England Just Waking Up to War. Mr. Wm. J. Scott of this town has just received a well-written letter from his brother Pte. Ira Scott of the Machine Gun Division, Canadian Infantry, 1st Contingent Contingent in France, under date of July IO from which we are permitted to make a few excerpts, as follows : Everything in connection with the war is about the same here. We are out of the trenches and back in billets resting but still we can hear the rifle and machine gun fire quite plain. We will likely have to stay another winter in the trenches allright because I think the war has not started properly yet. England is just commencing to wake up and see what a fighting machine she is up against, but, of course, there is no doubt but we shall be victorious but it certainly means an awful sacrifice, but they must be crushed. I know there is none of the boys who would want to quit till they are and I dont think there is a man that ever regretted enlisting. I know if I had it to do over again I would be only too glad to do what I have done let come what may. Even if I am killed what is the difference, we have got to do our duty. I see Dan D. and Alf. Kershaw almost every day. Dan has been wounded twice but being only slightly he was not as lucky as me- to get a trip to England but he may succeed yet. The worst of it is you never know where it is going to hit. Well it is only a gambler's chance anyway. anyway. This is a very lovely day, a nice breeze, just enough to keep us nice and cool. France and Belgium are two very lovely countries in the summer, some fine farms and the grain crops are the best I ever saw. There are some of the finest fields .of oats I ever laid eyes on. This country, ; what I have seen of it, is quite a lot like the French c untry through Abbotsford, Que. I guess that is why the French settled in the lowlands of Quebec. It is'a pity to see such a fine country as Belgium laid in ruins all through another country going military mad. Do not worry about my hardships. I have a better time than you are having. You know we do not have if very hard here, at least I dont think so. Do not pay any attention to the papers for half they print is not true. I think I have* gone thru more hardships in Canada than I have here. Of course it is no place for anybody with cold feet but I think we all have had a little touch when shells are falling too close to us, but you never see a man show it tho'. .
