Mrs. Lome her father's, W. Sanders Mr. G. H Convalescent Hospital at Whitby is going extensively into the raising of pork and are building large and modern piggeries piggeries for their herd, for which the waste of the institution will be utilized. There will soon be a population of two thousand convalescent soldiers at the institution. Plum puddings from overseas were few this Christmastide and fewer other parcels were sent from home. One reason is that so many Englshman have enlisted and are now at the front or on the "way there. Many, too, have made the supreme sacrifice for King and the Empire. English English mail has been coming almost every day for two weeks and is still arriving. The local post office staff have had a very busy week, the more so because of the illness of postmaster, Major W. C. King who has been laid off with a severe cold. Miss Martha Connors, home from Toronto, rendered valuable assistance during the big rush having been on the staff before leaving town for business college. Christmas mail is still coming in. Lieut. C. W. E. Meath, 2nd Battalion, C. E. F., "Somewhere in France" writing to this office under date of -Dec. I, 1917» says: "I am acting as Scrutineer to-day at elections in our battalion. It is all going Union Government over here. I hope you write me about what happens at home. Rowell is a strong card for thëm there. We go in the line to-morrow until until Xmas eve. We were in the Passchen- dale show and only 5 officers came out of 18". The enormously high price of poultry was no barrier to citizens who were determined to have their Christmas turkey, goose, duck or chicken. The display of holiday meats-was well emphasized by Mr. W. J. Challis by one of the best showings of choice poultry that has been seen in Bowmanville for many moons and by Monday night not even a chicken was left to telTthe story. " The exhibit would have brought sincere credit to a city poulterer's shop. His variety of other meats was also worthy of special mention and he reports a splendid Christmas trade. There seems to be .no scarcity of money with our citizens even under war-time conditions. Mr. Olds, Tabb. Srgt. and Kingston, at Bickell. ' Miss Vida Worden, St. Catharines, with her sister, Mrs. A.
