "Kit" and several others. Her address was given almost entirely without notes. Her speech and manner captivated her audience and that swee : motherly smile was a benediction. To me she seemed to almost talk in poetry and has such poetical ideas, and her metaphors metaphors woven in with bits of real poetry, her talk was like one long poem in blank verse. Later in the program she gave three selections from her own compositions, compositions, commanding perfect attention. She was presented with a huge bouquet of baggy yellow "mums" mixed with greenery---yellow greenery---yellow and green being our school colors. $ & Velvets Plain and Brocaded Dress^Veivets in all the leading colors; reg. 90c and $1, Friday and Saturday, Saturday, per yd 68c Plain Black Dress Velvet, good weight, reg. $1.35, Friday and Saturday, "per yd 95c $ I * a a 1 Laces and Nets Allouer Laces for yokes and collars, black, cream and white, reg. 90c and $1, Friday and^ Saturday, per yd.... 65c White and cream tucked Nets, 18 in wide, special Friday and Saturday, per yd 32c Veilings 18 pieces, black and colored" Veilings, reg. 30c and 35c yd, Friday and, Saturday 15c yd Corset Covers Semi-Ready Corset Covers, lovely patterns? reg. $1.25, Friday and Saturday, each 88c Night Gowns Safety Pins Derby Safety Pin Cards, 12 pins assorted sizes on card, reg. 5c, Friday and Saturday, 2 cards for .5c Dôme Fasteners Black or white Dome Fasteners, all sizes, reg. 5c doz, Friday and Saturday, 2 doz for...5c Twist Black Button Hole Twist, Corticelli, reg. 3c spool, Friday and Saturday 3 for 5c.
