Sapper Kelman's ' letter is very short, but he gives a brief story of the tunneling operations and mine-blowing timed to cooperate cooperate with surface activities. His letter was censoryi, but it would be of special interest if Walter will give an account of tunneling under the surface and how the men worked for monthsTinderground preparing preparing for the "blow-up" which so greatly surprised the enemv anil proved such a good stroke of warfare. Tell us all the censors will allow to pass, Walter. Somewhere in Belgium, -Europe, Sunday, July 8th, 1917. Dear Mr. James--I write to thank you for sending me The Statesman which Sapper Charles Stinson and I are very glad to receive- with all the home news. We are the only Bowmanville boys in this Co. being drafted from the infantry at the base. Others in the Co. are from Cobalt and Nova Scotia from the mines. We are not near the Canadian Corps so do not run across any of the boys. We had a very fine sight as a war scene- about a month ago when we blew our mine along with several other mines. It was a fine sight for us fellows after working working down in good old mother earth tunnelling tunnelling for many months. The prisoners brought in after the mine-blowing said it seemed as if the whbie earth opened up on them, and with all our guns opening up at the same time the barrage was very intense. intense. It was beyond my powers to describe describe but it was awful. If a soldier were to stand on the edge of one shell hole he- could not step any way without stepping into another shell hole, so numerous had shells been sent over. Thanking you again for your ever welcome welcome home paper. We do so like to get home news. Regards to all town folk. Sapper Walter J. Kelman, 805097, 1st Can.
