Jones and J. brooks Last Thursday night, the Bowmanville Town League started off its 1982-83 season with a pair of high scoring shootin' matches. In the opener, Town Sports pummelea Bowmanville Golf and Country Club by a score of 8-2. Bowmanville Golf kicked off the scoring with a goal by B. Godfrey, assisted by J. Hogarth. Town Sports picked A lot of people call life "The Survival of the Fittest". You know, a lot of people are **■ up an unassisted goal by J. Leddy to end the 1st period tied at one. In the second period, L. Brunt set up D. Hartwig, who screamed one home to give Town Sports a 2-1 lead going into the final frame. Then in the third, the fog lifted and the roof caved in on Bowmanville Golf and Country. Country. Town Sports bombarded the Country Club with six goals. B. Allen picked up a pair, with singles going to J. Leddy for his second, R. Wool- ner, T. Conahan and G. Murphy. Raking in the assists were J. Bennet with two, G. Murphy, T. Jenkins, L. Brunt, T. Langmaid and M. Adams. Bowmanville Golf's lone goal was netted by D. Wilson with S. Brown and Lumpy Oliver assisting. In the second game Castle Hotel hammered Hunt's Photography, skating to a 10-6 decision. D. Tamblyn set the pace for the Hotel Club with four goals and two assists. Also contributing contributing for the Castle were P. Sero with a pair and singles going to J. Colwell, D. Ross, S. Allin and J. Baker. Picking up the assists were B, White and S. D., Bishop of Peterborough diocese, blessed their new church and rectory. This basement church which accommodates approximately approximately 200 people will serve' the area until a larger church is built as the parish grows. Much of the work on the church and rectory was done by volunteer workers, both men and women, thus reducing reducing costs. . Above the church is a room to serve for religious education classes, for meetings and for a chapel. Bishop Doyle presented medals from Pope John Paul II to three of the parishioners: The Pro Ecclesia medal to Mr. Gerald Gerrits who supervised the volunteer work; the Beni Meriti medal to Mr. Gerald Power, President of the parish council; the Beni Meriti medal to' Mr. Michael Heenan who was in charge of volunteer help. The Bishop and Congregation applauded Monsignor Cleary for his devotion to the establishment and development of St. Therese Parish,, Courtice. The Durham Region Horseback Riding for the handicapped Association held their fourth Annual Ride-a-thon at Hoskin . Stables at Blackstock on Sept. 25th. Forty-six riders participated in this event and $4,900 was raised. The Association would like to thank all that assisted in various ways. Blackstock 2 and 3- 4-H groups held another meeting at the Recreation Centre. This week we learned about no knead breads. Along with sampling some bréad, we were also allowed to make some. The leaders continued on with the meeting and then it was adjourned. Mrs. Ella Venning spent Thanksgiving weekend with her daughter Joyce and Dale Gunter at Newmarket. The family was home from their colleges for the weekend to make for great visiting. There were (eleven tables at the Sénior Citizen's card party with the following winners: 1. M. Pools- 86; 2. Guests for Thanklgiving Sunday dinner at the Cawker farm were Mrs. Sylvia Cawker, Chandre, Jason and puppy Titan, Scarborough. Monday guests were Alan and Eleanor Cawker of Oshawa. Trip of Interest Grahame and Neta Fish of Nestleton, have recently returned from a two month trip visiting relatives in western Canada. Grahame assisted with the harvest on the farm of Mrs. James Boyes and son Connor in Carnduff, Sask. The crops were excellent - they feel the best they have ever had. They were pretty well harvested when they return ed home. Late crops were damaged by frost. A real "highlight" for Grahame - and Neta Fish while there was seeing an oil drilling rig in operation, and its subsequent moving to a different site - a distance of eight miles. The total operation of asembling and moving set 1 up wds accomplished accomplished in less than one day. This company rig has seventeen seventeen more locations to drill. Neta had the thrill of receiving a seven and three quarter inch bit that had done its job - a souvenir to serve as a reminder of the trip. An interesting trip to be sure! Church News Attendance was excellent for the beautiful Sunday services, October 10th in the three churches - Caesarea Community - Nestleton Presbyterian and Nestleton United. Fruit, flowers, harvest and vegetables are the symbols of thankfulness within our hearts. They were there in abundance gracing the Churches in keeping with the season. Our able Ministers delivered strong sermons conveying the thanksgiving theme thoughts for all to take home. Music was a feature as well. Family Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Holland and Chad, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, and Mr. and Mrs. Jim . Leishman, Jamie, Michael and W.D. Rea boro, were Sunday evening Thanksgiving Thanksgiving dinner guests with Grahame and Neta Fish at Nestleton. On Monday, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Smith and Penny of Hampton were afternoon guests. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Malcolm, Nestleton, hosted their children and grandchildren grandchildren to Thanksgiving dinner over the weekend. All were present except daughter Laurie who is working in Banff, Alberta. Mr. Stanley Malcolm, Port Perry, was also an honoured guest. Congratulations Fred and Faith Lawrence of Caesarea, celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving Day. "Warmest Wishes" for many more from the area friends.
