Ed Schamerhorn (left) with Rotary Club President Paul Morris following his Thanksgiving message to Bowmanville Rotarians last week. Thankfulness is an important important ingredient which to too often missing from our lives, members of the Bowmanville Rotary Club were told last week. The guest speaker at the club's regular meeting on Thursday, October 7, was Rev. Ed Schamerhorn, pastor of St. Paul's United Church. "Gratitude is what spoils life when you leave it our," he said. The guest speaker also described the dimension of faith as being important to the physical well-being of the body. Too much anger or hatred can physically undermine undermine one's health, he said. On the other hand, love and kindness kindness can promote good health. Rev. Schamerhorn suggested that thanksgiving is one of the traits important to a healthy state of mind. He noted that in these days of difficulties such as high taxes and high mortgage rates, we may wonder what there is to be thankful for. "Bad as things are, they could be a whole lot worse," Rev. Schamerhorn said. He reminded his listeners that we are not the first generation to be faced with difficulties. Even at the time of confederation, the number of bankruptcies in Canada was estimated at six per day, he said. So often, we become so tuned to difficulties and hardships hardships of the day that we lose our sense of thankfulness, Rev. Schamerhorn said. And that's why a special day is needed to give thanks. He reminded Rotarians that the Pilgrims were not the only ones to hold thanksgiving services in the new world! The explorer, Martin Frobisher also held a thanksgiving thanksgiving service in the year 1578 on Frobisher Bay in Canada's north. "The greatest example of thankfulness is when we give of ourselves with no thought of return," Rev. Schamerhorn said. Re: The United Way Advertisement Wednesday October 6, 1982. Dear John: On behalf of the West Durham District and the 7th Bowmanville Cubs, whose picture appeared in this advertisement, I would like to inform you that the scouting movement, in the Town of Newcastle is NO way involved with the United Way. We receive no support or financial aid from the United Way. We do not appreciate being used to help raise funds for the United Way, in the belief that these funds are being used to help support us. Scouting in West Durham District-is totally self sufficient, sufficient, through its own fund raising projects and parents support. We appreciate your help in correcting this error. Yours truly, Steve Godsmark AKELA-7th Bowmanville Cubs Editor's Note: Sorry about that. When the- advertisements advertisements were being prepared we were not aware that the West Durham District Scouting Council was not included in the United Way, while Oshawa and Whitby were. However, we now understand that some of the local group feel they should be one of the agencies so their administrative expense would be provided through United Way funds. No decision has yet been made, but it's a possibility. However, this year, they will raise their own funds. FINE QUALITY MONUMENTSand MARKERS Look lor this seal It's your guarantee of permanence.
