I S 10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, October 13,1982 Mature Students Take Business Update Course at B,H,S. Separate School Candidate vH-v i B' Aneta Dewey is a mother of two children, works at Port Darlington Marina in the afternoon and attends the BHS business skills update class each weekday morning. She is pictured above boning up on her typewriting skills. At the conclusion of this year's businss skills update course offered at BHS, mature student Joan Caine will look for a part time job. For the first time Bowmanville High School is offering a full term business skills update credit course for mature students. Graduates from the program, which runs half days, receivè either a secondary school diploma or a certificate. Members of the 28 student class are shown above during a typing session. Every weekday morning 28 area women are throwing down their dishtowels, vacuum cleaners and laundry baskets in favor of going to school. They are students involved in a pilot program at Bowmanville Bowmanville High School designed to upgrade the business skills of mature adults. The class consists of 28 females and one male student ranging in age . from 20 to 50 years. Most of the women are homemakers and mothers who are extremely impressed with the Business Skills Update course being offered for the first time at BHS. However, many of them admit it is a demanding chore to juggle school studies and house chores so that neither suffers. A number of the students have been away from the books for more than a decade. Some of them studied commercial commercial skills in high school several years ago while it's a totally new ball of wax to others. The reasons given for enrolling in the program vary from one student to the next with one exception. They all aspire to improve themselves. À Maple Grove mother of three in her early thirties, Jeannie Papanicolopoulos, who is enrolled in the business skills update program stated, "I have been at home for 10 years and I'm afraid to face the world without a little more in the way of education behind me." "My vocabulary is very limited which makes me afraid to talk to people but when I'm done with the'course I hope to get a job." Another student enrolled in the program is a 33-year-old mother of two public school children, Marlene Waters of Courtice. Mrs. Waters says she believes the update course will give her a security in the work force and will provide her with credentials to present to a prospective employer. Florence Webb, a registered nurse from Newcastle village and the mother of three teenage children is also taking EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS The number of clients unemployed and registered for work at the Canada Employment Centres in Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa for the month of September totalled 14,336, consisting of 6,632 female and 7,704 male clients. Placements in the three offices totalled 515 for the month, which compares to a total of 357 placements during August. The majority of clients were registered in Clerical and related; Sales; Service; Machining and related; Product Fabricating, Assembling and Repairing, Construction Trades; Material Handling and related. During September, the greatest employment opportunities existed in textile manufacturing, Agriculture, Retail Trade, Accommodation and Food Services. In September, there were 7 agreements signed under the General Industrial Training Program. As a result, 10 people will benefit from both training and employment, in the Region of Durham. At the end of September, there were 121 students in the skill courses sponsored by the Canada Employment Centre the course. She is one of two RNs in the program who are working to add business skills to their present qualifications. Mrs. Webb says the course will give her an opportunity to explore the job possibilities which exist on the administrative administrative side of nursing. "It's an adjustment trying to organize everything because we are still homemakers homemakers and mothers," she stated. Two of Mrs. Webb's children are . currently students at BHS. "Since I started the course my whole famiy has supported me one hundred per cent," she said. All the students praised both the program and the sensitivity sensitivity of their various teachers. The study curriculum of the program includes an exposure to accounting, business correspondence, business math and machines and typing and office procedures. Any mature student applying for acceptance in the update program must have been out of school for at least one year. It is a "no cost", course other than a $75 outlay for books and supplies. BHS director of business education, Caroline Naples, says the mature students have adjusted beautifully to both the social and academic situation situation at the school. She explained explained that the program, which has already been implemented implemented in other Ontario schools, became a reality because of a stuarts surge in recent years for adult education. The business skills update program at BHS is the first in the western area of hte Northumberland Newcastle board jurisdiction. Harry Bradley, BHS principal, principal, says the mature students are an enthusiastic bunch who really want to learn. "The program is certainly a welcome welcome addition to our school," he stated. The objective of the course is to help the mature student learn new skills for personal development which will enable them to obtain a meaningful job. It is also designed for people who have been out of school for several years who wish to refresh and update rusty business skills. Successful completion of the course will give students four secondary school credits. Depending on previous education, education, some will receive a secondary school diploma while others will earn a certificate. certificate. School staff involved in the program say it's gratifying to witness the smoothness with which the mature students have blended into the school curriculum. "They are a pleasure pleasure to teach," said Mrs. Naples, "and they are so eager to learn." The business skills update class at BHS consists of women (and one man) with sufficient maturity to have their priorities established in terms of the goals they want to achieve. An overall keenness to expand their potential both personally and in the business world is pronounced by a dedicated attitude toward the obviously overdue business update skills course at BHS. The mature students will proceed half days through a normal school year and Business Business director Mrs. Naples says she expects the current success of the course will likely spell its continuation.
