The event, drew a huge crowd. ★★★★★★★★★★ By Rod Stork, Acting Agricultural Representative RURAL YOUTH IN ACTION AT BLACKSTOCK FAIR 4-H Agricultural members in Durham were showing their best at Blackstock Fair on Saturday, August 28th. Blackstock Fair is host of the Achievement Day for over 40 4-H members in the Beef, Sheep and Swine 4-H clubs. The day is a highlight of a summer's activities in the 4-H Program. Following a summer summer of raising a calf, a lamb, or a hog, along with learning about agriculture at meetings, members train and show their 4-H project animal at the Fair. Although the member's project project is judged at the Fair for who has the best animal, the real test comes in the showmanship showmanship class, when members members have the chance to demonstrate demonstrate their ability to show an animal to its best advantage. The day means an early rise for the member, a lot of preparing preparing to show, but in the end its a lot of fun for the members, members, friends, parents, leaders and others who dome to watch. The following are the results of the 4-H Achievement day: Top Swine Showman - Brent McLaughlin; Reserve Swine Showman - Jeff Byers; Top Sheep Showman - Kevin Taylor; Taylor; Reserve Sheep Show- person - Francine Taylor; Top Senior Beef Showman - Brian Goble; Reserve Senior Beef Showman - Lynn McLaughlin; Top Junior Beef Showman - Bob Goble; Reserve Junior Beef Showman - Terry Ormis- ton; Champion Market Hog - Robert Green; Champion Lamb - Debbie VanCamp; Champion Beef Steer - Laurie Virtue; Champion Junior Beef Steer - Jeff Byers; Champion Senior Beef Heifer - Brian Goble; and Champion Junior Beef Heifer - Bob Goble. HIGHWAY TRAFFIC ACT CHANGES HELP FARMERS Some financial savings and greater flexibility in the use of farm vehicles will result from recent amendments to the Highway Traffic Act. These changes are based on recommendations made in a report done by Everett Biggs . regarding farm related trucking. trucking. The changes will extend a cost saving avenue to farmers and are a direct .^response to farmer's wishes. The use of "farm" license plates for commercial motor vehicles is being extended to allow farmers to transport products, supplies or equipment equipment of other farmers provided provided the transportation is not undertaken for compensation. In addition, dump vehicles owned or leased by a farmer, bearing "farm" plates and used for transportation of the farmer's own goods to his farm will not be subject to periodic inspection as re- guired of other commercial dump vehicles. It was agreed that farm dump vehicles used to haul the odd load of grayel to the owner's farm should not be held to the same standards expected of commercial trucks. Companion amendments are being made to enable farmers to continue to drive their own farm vehicles without without the need for a commercial driver's license. The farm plate and driver licensing amendments take effect September September 15,1982 with the dump vehicle amendment effective September 1,1982. 4-H'ER SELECTED FOR NATIONAL TRIP Walt Vice, son of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Vice of R.R. 2, Blackstock has been selected to attend the National 4-H Citizenship Seminar in Ottawa in April of 1983.
