Letter to the Editor The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 20,1961 Sweden Bound Bantams Raise $188 at Car Wash 'J'- ii Bowmanville, May 18,1981 Dear Mr. James: Every time an extremist embarks on a course of action he thinks will lead to a better world, society is confronted with despicable violence and moans: "What is this world coming to?" Acts of terrorism ought to be condemned and the perpetrators perpetrators deserve to be punished in accordance with the law. Terrorists will defy all rules so vital to society and it would appear, therefore, that if all terrorists on earth could be rounded up in one clean sweep, put on trial and rightly incarcerated, "this world" would have a better chance. Unfortunately, the resulting relief would be no more than temporary, since terrorism is a form of rebellion carried to its ugly extreme. It would be convenient to assume that terrorists are born but it makes more sense to suggest that they are made, even though this shifts at least part of the responsibility for violent acts, motivated by blind hatred, to the very society that condemns these acts. Personally, I find it most uncomfortable to think that I share the guilt of killing the two Kennedys; Martin Luther King; or Laporte; that I must accept some of the blame for the attempted assassinations of President Reagan or Pope John Paul. I know for a fact that I don't want to kill anybody, nor see anybody killed, simply because because I have no reason to hate anyone that much. In anger, I may say some unkind things about somebody else, only to regret it afterward, but deliberately deliberately taking away somebody's somebody's life....that would be unthinkable. On the other hand, I am part of the society that fails to demand honesty from its leaders; a society also that condones usury and measures success in terms of money; a society where politicians politicians of all import and persuasion, as well as labour organizers, can place perpetuation perpetuation of their position of power at the centre of their interest. I, too, am part of a community of people who look out for themselves and are barely touched by the plight of others. Of course I give to good causes; I even deem it my duty, and like most others, I cherish the system we call democracy. Most of the time, however, I am either too complacent, or too busy fending fending for myself, to take issue with those who - driven by greed - abuse the system; the parasites who vegetate on the very principles that underlie human freedom, and who cultivate terrorism in the process. One recent sunny day, in St. Peter's Square, a fanatic raised his gun and aimed it at the Pope, and there....but for the grace of God, stood I. Sincerely, W. Hulsman 68 King St. E.-902, Bowmanville.
