The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 6, 1981 3 ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ WELCOME GESTURE -- Super sports fan lawyer Terry Kelly of Oshawa attended the Jr. C. Eagles game in Essex on Sunday and he was so impressed that after the game he donated $100 for a meal for the players. Mayor Garnet Rickard picked up the balance of the tab at the 5th Wheel Truck Stop. That's real support. ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ ^OtO Smile Dad, This one's for Mom! 2nd5x7 HALF PRICE 3rd 5x7. Don't Curse Those Photo Accidents Did you ever stop to think about what a dull world this would be if everything went exactly as planned? Luckily, that's hardly the case. To break up the monotony, we have the dogged event known , as the "accident." Often, when an accident occurs in photography, the results are disappointing. But they needn't be. Take, for example, the slide that was accidentally overexposed. overexposed. The result is a washed-out, too-light, dull scene suitable for the trash can. ■ Ahh, but it's also a perfect candidate for some doctoring' | up that may not only save it, but also turn it into a breathtaking breathtaking example of creative photographic art. Either by sandwiching it together with a "normal" slide or by double- exposing it on paper in the home darkroom. To sandwich two or more slides together, remove the slides from their mounts, being careful not to scratch or smudge the film. Use a compressed air can or a bulb- type blower to remove any dust particles from the surfaces of the slides and place one over the other. Use a thin strip of tape to position them, if necessary. Next, mount the slides, preferably in a glass slide mount, which will prevent the two strips of film from buckling out, resulting in distortion, Finally, either copy the sandwich or have it copied by a professional photo lab. Exposures can be lightened or darkened, and colors can be altered with color compensating (CC) filters. Another way to utilize those washed-out slides is to make a double exposure on color print-from-slide paper, available from your local photo dealer. Make your first exposure as you would normally, but underexposing the paper by about one-half f/stop. Do the same with the second slide for the second exposure. Then evaluate the results after the paper is dry. (Never attempt to evaluate wet paper, as color shifts will result as the print dries.) Those are just two ways to utilize accidents in the field of photography. Far more often, you're likely to stumble upon one of those "accidental" scenes that just seem to happen -- and often at the least opportune time. However, if you keep an eye out for them, the results can be gratifying. An . example? Suppose you're outside taking snapshots of your pet dog. Suddenly, the inquisitive pup stumbles upon a large frog or toad basking in the tall grass. Instead of sitting back and waiting to see what happens, you should instantly shift into photographic gear, getting down as close to the animals as possible, with shutter release clicking and images -- perhaps priceless or even prize-winning images -- being recorded on film. You get the point. In a way, much of photography is accidental... finding things to photograph which we didn't set out to find. Taking the unexpected, the accidental, and capitalizing on it often makes the difference between a casual snapshooter and an effective communicator of visual messages -- a photographer. Of course, photographic accidents don't always work to the photographer's benefit. One well-known Midwestern photographer was out walking his dogs in the woods when a great horned owl landed in a tree not more than 20 feet away. Since the photographer had his camera along, he was elated. Slowly, quietly, he aimed, focused, composed, and cocked. As the great bird peered down at the camera, the photographer tried to fire. .. with no luck. Again he tried with the same results. Then he checked the exposure window. It read 36. The owl, as if reading the photographer's mind, winked once, twice,, then slowly turned and quietly glided off into the early evening dusk. . , Letter to The Editor Dear Sir: .
