Darrin Bunker K well between the pipes e Toros, but was no match for the almost constant barrage of shots coming his way. The only scoring play for Bowmanville came from hard work and second effort by Guy Freeman who found Gareth Stone wide open in front of the net and very adeptly put the puck on his stick. Gareth obviously obviously found the mark, as he so often does, to complete a well-executed play. Round Out Round Robin On Sunday, March 15th, McGregor's completed their round robin play-off as they hosted Lindsay. For the sixth time in this round robin they were only equal to their opponent opponent as the final score was 2 - 2. Brad Carnegie scored twice for the Toros. The third and final game in : Collingwood was against their old time rivals, tne Oshawa L.N.H.L. Red Wings. In this game, neither team played well. It was a real "yawner". The Red Wings however did muster up enough energy to score four times. The Toros broke the goose egg on the scoreboard with just .48 seconds remaining in the game. Gareth Stone got the goal with the assists going to Brad Carnegie and Mark Tripp. That game for the most part ended the McGregor Hardware Hardware Major Atoms 80- 81 season, but they did play the following weekend in a couple of "fun 7 ' exhibition games against those same Red Wings. Both games ended in a 3 - 3 tie. Some of the boys switched sweaters and played for their opponents. It was 4 Ah , ) ' i f : n v > ■<4:, good fun and a nice way to end the year. The series started in the Eagles' nest Saturday night where, for those who like offence, offence, 17 goals were scored, The Eagles won 11 to 6. The Sunday matinee was much closer. Eagles' empty net goal by Brad Godfrey clinched their7 to 4 victory. Godfrey had a four goal performance in the Saturday night game. It was a game in which the Eagles came flying out of the gate to catch the 73s tired from their long bus ride. The Essex goalie only got a piece of the puck on Rick Bain's power play goal. His hard drive from the point was set up by Dana Peebles. Peebles then poked in a rebound off the post on a shot by Waydc Preston, The 73s Dave Anthony, who deserves special respect, scored on a pass from Flavio Severin, Brent Clemens' tenacious checking set up Derek Keenan's goal. An outburst of eleven goals were scored in the second period. Clemens was the dominant figure, blinking the red light three times bv using his skating ability to advantage. Dave Anthony matched it by scoring two of his own to register his hat trick, The Eagle scorers in the third period were Dan Strike, Don Farrow and Brad Godfrey. The 73s got goals from Roger Gaiarin, Dan Ebbinghause and Chris Flood, two of which were on power plays, The 73s attempt to play catch-up saw them get as close as one goal in the second period. However, Clemens' third goal on the power play proved to be the game winner. Godfrey and the rookie Bob Dwyer, who celebrated his birthday with a goal in the finals, were the third period goal scorers for the Eagles, The 73s goaltending was shared by Bill VVuerch and Pat Kirwin. Craig German went the distance in the Eagles' net. In the second game of the finals the Eagles came away with a 7 to 4 win. The Sunday afternoon game was a very physical game in which the Eagles refused to back away from the tough Western Ontario Champions. Brad Godfrey's four goal afternoon made the difference, scoring short handed, on a power play, and into an empty net, The strength of the 73s' power play was demonstrated in this game. All of their goals came off the man advantage situation. The game started with both teams making quick scoring chances, Eagles' goalie, German, made two key saves early in the contest. Godfrey's short-handed goal 1st. All members are invited to a complimentary roast beef dinner on May 2nd and should notify the club before April 29th if they plan to attend. Chris Flood scored for the 73s off a power play. Then, there was an empty net goal scored by the Eagles when Bill Wuerch who came in for the third period as a relief goaltender was on the bench for the extra attacker. Brad Godfrey scored the clincher. The playoff scene switches to Essex for the third and fourth game Saturday night at eight p.m. and Sunday at two p.m. The Eagles' success in the 32 playoff games which they have played to date is simply teamwork and desire, a must in any team game. The fifth game will be Friday, May 1, in Bowmanville, and the sixth game Sunday, May 3, at 3:30. p.m. in Essex. The seventh game will be played at 7:30 p.m. in Bowmanville, May 9. The appointment of officials for these playoff rounds is certainly a real question mark. So called higher level officials are brought in, and the quality of officials who are in the immediate area is not recognized. Eagles Oust Gravenhurst In 5 Games The Bowmanville Cowan Pontiac-Buick Junior C's gained gained a berth in the O.H.A. Provincial Provincial Championship round on the strength of a 7 to 0 win over the Gravenhurst Indians last Tuesday in Muskoka. The Indians took a 2 to 1 lead in the series, defeating the Eagles on their home ice, but the determined Bowmanville team bounced back to win the next three games. Two of those wins were earned in Gravenhurst where the Indians have been unbeatable until meeting the Eagles. The Eagle success in the final game could be described in two words: team work. The entire team turned in maximum maximum efforts. The goal production department department was headed by Don Farrow, turning in a hat trick. The Eagle checking game, headed by Paul Godfrey who did a number on the high scoring Indian Steve Vice, was a very important factor in the win. Paul Ryan received most of the print for his effort in the ' Indians' net last time, while Eagle goalie Craig German just went about doing his job. German made several key saves in the first period of the final game, gaining a well deserved shutout. A side note: Craig's parents made a hurried trip to catch the game and were caught for speeding. As Mrs. German described the incident, it was worth every nickel. Stan Greenham made all the right moves to start the Eagle scoring. He was set up by Derek Keenan and Brent Clemens after the Indians had stormed the Eagle net, attempting to get the all- important first goal. Don Farrow's first goal was initiated by Randy MacDonald's forcing the Indians to cough up the puck. Farrow was also assisted by Carl Chambers., : Farrow's second goal came from passes by Brad Godfrey and Rick Bain. With eight seconds left in the second period, Farrow scored again to complete his hat trick and demoralize the Indians. He was assisted by MacDonald. The Eagles' third period scoring was begun by Carl Chambers, assisted by Farrow and MacDonald. Brent Clemens, assisted by Greenham and Keenan, forced forced Ryan to make the first move and then fired the puck upstairs into the net. Brad Godfrey, returning from an injury, scored the final goal. He was set up by Dana Peebles and Wayde Preston. In respect to the Indians, they have come a long way in three short years. You can expect to see them again next year. They have an excellent minor system as shown by their Pee Wee championship this year. Also going for them, Indian coach Bill Reddall has excellent credentials. Thanks to you it works... FOR ALL OF US at 8:21 of the first period was set up by the strong checking of Dana Peebles. The shot went under the outstretched arm of Pat Kirwin for the score. Godfrey's second goal was off the backhand shot, a rebound on a Rick Bain shot, with Dana Peebles also earning earning an assist on the power play. Eagles' third goal was once again the result of very effective effective forechecking, Derek Keenan's goal was assisted by Brent Clemens and Dan Strike. Essex came back with a pair of power play goals later in the first period from Dave Anthony and Dave Flood. Dan Strike's goal at 1(04 minutes into the second period was assisted by Keenan and Clemens. It started a three- goal period for the Eagles. The eventual game winner was by Brad Godfrey, resulting resulting from Stan Greenham breaking up a clearing attempt by Essex. Godfrey's quick shot eluded Kirwin, the Essex goaltender. Derek Keenan converted a blueline drive by Strike into a goal, with Clemens also earning an assist. Dale Flood's late Unibed W&y TIRS SERVICE 299 DEAN AVE.
