Without further ado, let us examine the past week's action on a day-by-day basis. Monday, Sept. 20th - the Squirts semi-final produced an inconclusive result as the Newcastle K of CII squad battled Roy Nichols to a 1-1 draw through regulation time and two periods of overtime. Marty Burgess scored for Roy Nichols while Adam Mohns scored for Newcastle. The Colts had an opportunity to end the suspense when Adam Mohns was awarded a penalty shot in the first over-time period, but was unable to beat the Roy Nichols' keeper. Tuesday, Sept. 21st. - the Newcastle Squirts renewed their battle with Roy Nichols and this time managed to come up triumphant as a goal by Adam Mohns proved sufficient for a 1 - 0 victory. This win meant that the Colts were now in the championship final against the powerful Hampton squad. While the Squirts were advancing, the Port of Newcastle Mosquitoes were closing their season with a 2 - 1 loss to Kinsmen Rovers in a semi-final contest. Both teams had plenty of opportunities to run up a decisive margin, yet the winning goal came only minutes from the end. Anthony Barnoski scored the lone goal for the Colts while Carmine Cappelli and Derek Veiling scored for the victors. The boys gave it a good try as the score was still only 1 -1 well into the second half until Neil Gerrits coolly scored a beautiful beautiful goal for Hampton. Richard Bateman added an insurance tally as he scored his second goal. Chris McSweeney scored for the Colts while Benjamin Vanderheyden played a very strong game for the Colts. Thursday, Sept. 23rd, - the Atom championship went to the Rangers as they defeated Marketplan by a score of 2 - 0 at Waverley Public School. Once again we do not have any details for this game. The Mosquitos, in an all Bowmanville Bowmanville final played at Tyrone, saw Hooper's defeat Rovers by a 2 -1 score. It was a see-saw battle with many missed opportunities by both sides. Hooper's struck first as Darrin Bunker scored. Mark Tripp eventually managed to deadlock the score at 1 -1 until 5 minutes from the end Darrin Bunker scored his second of the game for the final of 2 -1. There were quite a number of spectators at this game and both teams expressed their appreciation for the parental support received throughout the season. Saturday night at the Bowmanville arena. All eight teams saw action this weekend and while the men are all at least a year older (this year you must be 32 to qualify) most appear desirous of proving that they aren't getting older just better, While Mayor Rickard, who has opened our season every year, dropped the puck at centre ice Saturday night to allow Bowmanville Restaurant Restaurant & Tavern and Clinic Pharmacy to open the 82-83 season with a very crowd pleasing game. B.R. & T got off to an early 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Bates and Chapman. Clinic Pharmacy countered in the second period with three goals of their own to take a 3-2 lead into the dressing room. Woolner opened the scoring », for Clinic and Vat Murdock G.P. G A Mip. Pts. 2 3 3 0 2 1 2 1 1 2 got a pair. The third period saw B.R. & T tie the game up on a goal by Moon then go in front 4-3 on a beautiful solo effort from Michael Clouthier. Len Jay tied the game at 4-4 as the clock was running out. Both teams served notice that they will be a lot stronger this year and cannot be taken for granted. In Saturday's second game, the rejuvinated Town Sports came out from the opening whistle and appeared in midseason midseason form to take a 3-0 lead but had to hold on to skate off with a very entertaining 3-2 win. Mark Clary opened the scoring for Town Sports early in the game. Doug Ferguson notched the second goal mid way through the period and Vern Beck made it 3-0 before United Drug got untrackcd. Doug Rickard and Rick Drew succeeded in putting the puck past Mike Willoughby, Mike is trying to break in a new set of ads this year but doesn't feel e is ready to test them out in game conditions yet. Sunday morning at seven seems awfully early to many but Courtice Auto Wreckers and Shoppers Drug Mart weren't sleeping as Courtice earned their first victory of the season in a closely contested match. Courtice opened the scoring on Tom Fennell's goal only to have Shoppers bounce back with a pair from Kevin Lacey and Griffis. Courtice tied the game at two when Tom Fennell put his second of the game past Steve Plumbtree between the pipes for Shoppers. Shoppers took the lead again when Gary James found the range only to have Courtice tie the game on a goal from Peter Henderson. Fuller settled the game late in the period when he beat Plumbtree to give Courtice a 4-3 win. Sunday's final game saw the Beasties and the Flying Dutchman play close hockey for two periods before the Dutchmen finally emerged to put the game away in the third period. Paul Bycok opened the scoring for the Dutchmen only to have Bob Shantz tie the game at one, Newcomer Wally Mazur gave the Dutchmen the lead 2-1 before Doug Taylor scored unassisted late in the first period to give the Dutchmen a 3-1 lead going into the second period. Bob Shantz scored his second of the game and J. Edmonds made the score three before Don Moriarity notched his first of the season, Shoppers tied it up at four when Bob Shantz got the first hat trick of the season. Both have strengthened where it counts. Courtice Auto Wreckers could be the dark horse. Beasties and Shoppers are probably still a man or so away. One thing all teams do promise is very entertaining hockey every Saturday night and Sunday morning.
