Baker McSweeney's bread and rolls are sold fresh at the counter the same day they are baked in the oven. "We're trying to give a super quality product at a better price," explained Ernie King, a partner in the local Baker McSweeney store which opened in Bowmanville last month. Trained as a baker in Ireland, Ireland, Mr. King's 22 years of experience have taught him that bakers are only successful successful if they produce a fresh quality product. Natural ingredients are one of the keys to the taste of the 20,000 rolls and 12,000 to 14,000 loaves of bread which are baked by Baker McSweeney's in the Durham Region each week. These products have no added preservatives or additives, additives, Mr. King said. And he can speak with authority about the contents of his product. product. Ernie King designed the recipes used by the franchise and he still has a keen interest in the baking of McSweeney's products at Pickering. The local Baker McSweeney's McSweeney's shop is located in the new Bowmanville shopping plaza at the site of the former McDonald Ford dealership. The franchise is owned by partners Len Jones, Ernie King and Kingsley Van Nest. In addition to their new store in Bowmanville, they also operate outlets in Pickering, Pickering, Ajax, and Oshawa. Since the store opened last month, response has been favorable. Between 600 and 700 people visit the store on Fridays and Saturdays. "The potential in this area is terrific," terrific," said Mr. King. A visit to the Bowmanville store will reveal that there's more than baked goods at Baker McSweeney's. In addition addition to the bins filled with fresh, fragrant rolls and loaves of every description, there are also bulk spices, nuts and candies for sale. The store also has a counter for cold cuts and cheese. A cooler for soft drinks is to be installed and the store will make a sandwich to a customer's specifications. An oven is to be installed at the rear of the building in order to supply baked goods such as pies and brownies which will round out the selection available at McSweeney's. Customers should also watch this newspaper for weekly coupons advertising special buys. One special offers kaisers on sale for 99 cents per dozen. Other specials are planned on items such as loaves, and muffins and much more. "We don't exist unless the customer gets what he wants," said Mr. King. And his company is making every effort to find out the needs of shoppers and then meet that requirement. The Baker McSweeney's parent company includes a total of 16 branch stores and has been established for the past three years. In the four Durham Region stores, Baker McSweeney's employs about 40 full-time and part-time personnel. Three of these are at Bowmanville. The goal of the company is to make McSweeney's as well known for baked goods as McDonalds is for hamburgers. And judging from the initial success of the enterprise, it should't be long before people think of baking and McSweeney McSweeney as they think of bread and butter. It was once again time for Daily Vacation Bible School. Every - week day approximately 65 children came to enjoy the variety of activities provided. After opening exercises the children moved on to individual classes for Bible study, songs, games, refreshments and crafts. This bee hive of activity was supervised by 8 teachers, 10' helpers and various other people in different capacities. The highlight of the week was when the children were taken to the Applewood Home for the Handicapped in the Veltri Complex. It was a wonderful sight to see the two groups make friends and play with each other, because when the physical differences were overlooked we realized they were all just "children". Each day the children brought in collection which at the end of the two weeks totalled $164.46 and allowed us to purchase some equipment and toys for our friends at Applewood On Friday, church basement crowded because parents and other visitors had been invited to share in the closing programme. At the end of the two weeks it was wonderful to see how much the children had learned about the theme "Come Follow Jesus" and it is hoped that their lives have been somehow touched by their knowledge of God and His Son, Jesus Christ, the Saviour.
