A newspaper is in no sense a child of charity, says the Collingwood Bulletin. It earns twice over every dollar it receives, receives, and it is second to no enterprise in contributing to the up-building of a community. » The liquor traffic is disgraced, it is being driven out and those who have been steadily on the job are glad- to have the assistance of any others who may arrive at the same conclusion in respect to the Empire's greatest enemy, Inunion fcherei&strengfch--Collingwood- Bulletin. The housing problem is still acute in Bowmanville. We fatfcy that scores of citizens might open their "gués rooms" during these strenuous times to respectable persons and make some easy money--at same time be doing a kindly act. They can make their own choice, of course. The status of Ottawa public, schools seems to have risen considerably under the direction of its two enthusiastic inspectors--Mr. J. H. Putman, B. A. and Dr. E. T, Slemoii, B.A. A copy o:! their report for 1915 is before us anc we find much educational information of interest to all lovers of children anc. school progress Mr. N. W. Rowell and followers favor granting the vote to women of Ontario, but the Hearst Government voteddown the Opposition proposal. Liberal speak ers pointed out the wonderful self-sac rificin g services performed by the worn en of the Province in connection with the war and declared that now was the time to recognize these services by granting them the vote. "Ontario Dry by First of July" wil now be changed to a prose slogan--"1st of September". Surely three months was sufficient time to sell out supplies However, weare thankful to have Pro hibition even at the later date. Why. didn't the Borden Government take the chance of a lifetime to pass Dominion Dominion Prohibition when nearly all the Provinces are going to be-"dry" anyway? anyway? Liberals in the Legislature continue to fight Government House extravagance extravagance and undemocratic luxuriousness of the building which with its site and furnishings will cost this Province near ly a million and a quarter dollars. It is a terrible waste of money and we are glad that some members always vote against expenditures on the Lieutenant Lieutenant Governor's Palace every time they come up. Farmers who have sons or daughters will do well to subscribe for plenty of farm papers. What are a few cents a week compared with the value received if they read about agricultural matters. Before us lies Farm and Dairy for March 23, in which several boys outline the methods which brought them success success in the Acre Profit Competition. Such practical articles as these cannot help but stimulate other boys to try their hand at some of the experiments. Returned soldiers must receive sincere sincere and appreciative consideration of everybody therefore we are glad to see that Mr. N. W. Rowell is urging their claims on the Government Their numbers will continue to increase greatly greatly and the problem of placing them in most suitable positions will become a pressing one. Those who need it should be given technical training for some occupation. Mr. Rowell asked Premier Hearst if he hacTconsiderèd giving preference preference to returned soldiers in vacancies vacancies in the Civil Service. Mr. Hearst's reply was,non-committal. It makes us feel particularly good to see The Mail and Empire falling into line with old temperance papers like this one. It says: There is a very marked difference between the temperance temperance sentiment now asserting itself and that whichtnade itself feltin other campaigns campaigns against the bar. What higher strain is heard in the present demand that brings such prompt response from lawmakers in practically all counties? Undoubtedly it is the spirit of self-reform. self-reform. OLD SETTLERS - Incidents of the Rogers Family I will give a little parly history as I heard it related by my*, father. Very few are now living whose memory will carry them back to 1832. Oh April 5th of that year William Hambly Rogers sailed out of Plymouth, England, in the barque "Trial of Shields". In the Gulf of St. Lawrence the vessel was surrounded with broken.ice: One morning he counted forty sails to the north--all surrounded by ice. They got out of the Gut of Canso and arrived in Quebec, safe and sound, without a sail split or a rope broken, May 15th, He arrived in Port Hope on May 26 h. The first cholera broke out in Quebec or Montreal June 9th or 20th and soon spread over all America. That was the story as I heard it. For à little time he was engaged in carpenter carpenter work and assisted in building "Warren's Mill" in Oshawa. About 1833 he took up the farm on 7th concession of Darlington on which he resided until 1874. The brick house erected there still holds over the front door the brick on which was inscribed the date of its erection, as fresh as when placed there--"1849*'. ■ Amid all the emotions the human heart can feel there is not one sweeter, not one more salutary and more needed in its influence influence than the sentiment which connects one with the spot of his nativity, and which associates him in feeling with parents, with brothers and sisters, and with all that is sweet and holy in the memories of his youth.' On the occasion of a visit to those scenes in 1908,1 viewed again the spot on which stood the old frame school-house called "Baker's where I spent my first days at school, with Daniel Lick as teacher teacher in 1861 and Thomas Hellson in 1862. The images of boys and girls I met there are still vividly before me. A rush of early memories made a mist before my eyes--closing them for a moment, the 46 intervening years vanished and I was a little boy aagin. I well remember how the road, with its hills, seemed to me, when as children we travelled them to church and school, and I can never forget the clear cool day in November 1862 when we passed over those roads to God's silent acre at Zion Church where was laid at rest my mother. But my world was then very small and narrow and now in later years the distance distance seems insignificent and the hills small. On the occasion of this visit to those scenes I found that many of the people I once knew are not there now. But the grassy hillside adjoining Zion church was still there, and in the intervening years had become filled with white monuments. And as I stood at the old gateway and looked toward it, the distance did not seem so long as it once did. And I said. "No, it is not so far, for all these years I have been moving toward it." In this enclosure I found where, some of the people were whom I had missed. They had been steadily going, one after another, through that path into the silent city. On one stone I read "Mary Jane Rogers, who departed this life Nov. nth, 1862, aged 46 years. Wm. Rogers, April 18th, 1877, aged 25 years. Wm. H. Rogers, Rogers, July 18th, 1893, aged 80 years." "Blessed "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." Thus the solitary mound of 1862 had increased increased to three dwellings of my own kindred. My boast is not that I deduce my birth From loins enthroned and rulers of the earth, But higher far my proud pretensions rise-- The son of parents passed into the skies. D. Rogers.
