i 12 Hie Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 6, 1981 High School Hoêts Official Opening of Education Week Council Briefs Dance at Darlington A fund-raising dance on behalf of the bantam hockey team in Bowmanville will be held September 12 at the Darlington Sports Centre. Council agreed Monday that the centre may be used for this event. Funds raised from the project will help finance the team's trip to Sweden. Report on Study Newcastle's director of public works has been asked to report on the status of a provincial needs study for the portion of a highway running through Newcastle Village's downtown core. The study is examining the need for upgrading Highway Two through the village. Reg was in the Yukon when he developed virus pneumonia and was taken to hospital in Whitehorse. He developed kidney problems and was immediately transferred to hospital in Vancouver and was placed on a dialysis machine. On Saturday he was moved to hospital in Edmonton and, though he is . still on machine regularly, we are glad to say that Reg is improving. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Aspden and family left for the west this week. Ron Finney, who is presently residing in Oshawa, is moving into the Aspden home. We welcome Ron and Debbie back to the village. Another family is welcomed from Oshawa. Richard Gibbs has moved into the former Szkilnyk residence in Pinewoods Estates. Bessie and Annie VanDam were hostesses on Sunday afternoon for a family shower for Diane Jessup of Lakefield. Ron Van Wieringen, the groom-to-be, was honored by his friends at.a party on Saturday night. Vern and Marie Finney were guests on Saturday at the wedding of Helen Van Seek and Philip Lake in St. Andrew's United Church, Millbrook. The reception and wedding dance were held at the Devil's Elbow, Bethany, where the groom is the chef. Helen is the elder daughter of Harry and Marie Van Beek, former Pontypool residents. Mr. and Mrs' Fred Youngman spent the weekend at their cottage on Lake Dalrymple. Ken Halfyard of Iroquois Falls was an overnight visitor on Tuesday with the Cliff Fallis'. Wendy Halfyard, a Trent University student, returned home on Wednesday with her father. We are glad that Merita Willis has returned home from hospital. Russell Kerr is again a patient in Bowmanville Hospital -- this time with pneumonia. Paul Mucha is home following a week spent in hospital and Albert Bowin is still in Civic Hospital and will be there for at least another week. Toby Arbeau accompanied her husband, Freeman, on a trip to Sault Ste. Marie last week. The Bethany Pastoral Charge is looking for a new minister as Marg Scott leaves us in June. The Pastoral Relations Committees from Bethany and Pontypool meet on Tuesday night. Members of the Pontypool committee are Dorothy Turner, Donna Bryant, Glenn Luxton and Keith Dewar with Frank Stacey as an alternate. The Roy Hamilton home is having a face-lifting with new siding being put on the front, a new fence installed and the large tree at front cut down. Considerable damage was done to the Hamilton property when a truck rammed into it about a month ago. Ruth Richardson, Ruth Fisk, Anne Armitage and Grace Richardson attended a family shower on Sunday for Joan Richardson held at the home of Jim and Sandra Richardson on Kawartha Drive, Lindsay. Joan is to become the bride of Rick Harrison of Lindsay on June 6th in Pontypool United Church. Mrs. Joe Kovacs fell off a horse last week and broke her -right wrist. We trust that Evelyn's injury is not too painful. On Saturday, Gerald, Jessie, Robin, Ruth and Bruce Fisk and Chris Armitage travelled to Cardiff to attend the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr, and Mrs. Art Nicholl (formerly Edith Fisk). Sunday callers at the Fisks' were Max and Gary Fisk of London and David Fisk of Toronto. Margaret and Stan Wright were Sunday dinner guests of Tom and Joan Watson, Peterborough. Congratulations to the Grandview Gymnastics team which participated in a Victoria County competition at I.E. Weldon on Friday and Saturday. The team returned with the overall Junior, Intermediate and Senior trophies. .
