April 21st marked a number of firsts in Ontario Ontario politics. On this day, the new Speaker for the Thirty - second Parliament of Ontario took his seat to preside over the debates of the Legislature. The new Speaker is John Turner, M.P.P. for Peterborough Riding. John has been a caucus colleague since 1971 and has impressed all by his ability and integrity. I am certain he will bring new strength and dignity dignity to the office of the Speaker. I was also very honoured, honoured, on behalf of my Riding, to be nominated Deputy Speaker. The position requires all of the Members' approval and I was specially flattered flattered with Bob Nixon, former Liberal Leader, Leader, seconding the motion to my appointment. The Deputy Speaker performs performs all the duties of the Speaker in his absence absence in addition to being the Chairman of Committee of the whole House. I intend to do a future column on these specific duties in conjunction conjunction with my monthly monthly television program. A number of other firsts occurred on the 21st with the presence of many new Progressive Conservative members in the Legislature. This was the first sitting of the Legislature involving involving these newly-elected Members. In addition, the 21st marked the first Throne Speech read by His Honour Honour John Black Aird, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. Mr. Aird was appointed to his present position following following the retirement of Pauline McGibbon last August. The Throne Speech marks a new beginning for our province. Much of. the BILD program, Premier Davis's program program for growth and development, development, is contained in the document, as well as several supplemental social commitments. The next five years promise new challenges from changing population population shifts, as well as changes in technology, life style and world economy. The Throne Speech contained proposals proposals for a new framework framework for growth, strong enough to encourage initiative initiative yet supple enough to - anticipate changes in the world scene. While new initiatives wiU be undertaken to support manufacturing, resource and technological technological industries, the Davis Government will not forget its commitment commitment to provide support for health care, education, education, day care and those in need. We recognize that these many services services are an integral part of social development development in Ontario, as well as the mainstay of our high quality of life. In recognition of International International Year of Disabled Disabled Persons, Ontario is strengthening its policies policies to support greater community involvement involvement by these talented and special people. Later this spring an educational program will increase public awareness of the needs of the handicapped who wish to become active members of the community. community. The BILD program is now well known to those who follow public affairs affairs in Ontario. Its various various projects was the subject of debate by the media and at all-candidate's all-candidate's meetings. The preparation of bills enacting enacting this program will mean Ontario is gearing Up for continued growth for the'next five years, and beyond.
