v 8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 6, 1981 Eagles Win Title From Page 1 However, their plan fell apart when referee Brad Horton took charge of the situation with 31 seconds into the first period by ejecting Roger Gaiarin for butt-ending. The Eagles converted the automatic five minute penalty into two power play goals. Veteran centre Brad Godfrey moved in front of the net to fire a high shot over the shoulder of Pat Kirwin at the 55 second mark, assisted by point man Rick Bain and Stan Greenham while Dana Peebles screened the goalie. Greenham put the Eagles up by two, courtesy of a two man advantage. Stan took the pass from Captain Don Farrow. In the first period, the Eagles held an advantage of 5 to 2 in power play opportunities. The 73s continued their self- destructive ways in the second period and as a result were assessed nine minors to Eagles' three. Rick Bain's power play drive blinked the red light on a set-up by Brad Godfrey. The Eagles' checking pattern worked superbly for the most part of the game but broke down when Chris Mathews scored, catching all Eagles backing in on goalie Craig German. The 73s finally got the message for the first time in the series and came out skating for the third period. They scored at the 8:17 mark of the period on a face-off deflection by Bud Plain. The 73s forced the play, creating goal scoring chances that were nullified by German's saves and the blanket checking by the tenacious Eagles. Breaking in with excellent stick-handling, Wayde Preston came through with the game clincher, beating Kirwin on a slapper to the top comer. Derek Kennan's break away goal put the icing on the cake. He was put in the clear with a pass from Brent Clemens. The work of referee Brad Horton cannot go unmentioned. He took full control of the game for the entire 60 minutes and proved hockey can be played in tough. aggressive fashion without taking unnecessary penalties. For anyone listening to the broadcast on radio station CKAR, there is no doubt they could hear the Go-Eagles-Go chant by the nearly 100 faithful fans who encouraged the Eagles all the way. They had to be instrumental in the victory. The Eagles' sponsor, Tom Cowan, along with A1 Strike, took time out to drive to Essex to support the team. Also attending the game was superfan superfan Terry Kelly, who gave the Eagles full marks for a complete team effort. In recognition of the Eagles players, a comment by one of the veterans, "It's nice to be a winner with a bunch of losers." The team is made up of some players who have been there before, but the majority of the Eagles are players who have never known the joy of winning. The 1980-81 Eagles aid not know the definition of the word quit. The championship was truly a learning experience in life; They applied the three D's - dedication, desire, and discipline - on their way to winning the league championshijp over the powerful Cobourg Cougars and then sweeping all challengers aside in winning the Ontario championship on the opponents' home ice, truly a sign of a winning team. The Eagles team rolled into town late Sunday night not knowing what was in store for them. Their first thoughts were that the community had turned their backs as they drove through the deserted King Street. The bus turned towards the arena and to their surprise and elation, the red carpet treatment was awaiting them. Complete with welcome home banners, Mayor Garnet Rickard and Councillors Ann Cowman and Maurice Prout greeted them. Next, the team took a fire truck ride around the town, followed by Eagle supporters in their cars, climaxing what could be described as an experience the players will never forget. It was another team effort by the Eagles as they completely dominated play. This game was described as a must win game by the 73s, who needed to come up with a victory on Eagle home ice to take the series back to Essex in a position to wrap up the championship. They also didn't want to play any seventh game in the Eagles' nest in Bowmanville. The 73's game plan was once again intimidation. Bowmanville attempted to maintain as much discipline as possible under the circumstances, while Essex looked on from the penalty box. The Eagles connected for no less than five well executed power play goals. Rick Bain was the big shooter for the home team, scoring three goals. The pick of the Eagle defenders was Dan Strike, now free from school studies. One of the Eagles' strong points through the playoffs was their balanced scoring attack. It was illustrated once again as the other single goals were spread over all three lines. Eagle first period goals came from Brad Godfrey with 39 seconds into the game, unassisted. Then Greg Brunt was set up with a goal by Derek Keenan and Rick Bain, That was followed by Carl Chambers' power play goal, assisted by Randy McDonald. Rick Bain's short handed goal from a break away turned out to be the key goal of the game late in the first period. Eagle second period goals started with Rick Bain, assisted by Dan Strike. The other two goals of the period were scored by Stan Greenham from Dana Peebles and Bain, and then by Rick Bain with assists from Godfrey and Peebles. Eagles matched their second period goal production in the third period. Stan Greenham's break away goal beat goalie Pat Kirwin cleanly. After receiving a centring pass from Keenan, Scott Linton earned a goal. Peebles' final Eagle goal was assisted by Bob Dwyer and Don Farrow. Attention G.M.
