At this point a few l defensive mistakes allowed Ajax to tie the game. The first Bowmanville goal came after Richard Seeton carried the ball along the right wing before crossing it in front of the goal. Dayne Lycett seized seized on a defensive miscue by Ajax to loft the ball into the top corner of the net. The next goal was scored by Mark Halliday who intercepted intercepted a clearing pass by Ajax and kicked the ball into the net. Playing a strong game for Bowmanville in his first year as an all star, was Julius Siebenga who controlled much of the midfield. By Don Fraser On Sunday afternoon at Soper Greek Park, Bowmanville Bowmanville Senior Merchants were full measure for their 7 - 2 win over defending 1980 league leaders, Whitby Merchants. Doug Crough started on the mound for Bowmanville and picked up the win. He pitched a strong game for six innings, giving up a single run on Turner's home run in the seventh. Joe Nowlan came on in relief and got out of the inning without any further damage. Whitby lead off the . eighth with a single by Robitallie who scored on Heffer's single. Jim Taylor , then came in and finished the game to pick up the save. Bowmanville scored their first run in third when John Stainton reached first on an error, stole second on Dean Rutherford's hunt single. Whitby then intentionally walked Cryderman to load the bases. Stainton then scored on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt single. They scored two more in the fifth when Cryderman Cryderman reached first on an error, advanced on Crough's single. Cornell walked to load the bases and the two runs scored on Gary Akey's single. The Merchants went ahead by five in the eighth when, with one out, Johnny Stainton homered for the first run, Dean Rutherford singled and scored on a double by Steve Parker, who has returned to Bowmanville after a year's absence. The final two runs came off Cryderman's home run that just cleared the fence in left centre. The eleven hit Bowmanville attack was led by Crough, Akey, and Rutherford who had two each, with Stainton, Cryderman, Parker, Cornell, and Finney getting one each. Oshawa Legionnaires will have played in Bowmanville Tuesday night with Kendal being the visitors next Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Let's get out and give them your support.
