The Masonic lodge held a service on Friday evening, and a memorial service was held on Sunday evening from Orono United Church, with Rev. Peters, Bowmanville as guest minister. Many beautiful floral arrangements were arranged in tne front of the church. Members of the Orono Skating Club served lunch, following the service. Sympathy Sympathy of the community is extended to his surviving wife and family. Mr. and Mrs. H.M.Mercer attended the decoration day held at Bethesda Cemetery, on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Lome Bowins visited freinds and relatives in Brantford and Hamilton over the Labor day week-end. Miss Catherine Stewart, Kendal was a recent visitor with Mrs. Mary J. Morris. St. Saviour's church hall is almost completed and will be a wonderful addition to church activities. Members of the church wish to thank Mr. Leek for graciously filling in, while Rev. Haldenby was on vacation, vacation, and are happy to have him as new lay reader. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Taylor, and Mr. and Mrs. William Reid attended the funeral last Tuesday for the late Mrs. Elgin Taylor of Enniskillen. Mrs. Ethel Lycett spent the Labour day week-end visiting her son Douglas, Toronto and attended the Antique Sale held at the Harborfront. Mr. Barry Challice and Donald Challice, Oshawa, attended attended the Tractor Pull, Monday and were dinner guests of the O.Challices along with Mrs. Greta Stewart. Orono Horticulture are preparing for the annual Flower Service on Sunday, Sept. 12, in Orono United Church, and also supplying flowers for the Orono fair arena stage. Challice were guests of the Albert Munnekes at their new property, Ski View Drive, Bethany, and enjoyed a delightful picnic. A large crowd attended the Tractor pull on Labor day Monday in Orono fair grounds. Altho' the weather was dark and .cold, the competitions were excellent and crowd pleasing. Orono United Church News Fifteen ladies of unit No.l met at the home of Mrs. Thelma Gilbank last week for the first fall meeting. Ethel Lycett, Thelma Gilbank and Margaret Hancock presented a hilarious skit entitled "Fault Finding" which was much enjoyed and educational. Business and announcements were given out and our first fall executive meeting is Monday Sept.13, at 1:30 p.m. in Friendship rooms. Eleven ladies of unit No. 5 Leskard met in the church hall for first fall meeting. Hymns were sung and everyone repeated the 23rd psalm. Mrs. Rita Jonah called on Mrs. Alva Grant to come forward and receive here Life Membership pin from the U.C.W.Mrs. Grant has been a faithful member and always prepares such excellent devo- tionals. Business included plans for our upcoming fall Bazaar and we are starting our first fall card party, Sept. Sat. 18. Our regular craft classes will again resume every Wed. afternoon in church hall. KENDAL NEWS Kendal United Church Women met at the home of Mrs. Margaretta Stevens on Wednesday, September 1st with nine ladies present. Mrs, Lorna Stapleton opened the meeting with a poem entitled, 'Let us Seek an Inner Stillness'. Mrs. Stevens conducted conducted the devotional on the first of a study of People of the Bible. The role call was answered by telling 'Why I belong to the U. C, W. Miss Stewart gave her topic on the 20th anniversary of the U. C. W. She told of the different names the ladies group had been called through the years. It was first the Ladies Aid, then the Women's Association and in 1961 became known as the United Church Women. Subscriptions to the Observer were taken, also a donation to Kendal church was made. The date of Kendal Bazaar is to be on the second Saturday of November, the 13th. The October meeting is to be held in the home of Mrs. Dora Youngman. On Friday evening the Brooks Memorial Junior Orange Lodge held a mini penny sale and card party in Kendal hall. There were six tables in were as Pam Jackson, .... Hancock; high gent - Cathy Switzerfplaying on a man's card) ; low gent - Peter Russel. The 50-50 draw was won by April Switzer. The regular card parties will start for the fall term on Saturday, October 16th with a penny sale after the lunch. David Mercer has been in Oshawa General Hospital this past week where he had surgery on his eye. He is home now and hopes it will be much improved. Also Misses Sheila and Lisa Hawkins of Toronto. Mrs. Edith Walton, Mrs. Olive Little, Mrs. Pearl Clark and Mrs. Mabel Elliott spent Sunday at the Lang Century Village. It was an interesting day as they had demonstrations demonstrations of many crafts. Also a corn roast as done in the pioneer days. While there they called on Mr. and Mrs. Donald Barber, Nipissing, one evening. Miss Catherine Stewart visited Mrs. May Garbutt last Friday afternoon and had supper with her. Mrs. Julia Jackson called on Mrs. Edna Dobson, Starkville, on Sunday.;, Mrs. Ellie Rickerstaff called on Miss Stewart on Monday. She will be attending Osgoode Hall, Toronto, again this year. At church on Sunday morning morning there was a very good attendance. Rev. A. Tizzard's sermon was entitled 'Keep On' a very fitting message for Labour Day weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Milton Boyd from Toronto visited with their son and family Mr. and Mrs. Jack Boyd, also with Helen Boyd and Fred Wilson a week ago Sunday.
